If you don't get it, don't worry. Put it in a historical perspective. Listen to jazz chronologically. If you still don't get it, well, there's a lot of theory, and theory doesn't always sound good just cause it's supposed too. There's theory to sounding "bad". Think of it like agreement and disagreement. Sometimes, he's playing all the accidentals without resolution to maximize tension (he's giving the audience the bird). There's something to be said for an eloquent man choosing to scream.
@annefrankisaho To us, this is music. You clearly do not understand it, by your lack of understanding of music theory and the merits of jazz. Either way, there's no need to express derogatory feelings for things you don't understand. Have an open mind, perhaps if you listened to more jazz or attempted to grasp an understanding, you would appreciate what a genius Dolphy is. Otherwise, there's no need to be insulting. What do you gain from it?
@annefrankisaho is this a joke?? obviously your brain has not been exposed to the musical changes that are common in jazz music. if you think nickelback is good music than your ears are those of a child.
Really interesting solo. :O Is he supposed to puff his cheeks to make that sort of sound? Just out of curiosity, since my teacher always told me to not do it..o.0
If the caption is correct , this is from the year he died. Just think what this guy could have done...he would be a towering giant of American music, one of the greatest musicians of our time.
@7sshare - Yeah, he's not a household name like Miles or Coltrane, but to any jazz fan in the know, he's right up there. Dolphy and Rahsaan Roland Kirk are my multi-instrumentalists of choice! Just super freakin' heavy!
I am taking up Bass clarinet at my school and my band director told me to look up Eric Dolphy.... wow I didnt even think that a bass clarinet could play like that is amazing wow Dr.Cannon was right
I love Dolphy's playing & yey how his playing, Bass Clari - Flute is so different... love the flute playing on Gazzelloni, Out to Lunch Album.. I play Flutes/alto & Bass & Bass Clari & could never tire of listening to Dolphy great video too....

That's "Take The 'A' Train", the very first modern jazz tune, composed by Billy Strayhorn for the Duke Ellington Orchestra in 1939. It became the Duke's most favorite theme song. Wonderful!
Y-HEAH!! Dolphy groves so hard on that jaunt, man, I swear, I'm saving up for one of those, LOL. I mean, who would've thought the bass CLARINET could sound so cool?? He was such an original, and so ahead of his time, too.
Such an inspired performance should not be started somwhere in the middle and cut off so violently. That is so respectless!
That's the problem of thinking in terms of "essentials", the listener doesn't even get to choose what he listens to more closely... I'd really like to hear that tenor solo.
Thanks for this post. I never knew of Eric Dolphy, and now that he has been gone for 32 years, I am just learning about him. I would think that in the 60's he would not have had a large American audience. I am not a musician (can you tell?). But, I think if I had heard him then I would have liked his work. I am going to seek out more videos of his music.

is he just improving or is he playing a song cuz i reallllyyyy need to find a bass clarinet player for a music project. unfortunately, i also have to download a sample of music and i cant find one anywhere!
@Julz796 That's typical Dolphy - improvisation using lot of wide intervals (he loved twelve-tone). Dolphy is in the Ornette Coleman school (although I think he's actually more musical in his approach). There is a song there (Mingus' take on Take the A Train perhaps?), but other than fitting in the basic chord structure Dolphy is creating his own flights of fancy on a bass clarinet. As far as finding a bass clarinetist, you're best bet is either a classical orchestra or a sax player who doubles.
My music teacher is switching me from regular clarinet to bass i am soo excited but i will have to lear everything all over again and probably have to get a new sized reed and a new finger chart
@Everlast237 Nopie. You just have to adjust your embouchure, since it requires a bigger mouthpiece. You'd have to take a bigger 'bite.'
Yes, the reed is bigger, and you're maybe better off with a 2 and a half, or a 3.
New fingering chart, yes, but it's not very different from the clarinet, honestly. You don't have to relearn everything. It's very similar, yet different.
Troll. Witness the greatness that you long to possess and go outside and do something kind or helpful to balance your anger. They're just letters until you learn to read.

I clicked on this video on accident, and sorry I did! What trash! What part of this filth is suppose to be music? These guys should be ashamed pretending to play such noise. These talentless yahoos clearly do not have the talent to play these instruments. This sounds like a old Buick drove through a fenced in petting zoo and whipped out every animal including a dying goat. Garbage like this has no place on You Tube or anywhere else.
Those register jumps are totally insane! I guess the reason he isn't more influential is that that stuff is extremely difficult...on any instrument. The only three guys I can think of who attempt this are Woody Shaw, Joe Diorio, and Aydin Esen.
When the "outside" has been reached through some ingenious harmonic device it has a pleasing and surprising effect, on the other hand.................... Don't buy the emperors new clothes.

You mean you didn't know an instrument could be played so totally randomly and uninterestingly? The saxophone player isn't paying attention, and some other guy walked off stage!
maybe you should watch videos you're interested in. And randomly? There's musical theory there you obviously don't understand, but to people who know a thing or two about music it makes sense. As for uninteresting, well go find some Yngwie or whatever the fuck that loser is called. And that "other guy" is Mingus. Mingus has the right to do whatever the fuck he wants. Why does he even need to be there?
In response to "oOJimmysueOo," OUCH!!! Can't say it wasn't deserved though...Let me bring this back into real perspective....There's a nice contrast between Dolphy & Clifford Jordan's "Chi-Town" saxophone stylings....

wow thats really good i now truly like his music...thats amazing playing its cool how he can hold it up and play that sang amazing!its cool how they just make it up as they go!and it sound brilliant!
Hearing Dolphy play bass clarinet on "out to lunch" was the biggest wake-up call of my musical life. Fantastically brilliant player. This performance is wonderful.
It was the night Dolphy told Mingus he was leaving the band. If you watch the whole video Mingus is bullying him during the announcements..quite nasty! I think there was a bit of bad feeling there...still...gives you more energy!
how could you know THAT was the night....how could you possibly know such a thing unless you have a time machine, and it was docked around the back of the club/theatre and you happened to be hanging around the green room maybe posing as a groupie or something as Eric and Charlie came to blows whilst passing you at that very moment ?
Do a Google search using the search term "Dolphy Mingus notice Oslo". Gene Santoro's Mingus biography "Myself When I Am Real: The Life And Music of Charles Mingus" reports "In Oslo on April 13, 1964, Dolphy finalized his leaving. He would stay in Europe after the tour." You can back up now and ask Santoro your question, but presumably one of the other musicians that he interviewed remembered how and when it happened.
The answer for a question like this is usually: a book.
Unfortunately due to my advancing years I have become quite cynical of almost everything I read, hear and..see also in these days of digital manipulation, so although I do read many books how much should you actually believe....did Andre really take those drugs or is he just trying to sell his book.
Maybe he actually told him on the plane on the way over or at the hotel that morning or etc.......that is all I was commenting on.
My years are advancing also. I understand your attitude.
At least there's evidence that mangabitesdogma didn't fabricate a bit of Mingus/Dolphy trivia on his own say-so.
Their discussion could have been any of those times or even after the show. Specifying a time of day for the conversation does seem too specific and unwarranted.
As a bass clari player myself, this is stunning. If I could get to within 10% of this, I could die happy. Dolphy's range out of the instrument is unbelievable. I must try harder!
Of course the sax sounded better. It has a more vibrant sound than the clarinet, much less the bass clarinet. I also read somewhere that the squeaks were on purpose. But this is awesome. You hardly ever see a bass clarinet solo as good as this one.
I love how eric seems to give a little 'fuck you' to the audience fter he finishes that amazing unaccompanied part. Everyone claps, and he just starts in with the honks, as if to say, "fuck you, I wasn't done yet"
He sound horrible

ドルフィーのバスクラリネットのソロは、とても衝撃的です。英語で言うとhe struck meとでもいうんでしょうか。コールマンとはまた違った、衝撃ですね。最も好きなプレーヤーです。

I can't believe the intervals and rapid jumps in register. He really went where no one had gone before and very few have gone since.

Dolphy is definitely a favorite of The Woodstock Channel.

thats cool.......maybe i can play bass clarinet in jazz band instead of tenor saxaphone

Dolphy. The most underrated sax player of his generation. Had Coltrane not existed, he would have been a god.

To those in the know he was and is.

Hearing Dolphy play bass clarinet on "out to lunch" was the biggest wake-up call of my musical life. Fantastically brilliant player. This performance is wonderful.

me too. that was the album that made me want to play bass clarinet.

Is Mingus taking a bathroom break? whats goin on?
IDhuff 2 years ago
It was the night Dolphy told Mingus he was leaving the band. If you watch the whole video Mingus is bullying him during the announcements..quite nasty! I think there was a bit of bad feeling there...still...gives you more energy!
mangabitesdogma 2 years ago
how could you know THAT was the night....how could you possibly know such a thing unless you have a time machine, and it was docked around the back of the club/theatre and you happened to be hanging around the green room maybe posing as a groupie or something as Eric and Charlie came to blows whilst passing you at that very moment ?

Do a Google search using the search term "Dolphy Mingus notice Oslo". Gene Santoro's Mingus biography "Myself When I Am Real: The Life And Music of Charles Mingus" reports "In Oslo on April 13, 1964, Dolphy finalized his leaving. He would stay in Europe after the tour." You can back up now and ask Santoro your question, but presumably one of the other musicians that he interviewed remembered how and when it happened.
The answer for a question like this is usually: a book.

@DLuebbert
Unfortunately due to my advancing years I have become quite cynical of almost everything I read, hear and..see also in these days of digital manipulation, so although I do read many books how much should you actually believe....did Andre really take those drugs or is he just trying to sell his book.
Maybe he actually told him on the plane on the way over or at the hotel that morning or etc.......that is all I was commenting on.
donnyab 2 years ago
My years are advancing also. I understand your attitude.
At least there's evidence that mangabitesdogma didn't fabricate a bit of Mingus/Dolphy trivia on his own say-so.
Their discussion could have been any of those times or even after the show. Specifying a time of day for the conversation does seem too specific and unwarranted.

bizarre and just a little bit disrespectful to the man playing...ooh I am so bored with this, I'm off for a pee

Mr. Dolphy was the most talented musician of all-time with Mozart and Hendrix.
Surtsi 2 years ago
As a bass clari player myself, this is stunning. If I could get to within 10% of this, I could die happy. Dolphy's range out of the instrument is unbelievable. I must try harder!

I thought the sax solo was better, Dolphy's solo sounded kind of dull and his random squaks were annoying
opus0pocus 2 years ago
Of course the sax sounded better. It has a more vibrant sound than the clarinet, much less the bass clarinet. I also read somewhere that the squeaks were on purpose. But this is awesome. You hardly ever see a bass clarinet solo as good as this one.

eric dolphy is my 2nd favorite jazz musician (coltrane is 1st)
this video is awesome
too bad the tenor solo was cut short
extremesushirolling 2 years ago
I was thinking that if Dolphy had lived longer he certainly would be regarded as highly as Coltrane.
MokshaIS 2 years ago 2
think he is. he was in downbeat jazz hall of fame before coltrane.
jude4312 2 years ago
Amazing. I think Mr. Dolphy was doing some twelve tone theory.

I love how eric seems to give a little 'fuck you' to the audience fter he finishes that amazing unaccompanied part. Everyone claps, and he just starts in with the honks, as if to say, "fuck you, I wasn't done yet"
Masterofcommand 2 years ago 2
I think he was a bit annoyed at the timing of the entry, they were in a different spot to him in the form, he actually wasn't done in that sense.
scotttinkler 2 years ago
Right on. He finished, and then they gave him.... another four bar intro? Yep.
