As I create my own jazz/funk playlist I find myself using lots of music from Miles and his progeny. He schooled them well and inspired them even more.I especially like Herbie's work. He was rollin' during this period and made lots of great music. Thanks to all of you YouTubers for helping me rediscover my musical roots. I feel like I'm back in Philly among friends.
@AliYourBrother Yes I did say Miles! How can we get over such a significant contributor to our musical heritage. From Bop to Cool he was ahead of his time. A true innovator he was the father of jazz/funk/rock fusion. Miles Dewey Davis was an artistic genius, an enigma and let's just say it....a bad mother fucker. Always Miles ahead....
This is fucking magical, can't get that synth bass line out of my head.... Nice to see Mati Klarwein's name mentioned, he's a well known artist in Mallorca. Unfortunately he died 9 years ago.
This is the Linn LM-1 drum machine supplying the beat, and at 1980 this makes it one of the earliest recordings to use it (and the earliest that I personally know of).
At this point creator Roger Linn was going around to Hollywood parties showing off an unfinished prototype to anyone who would listen, and Herbie was one of the first to jump on board. Yet another example of where Mr. Hancock was on the cutting edge!
I can relate to everybody who it took years to find this song lol. I probably found out this was Herbie nearly 10 years ago, maybe a little less. It was on one of many mixed tapes my younger brother and I used to play constantly.
I thought this song was called Mr Hands, since I had only heard it on a mixed tape of my uncle's back in '81. I'm glad I searched for it. Such a smooth sound.
I wore this tape out when i came across it in 84' while in the USAF. Today's music has no creativity. Im so glad that we had artist and music like this when i was in my teens and 20's. Most kids today just dont have a clue what real music and talent really is.
It also took me FOREVER to find this tune. I actually found and bought the C.D at Motor City Records. They had to order it for me.
It was used on the Pizza Hut commercial featuring Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Unforgettable images and sounds. I have adopted it as my personal theme song!
Man, Herbie's chord changes are SO very... They touch your soul, then throw that synth on top with the after touch, AND the Vocoder makes a nasty cameo?!?! It's sensory overload, just lost in the sound...
@nafeNafen Definately, similar to what I had in mind. Reminds me of a sunset stage or a beautifully constructed stage in an old game, a side-scrolling platformer.
is not that hard to find a song when you know the artist name. well maybe it was back in the days, but now you can look up anything easily. 20 or 10 years is too much, hahaha.
@juanbarros88 when I said it took me twenty years to find this song, i didnt mean the last twenty years. I heard this song the first it came on the radio from philadelphia in 1980, I didnt catch the title of the song the artist name. I found it again in 2000 and bought the cd
@JazzyFaReal My dad had this on tape. We knew It was Herbie but did not know what the title or album was. And my dad says they used this song in a "Pizza Hut" commercial.
A nostalgic song for me. Having been born in '84 Ive never listened to it properly buts its as if ive always know it well... like greeting someone for the first time that youve always seen at a distance, now they are youre best friend.
Sa Ra used it nicely in "Hey Love". What's even better is that they featured Mr. Hancock on another dope cut called "Fantastic Vampere" with Erykah. Say word.
OMG OMG!!! All I ever heard of this was the baseline at the beginning as it was in a Pizza Hut commercial with Herbie. What's that? 39years ago? It's haunted me ever since and I've composed tons of little pieces based off the baseline alone!
Much love to Jazzy and 2channeltv for filling in some of my missing pieces. I've got a LOT of catching up to do. I hope I can find this album.
@JazzyFaReal I found the title and artist the very first time I heard this song in 1980. I just happened to be in a record store in Sacramento, Ca, at age 17. Yaay! None of that 20 year stuff for me, bro! I'm FAST, man! REAL fast.
Herbie Hancock plays all of the instruments on this song....WHAT TALENT

Magical is the word. Herbie's piano solo is captivating - very Milesian use of space, it makes you reflect.

I dig the synth bass on this track. This entire piece does an excellent job of relaxing me. Seems to fit winding down with a beer or two.
