  • One of the simplest and probably the most beautiful love proposal ever. I love the book and the film. I rented from the library and I have watched a couple of times and I am certain that I will watch it again a few more times. It is wonderful to find a good movie in a time when there is a garbage mass production in the film industry.

  • DEFINITELY my favorite version; Knightley melts me with his concern for her over that abominable scoundrel ... he loves her so much. <3

  • EVERYBODY If you like "Emma", and especially if you love Mr Knighley, you ar HIGHLY recommended to purchase the book(s) "George knightley esquire" 1 and 2. It's Emma from Mr Knightley's point of view, and it is really skillfully written for a fanfiction... I live in Sweden, and I just ordered the two books... I really don't regret it at ALL ; 3

It reallt shows his awesome relashionship wiith John, his noble actions for Hartfield, and his realisation of his feelings.... along with his pain ^^b

  • wow! The best kiss of movies ever till now for me! "my friend..." beautiful!

  • AWW!! If I were Mr. Knightly and she said, "He HAS taken advantage of me; but not injured me." That would piss me off more; and would want to punch Mr. Churchill. He hurt the woman he loves.

  • This part in the book; I keep reading it over and over; cause; if you listen to Knightly u can figure WHY he was jealous. PLUS in the 96 versions; the looks/ words he gave were kind of telling. @liyelongnprosper92; I agree; I've ALWAYS loved that line; its SOO simple but SOOO romantic!! If I think of the begining of this one; when he complained about her NOT marrying it actually makes sense; he wanted to her to marry HIM!!!!!!

  • Mine are Captain Wentworth; Mr. Knightly(actually he went up; after remembering this part); and Mr. Darcy. Im sorry Federick writing that letter to Anne; did it for me!!!

  • @SelenaMulan

I'm in the middle of reading persuasion now. I've already seen 2 versions and while I liked it, didn't really elevate Frederick in my eyes. But I must say the book is a different story. I haven't gotten to the letter part right.

  • I think Gwyneth has a great look for the part. I just don't think her acting was nearly as good. It may not have been her fault though. For some reason I like seeing Emma full of life and full of herself. But I will admit, the "badly done" scene in the Paltrow version is till one of the best ever.

  • While reading I could not help but picture Mr. Knightley as Billy Connolly (perhaps a little younger) and Mr. John Knightley as Gunnar Björnstrand (who knows why...). I haven't watched any filmed versions but I must say that on the face of it Gwyneth Paltrow seems perfect. She looks composed and rigid, and so more obviously discomposed by the smarting embarrassments she suffers. Romola Garai you expect to blunder, don't you?

  • @theburt83 I think Romola fits Emma perfectly. From what I've come to understand, Emma is, on a whole, something of a female version of Mr. Darcy: prideful, vain, conceited, and selfish to a point. Romola's facial expressions make these characteristics all the more believable, yet, still somewhat arrogant!

I watched Gwyneth Paltrow and she's also very good as Emma but I think she lacks some of the...narcissism? arrogance? as Emma.

  • Yes, Edmund from MP. Roger Hamley is in Wives and Daughters. Please watch it if you haven't seen it already. It's here on youtube.

  • I like D'arcy, Knightley, Edmund, Thornton, Roger Hamley, Mr. Rochester, lol.

I think the only period guy I DON"T like is Heathcliffe.

  • @SuperSoulSeeker Who is Edmund(Mansfield Park???) and who is Roger Hamley??

  • This is one of my favourite scenes too! She's so funny!

  • That kiss looked so awkward.

  • Romola Garai IS Emma. She's the most accurate depiction I've ever seen of her--and she still makes her likeable! Gwenyth's version glossed over all her bad traits and Kate Beckinsale's version made Emma a total, unlikeable bitch. But Romola is my favorite! Nothing seems forced in her acting, she is so natural. People complain she overacts but I don't see that. She's just very expressive, as Emma is.

  • "He has taken advantage of me-but he has not injured me"

    You go girl!

  • My favorite Emma and Knightley. Paltrow is just dull. Northam is nice though.

  • she overacts. the Gwyneth Paltrow version is better...

  • I've been saying this for years....Jane Austen knows how to write her men!!

  • I'm not to sure I like this version, I prefer the 1996 one. But of all, I love the book most.

  • Romola's Emma seems a bit forced here. Why is she clipping the hedge in the beginning rather than lavender? They can obviously afford gardeners. Also, when she says, "You're angry with me?" and later when she brushes her forehead. Perhaps I'm only noticing these details, though, because I do acting myself...

  • @an3188 I thought the 'You're angry with me', 'Thought you were going to scold me like you used to' were heartwrenching, because Emma is so desperate to maintain any kind of relationship with him (or to remind him that they were once close enough for him to scold her), and she thinks she's lost him forever.

  • Best version

  • I think this is the St version :-)

  • 2.58 : cute when he says emma, he already says it like he loves her! cuute!

  • Two lovely actors. I love the tenderness in Mrs. Knightley kind gestures and the hiden boldness in Emma.s smile. What a delight to watch these two beautiful people.

  • I wish I could combine different Emma movies together. This Mr. Knightly, Kate Beckinsale as Emma, then the general clothes and atmosphere from the movie version. Sigh, oh well. Guess I'll just have to watch all three interchangeably for now.

  • Man hiding behind bush = stalker

Woman hiding behind bush = adorable

  • @rentamidget1234 that was funny :)

  • I think these are the best cast people in any of the Austen movie adaptions!

  • 13 people have no sense of what is romantic

  • This one's good, but I believe the Gweneth Paltrow and Jeremy Northrup version was more engaging, and the music was better, However, the dialogue of this scene is more realistic, therefore, it "engages" one at a different level. Interesting, how versions of the same book can be so varied. All good, but in different ways.

  • Awwwh.. I'm sooo in love Mr. Knightley!!!!!

  • I like the version with Kate Beckinsale and Mark Strong the best :) But this is also a lovely version I admit :))))

  • Dear Johnny Lee Miller,

We have now seen you play two of Austen's heroes. Are you going too portray anymore?

    With love, affection, and hope,

    Your fan

  • Lovely version.

  • It's so beautiful that he's so sensitive so her touch. You would never have thought that he could be so emotional, but despite his strong appearance he has the softest inside that of a birds.

  • Emma 1993 movie much more better

  • My heart melts EVERY SINGLE TIME.

  • this is the BEST adaptation :D love it :D

  • Jonnyyyyyyy <3 <3 <3!!!!

  • Pride and prejudice is so very superior to Emma, both as book and as tv-series.

  • "If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more."

    Awww!!!

  • Until yesterday, I was in only in love with Mr. Darcy. Now Mr. Knightley has stolen my heart as well. Hm... time to arrange a nice little "Austen-Men-Harem"... anyone wants to join? :)

  • @primuka

I agree with you but Mr. Lefroy (Becoming Jane) is adorable as well!! I love them!!

  • @SugarAngel95 Yes, yes, yes! How could I forget him... :)

  • @SugarAngel95 especially when he is played by james mcavoy ;)

  • @123doobedoo

oh yes... I love his special look and smile when they dance :D

  • @SugarAngel95 Me too! do you know where i can watch the episodes of emma?:)

  • @123doobedoo Unfortunately not. I'm sorry. ;)

  • @SugarAngel95 Okay. Excuse me while I go and bawl my eyes out! ;P

  • @primuka "Austen-Men-Harem"!?!? Haha! I like your phraseology. Mr. Knightley seems more agreeable and sociable than Mr. Darcy, who comes across as quite reserved and standoffish. I feel that the relationship between Knightley and Emma is more favorable for marriage.

  • @primuka Include Mr. Thornton, and I'm in! :)

  • @ChocolateIsMyDrug ahhh...Mr. Thornton indeed! I'm in :)

  • @primuka You need to check out Capt. Wentworth of "Persuasion." He tops them all!

  • @juicyXD no way Thornton is the best!!!

  • @primuka I like Knightley, but I LOVE Darcy!!!

  • @KarliMarieRoberts Oh yes. I know this feeling. :)

  • @primuka Who doesn't?

  • @primuka what about Mr. Wentworth or Mr. Thornton? I prefer them over all=)

  • @primuka I totally agree

  • @primuka lol I'm still a sucker for Mr. Darcy :)

  • @primuka He's charming but it won't be easy for someone to take Mr. Darcy's place in my heart!

  • @anayellow1 Same here... :)

  • eleven people dislike this scene??? REALLY PEOPLE?

  • I haven't seen this entire version... can anyone tell me why she's so upset?

  • @loulie1997 I take it you probably haven't read the book either, but the reason why she's so upset is because she believes Mr. Knightley is coming to tell her of his love for Harriet Smith, and she cannot bear it.

  • @Spiceofmadrid No I'm in the middle of Mansfield Park! I love it! Thanks a lot! I remember now!

  • I wish I could find a Mr. Knightley!! There must be one out there for me, because my real name is truly Emma.

  • @loulie1997 NICE!! :) Emma is the best name in the world!! lol

  • @hopelessromantic1311 I wish I could too, but there's a problem here - I have no non-related male childhood best friend who could possibly be my Mr. Knightley. Oh well... maybe I'll have to be the female 'Mr. Knightley' to some promising but clueless male 'Emma'? :)

  • Thank you so much for putting all the versions together! Very handy. ;)

  • hi i love this version so much!!! thank you for posting it! may i ask though how you get your clips?

  • The version with Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeremy Northam has always been a great favourite of mine, but I think I like this one even better. I find the love story so easy to believe. Jonny Lee Miller and Romola Garai has a wonderful and very convincing energy between them.

And btw - even though I am as much in love with Mr. Darcy as any woman who has made his aquintance, I do think I would choose Mr. Knightley over him. :o)

  • How funny: Sick Boy is now Mr. Knightley.

  • I have yet to see an Emma adaption that I do not love. I really can not pick between the three I have seen. and don't try to get me to choose a favorite Knightley (though I might just favor Jeremy Northam a little bit more ;) )

  • Jonny's so charming in this scene. I think I actually fell in love with him when I first saw this!

  • Watch the 1972 version - it deserved to be decked in BAFTA's!

  • I'm sorry but this adaptation is by far the worst and cheesiest. The actress cannot act (she 'acts' like a teenager with a crush), the Mr. Knightley hasn't got THE FACTOR, and the dialogue has been highly modernised to an extent that whatever charm was left from the book has gone.

  • @Aquaseventytree This version truly is more modern-like than any other version, but I still prefer this. This is an adapt that really "lives". If you have got acquainted with Jane Austen herself, you can notice that she really did overstate his dialogues: no one can speak so decorative when having so great feelings, try it yourself - but in books. This version shows the feelings like they supposedly were. And Emma was young and very lively, not so considerable as she was described elsewhere.

  • @Aquaseventytree teenager i guess? i used to love emma with gwyneth and jeremy...but i love this one for the acting...and JLM has got more than just than the FACTOR

  • I haven't seen the whole movie but I prefer this scene in the Gwyneth Paltrow version. Mr Knightley is so much better in that one.

  • @lmbgemini me too. The Paltrow version makes me feel like she's being snooty and condesending towards people like Harriet Smith for the sake of it, but in this one you get much more of the sense that Emma is interfering b/c she really does want to help... in her own convulted sort of way.

  • @lmbgemini

I agree about him. I've tried to consider LeeMiller, but it just doesn't work for me.

  • I used to think this Emma was annoying.. Now I think she's funny.

  • If only we girls all had a Mr. Knightly. If he were mine, I would melt away everytime I see him!

  • I don't know why but every time Jonny Lee Miller says "You will not ask me my secret?" I melt like a puddle.

  • Awww how can I see this over and over again and everytime I do, smile like an idiot??

I love this version. So tender, beautiful, sweet...Romola and Jonny did a great job. and...I just love JLM oinsss what a man..so, so...I can describe him. I just love him 3

  • I love how every Knightley I've seen says that line the same way. hist aunt is in the way, his aunt dies. I love it. Brilliant.

  • If I loved you less, I'd be able to talk about it more - the most romantic line in literary history.

  • love it!this makes me cry!!

  • I LOVE this version of Emma. The Gwyneth Paltrow version really did not "Capture" the story. Plus this one managed to get a good looking guy to play George Knightly. And no offence to anyone, but Romola is a better "Masterpiece Theater" actor the Paltrow.

  • They always manage to make this scene soooo awkward. It's best in the Gwyneth Paltrow version, though

  • 'If I live you less i might be able to talk about it more''

    I love that line.

That is a quote from P&P, Darcy said it too

  • she looks clumsy =S Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeremy are much better....

  • I never get why they change the speech. It just bugs me as I know it word for word and in this some of the speech seems out of placeand perhaps a little too modern. I'm not sure what I think of Romola as Emma- the acting is too dramatic and she isn't really how I imagine Emma, but it is an interesting interpretation of the character. I prefer Mark Strong as Mr Knightley, but this one is pretty good. It's great though. Emma is the best story ever :3

  • How that man can squint and still be ridiculously attractive is beyond me.

  • why don't they ever stay true to the book? it is OK to do that :P kissing...yea right. in those times. i get that they wanna dramatise things to make it more interesting but the pride and prejudice bbc version with colin firth proves that you CAN be completely true to the book and be just as popular

  • @joystixxify "Completely true to the book" does not involve Mr. Darcy emerging from a pond, dripping wet and presumably oozing the Mr. Darcy animal magnetism, I would like to point out. That, too, is to appeal to the modern sensibility. It's not so terrible, I would suggest.

  • @zaumbe you're right about the mr. darcy scene but that one thing didn't go against every etiquette of jane austen's era. i don't mind change if it still makes sense. seeing two non-married people kiss in a jane austen story just feels wrong

  • Friendship is for her more important than her love. Very nice - very Jane Austen.

  • When shes hiding behind the bushh haahha

  • He has aged so awesomely...and so dearly. He makes my heart stutter and my blood slow to a crawl...sigh

  • @CrazyGood88 I know what you mean. Cyber-punk, druggie, romantic fool, serial killer, gentleman. Man can do it all!

  • @puddlemini YES!! exactly. love him.

  • Although Paltrow In Shakespeare in Love was truly immortal so is Romola Garia in the is version of Emma. I don't really like either Mr. Knightly although J Miller is true to the character... J Northan and Paltrow did not have it on screen together... that version is about comedy... this version is about a real young women with little real experience in the world and there is something about Romola and her growing sophistication and yet sweet innocence that is wonderful.

  • He plays Mr Knightly so sweetly :) he makes me want to "aww" all the time :D

  • Jeremy Northam executed the same lines better than Johnny Lee Miller did. Even though I like this adaptation, Jeremy Northam's acting skills makes me like the other one better!

  • Jeremy Northam executed the lines better than Mark Strong did. Though I like this adaption, Jeremy Northam's acting makes me like the other adaption better!

  • this is not one of my favorite adaptations..although it is comical and fun, it seems rather forced and too modern for the time period Jane Austen's Emma was put in.

my favorite is the BBC one (it follows the book exactly! down to facial expressions) and the 1996 film!

  • the best emma in my opinion second place for the 1997 emma with Kate Beckinshale

  • @robertaburattini

    I agree.

  • @robertaburattini Oh I so agree with you.. Romola Garia 1st, Kate Beckinsale 2nd and Gwyneth Paltrow 3rd... But I love to watch them all, because I love the book so much... *sighs* Oh and JLM is GORGEOUS too... hee hee.

    Regards from Wales UK :0)x

  • romola garai is a great emma!! but i think johnny lee miller is too short for her. and a little bit too awkward.

  • She is very lovely Emma. Adorable creature.

  • Jonny Lee Miller is my most favorite Mr. Knightley ever. He has captured it perfectly. He is gentle and noble and at the same time you can see the flciker of emotions on his face. With little gestures he can convey what he is feeling, he can convey his turmoil of emotions inside and he looks really handsome. This adaptation as a Tv version was just awesome. I don't want to compare it to the movie because both are so different mediums. The movie is great but tv version is just as great.

  • @pearlmode Yes, Jonny Lee Miller was an amazing Mr. Knightley!!

  • ahah it's so funny when she tries so hide and then he sees her :DD

  • I do enjoy previous performances by Romola Garai and Johnny Lee Miller both him in Mansfield Park and her in I Capture the Castle. Both are quite good.

  • Personally, I like Jeremy Northam as Mr. Knightly better, but I do like Romola Garai as Emma SO much more than Gwyneth Paltrow. But over all this is a good version!

  • I love the awkwardness of the beginning. It's so real. This is my favorite adaptation of a Jane Austen novel. All of the actors are just superb.

  • I need to agree with @OneHindo, i really prefer the movie from 1996, because i just love the chemistry between mr. knightley and emma and jeremy northam is my favorite knightley! He is so sweet and gentle and just.... well yeah, perfect :D

However, i am impressed by romola garai playing emma in this version! She is so energetic, lively and self-confident and with all her gossiping and stuff she becomes really modern. I can really imagine her in the real world ;)

  • i like mark strong's version of mr. knightley better. but garai is really good in this part.

  • did people use at that time the line " put the record straight"?. Just wondering as it sounds weird.. Loveee all of jane austens adaptations!! and the books!! great actors in this one!

  • @angiemaciela

I read the same question elsewhere quite a while ago. If I remember it well, it is indeed an old idiom, and the modern term "record" goes back to an older term "record" that had a different meaning. The word isn't new, only the meaning it was given.

  • @TheGlaros Ahhh didnt know! thank u for the data! x

  • @TheGlaros .. Yep agree with you.. Record - as in record of the event.

Brilliant version of EMMA though isn't it... Good Old Beeb (BBC TV) Love it :0)X

  • Hi, Can anyone pls tell what are the other bbc classic productions like EMMA, i wanna watch them all...anyone???

  • @freshglance

I recommend "Jane Eyre" (2006) and "North & South" (2004) - both were adapted by Sandy Welch, the screenwriter of "Emma" (2009).

  • @TheGlaros I will check it out..

  • @freshglance

I would also recommend the 2008 version of Persuasion (Jane Austen), and the 2007 version of Sense and Sensibility (Jane Austen). North and South (Elizabeth Gaskell) is my favourite period drama, with Persuasion (Jane Austen) being next, then the 1995 version of Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen). Hope that helps your viewing enjoyment! :-)

  • i saw the other versions with this scene.. and liked this the best.. hell i didnt even like the others..

  • OMFG. I love this very much. Very much. I can't believe that Mr. Knightley is supposed to be 38 years old and Emma's what? 21. :) Very touching. Their love is very touching. I love the kiss. It's wonderful.

  • OMFG. I love this very much. Very much. I can't believe that Mr. Knightley is supposed to be 38 years old and Emma's what? 21. :) Very touching. Their love is very touching.

  • I wish I lived when this was set. Everything was so much more romantic and proper. I'm not gonna lie, I love Mr Knightley in this xx

  • this seems to be nice. my fav will remain the gwyneth paltrow and jeremy northam version! this knightley is edmund from mansfield park!

  • my favourite Emma :)

    I like this adaptation

  • Hye I like the kiss in this version better though! The earlier one was all awkward. Also this one is bit more on the teary-side but still nice. I like the other one too...it was emotional despite the fact tht emma started smiling at the end while in this version, she is in tears throughout

  • @OneHindo I find the adaptation pretty annoying!I know that everyone says it is all good etc but the movie with Gwyneth Paltrow was a lot better in my opinion because it was more romantic and showed more chemistry! The lady who plays Emma in here is too overdramatic!

  • @ics002 the movie was great.. what I mean is the character (this is my favorite Emma as a character).. I like this adaptation but the movie was better I agree

but Emma (the character) is adorable in this one ^_^

  • this emma is very awkward, her speech is so choppy. and miller as knightly doesnt look man enough and lacks the charm jeremy northem possesses.

  • @Whitesparkles have seen the whole series? emma with gwyneth was my favorite....this one is just as good or even better...but i still like both versions

  • @Whitesparkles

I like Northam, but IMO his character is too playful, not serious enough for Mr. Knightley.

  • complicated but really simple underneath. love it!!

  • I wish people today would still be talking like that

  • Along with Colin Firth playing Mr. Darcy, Jonny Lee Miller has to be one of my favorite Jane Austen leading men. I have been a fan of his for years and I think he was adorable in this version. SO MUCH better than the Gwenyth Paltrow version!! His expression at 5:34 is heart wrenching!!!

  • awwwwwww!! cutest scene ever!!! :') im tearing up x

  • I like this version very much, but I must say, I prefer the way the script followed in the version with Jeremy Northam and Gwenyth Paltrow

  • I love how Emma's expression changes at 4:32

    This is soooo romantic!

  • @alexandrabak i love 5:50 when he like isnt sure

  • AHHH!! ITS EDMUND! FROM MASEFIELD PARK!

  • He must really like the jane austen movies....

  • I actually liked Mark Strong's Mr. Knightley, because it seemed so much closer to what Jane Austen intended: a man who's spent Emma's whole life trying to be the firm guiding hand she doesn't have, helping her control her strong will and spoiled status to become the wonderful woman he knows is in there. Then he has to somehow find a way to stop being her big brother/parent figure to transform into the lover he wants so much to be, and he struggles with that until pity and love carry him away.

  • I really liked Johnny Lee Miller as Edmund (his quiet reserved way kind of fit thoughtful Edmund, the curate) but I thought he was very weird as Mr. Knightley. I don't know if the role was written in such a way, but sometimes I thought this Mr. Knightley had an obsessive compulsive disorder; he was very particular about where and how he would walk, stand & sit, talk, etc. My best Mr. Knightley is Jeremy Northam - not too angry as Mark Strong and not to weird as this one. 2nd comes Mark Strong.

  • Johnny looks funny in these clothes ;) i can't help noticing that he is not so good for this role. he was perfect Edmund, but, come on, he will never be mr Knightly!

    sorry, Johnny.

Jeremy Northam one and only mr Knightly!

  • I wish I had my own Mr. Knightley!!! <3 <3

  • has anyone noticed Mr knightly is also in one of the other jane austen movies i think its becomeing jane

  • @RaeBabeehLovesYouuuh Jonny LeeMiller is also in Mansfield Park 1999 as Edmund Bertram. Have you seen the clip on my channel?

  • @SMaryG

i havent but i will see now :)

  • @SMaryG Ironically, Blake Ritson (who plays Mr. Elton in the movie) also played Edmund Bertram in the 2007 TV version of Mansfield Park. :)

  • @SMaryG He obviously likes Austen then! :)

  • @RaeBabeehLovesYouuuh

Nah, its the older version of mansfield park. circa 1999 or so
