I've been searching for this song for a year now. My grandmother heard it in the movie "Story of Three Loves," back when it first came out in 1953, and has been on a hunt to find it in record and CD stores ever since.
Glad I could find it, I've never seen her so excited. c:
This is one of Rachmaninoff's most difficult pieces. I think it's also his greatest. I first heard this in the movie "Somewhere in time" Along with other beautiful music that was in the same movie.
@yahoouser105 You just have to keep digging till you find one that meets with your particular taste and standards. Other than that, stick with your familiar Reader's Digest records.
My Mother was a concert pianist. I recall her playing this lovely piece for us as bedtime music. It does not get too much better than that. A wonderful memory. Indeed, we should have had it played at her funeral. Nice touch.
This song is like wanting to get out of your boring little home town all your life, and then realizing how breathtakingly beautiful it was all those years, on the day you finally leave.
Rachmaninoff was said to have the piece modeled on Paganini who was a violinist of his day that was said to have made a deal with the devil, in that he played so well.
Thank God there are still people who cry when they hear beautiful music. If mankind ever reaches a point where no man is moved to tears by beautiful music God will have destroyed this world of ours.
@cristi91 I remember this when I visied Universal Film Studious just being played before they close and havent heard it for over 20 years I was watching a Film on TV called Love is a four letter word and this was the soundtrack played all the way through.
@Mr1329932 I apologize for my mistake, Can you please enlighten me, what is the correct way of referring to this beautiful piece of music? - Either way we all know what I meant...
@Wroclawysck Yes, and one of my favorite movies. I am usually not a movie fan. When someone does come up with a film like "Somewhere In Time" I do admit that from time to time someone does a remarkable job of entertaining me.
BRILLIANT MUSIC!!! It's amazing that music has a language & life all it's own. It touches our emotions & it leads us to where ever it goes. Much like the waves on the waters. What beauty it holds for all of us.
Nothing in particular in my head, (and I mean that) ahhah When I hear what I call pure and beautiful music I cry. To me music is a very emmotional experience.
@angelshine10 / I think your find this was the theme music to a Charlie Chaplin film called Limelight some years ago. It was and still remains my favourite piece of classical music ever. Thanks for posting it piano77man77
@EitanRaimov Thank you very much for clarifying. I have always wondered who the pianist was, ever since I heard this performance. To this day, I still download performances of XVIII op. 43 and this performance still outshines them all in my opinion. I looked up the album the performance was from, and shows it was released in 1994 (the album itself, a four-disc compilation).
@piano77man77 ur more than wellcome! glad if i helped. totaly agree on this being one of the greatest performances. i have this version on one of the "collection" discs (bought it after i found out exactly whos performance it is)
I got goose bumps everytime I hear this piece......moves one to the very depths . I request this be played at any service when I'm gone along w/ Clair de Lune.
I first herard this when I was about 4 rs. old in C. Amer. It resonated in y SOul. I've heard bits and pieces since then, but never knew the title, until I thought of going to the "100 Most Popular Classics" on Youtube.
As dianestrain so stated. This , to me, almost goes beyond the heading of just music. It presents itself with a certain eloquence and evokes so many feelings and emotions that it does stand alone. I can't imagine someone listening to this and not becoming emotionally involved in it's simple purity. I have four pieces of music I've requested to be played when I'm gone. This is one of them.
This is ME. I've probably played this just about everyday for over 15 years. I live in Boston; however, while in Utah I heard this beautiful Music at the Symphony. And the movie "Somewhere in Time" simply blew me away when I saw it long after I had been listening. I had no idea this was so much a part of the Soundtrack.....I'm too much of a romantic! :-) Diane in Boston
@dianestrain I've seen this played several times live and it is by far the most emotional music I've ever heard. It feels so natural and accepting in it's tone. How anyone can sit at a symphony listening to this and not be truly moved emotionally is beyond me. There are four pieces of music I've requested to be played at my funeral and this is one of them. (Of course, not the whole of this piece) lol This music, simply put, is magical.
@noodawXparis713 Thanks a lot! Honestly, I have no clue as to which orchestra it was that performed it. It didn't provide the details of each piece; in fact, it was actually from a "cinema classics" album that I'm having trouble finding. The orchestra does sound like it could have been the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra or the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
You made this grown man cry. I first saw this movie (alone) when I was twelve. I fell in love with Jane Seymour right then and there. Maybe therein lies my fascination with old phonographs? Beautiful job!
yes, there are a few that are from the Hawaiian islands, some might have been from the French Polynesian islands......some are from the coasts of Scotland....
There is another version, might have just been posted. Trouble is, the orchestra overpowers the pianist. That could be because of poor microphone placement.
Andy Williams sung "Love made me a Fool" based on this theme ....IF ANYONE HAS IT CAN YOU PLEASE UPLOAD AND LET ME KNOW???I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR IT FOR AGES.....
