Beautiful piece! I can only hope to have something half as nice. I'm cobbling together a steam engine from an old steel cash box(woodstove), pressure cooker(boiler), weed eater(engine), then more industrial parts like brass tubing, venturi, pressure guages, relief, etc...I was thinking of filling a bike tire with cement to create a cheap/easy flywheel - feeding a generator, bridge rectifier, charge controller(usually used for wind power), battery, inverter, then laptop. Steam Powered Laptop!
Very observant. What can I say - it is the first crank I've made. Works just fine like it is, but I will correct it someday. I knew the correct arrangement, but didn't catch that I assembled backwards till it was pointed out to me!
funny how now that i've noticed that, the movement looks so different compared to the "normal" setup, yet it works (but probably reduces efficiency, which obviously isnt the intent)
Hey do you know where there are any cross-section drawings of a valve design like yours? Or could you supply one?
I'm going to make a steam engine like this in my engineering class, but all the designs i've been making seem to be too over-complicated and in too many pieces.
Do you use a sliding rod or box shape in your valve?
The valve I use is a spool type. The brass spool has lands or grooves cut in it that cover or connect several passages drilled in the valve block. Only one moving part. Search for steam spool valve on the net. Figuring where and how to drill the passages in the valve block is the hard part. The spool has to be a very close honed fit since there are no seals internal or external. Check out the vidieo of building this above.
What do you think the hp rating would be? Could you email me the blueprints or something? It would also be cool if you built a small wooden boat to put it in and cruise on the lake with. Nice!!!!!!!!
I just want youi to know that today is my first viewing of your work. While your work seems to be very very Good your shop seems to be very clean. If my wife see's this I'll never hear the end of it. Please in the future film in a messy part of your shop. If you don't have a messy part, invite me over as I'm a pro at mess,,,,,,,lol
Whatever, even if it was for fun, it gives a nice finishing touch all these golden pieces on steel. Thumbs up! It makes me think of Kingdom Hearts (I dunno why)
Thats a beauty!!Make quite a few quid if you sold it too!Are you going to paint it and add drain cocks to the cylinder?I think engines like that should have a crosshead and guide, makes them run and look better, anyway thats just me!Well done.Stew
Thanks Stew for the comment. I kind of like the raw metal look. I know what you mean about the crosshead, but I'm learning a little with each engine I make. Got some ideas for the next 1 or 2 that are coming next.
That's some fantastic work! Way better than my designs!

is the piston valve easier to build than the D slide valve?
JimHolmgren1 7 months ago
@JimHolmgren1 Spool valve, much simpler and only two components, but you need a very close fit on the spool to the body..
apowellz 7 months ago
the piston in the middle powers the wheel, but what purpose does the ones in the back serve?
ilovetosm420ke 9 months ago
@ilovetosm420ke It is the valve.

@apowellz is that a nessecary componet for it to work

Sir - nothwithstanding, it is beautiful work that delights my eyes to see. You are rightly proud of your achievement.
Good luck with future projects!

Beautiful work!! Now all you have to do is to rotate the crankshaft/counterweights so that they are opposite the present position...

@tacfoley Thanks - yes I need to do that. Stupid error on my part. Maybe someday..

Can you please give me the Plans for that engine I really need them.

Is it running on compressed air?
rangerdanger222 1 year ago
@rangerdanger222 Yes - much easier and safer than using a boiler.

SpeedyGonZohan 2 years ago
That is correct.

nice job, seems like it still wants alot more running in!
silver760 2 years ago
A very neat job, but aren't the counterweights on the wrong side if your crank webs?
They are supposed to counterbalance the combined piston and con rod weight, not add to it.
Other than that I really like it

Did you build it from scratch or blue prints..??
If you have blue prints, I would gladly pay for shipping for a set. May even scale it up some, but hate to take time to build it from scratch.
Good work....!!! Your shop area is just to clean...!!

This is build from scratch. No blue prints, just some simple dimensional drawings. Kind of made it up as I went along.
Thanks, of course, I'm only showing the clean part!

what is the operation pressure featured and how much torgue is generated if i may ask?

Don't really know, but at 50 PSI I would guess about 90 in/lbs at the crank shaft.
