  • One of Gene's best! Period!

  • One of the very best singers of country music....

  • This is my favororite of Gene's songs, although he has never done anything that I don't like. The first time I saw him live was in Scope in Norfolk Va in 1973 & have been a diehard fan ever since.Lets get him in the Country Music Hall Of Fame while he is still here to see it. He definately deserves it.

  • HI Mary, are you ok?

  • The most underrated song ever. This is Gene's best recording and only was

a minor hit on the Country charts. Beautiful arrangement and probably

the only time we had a horn/trumpet on a Country song.

  • Love me some Gene. Played his stuff since he came out!!! Paper Rosie:)

  • Just a beautiful song sang by the best country singer around. And a tip of the sombrero to Katydidscorner for the absolute best video. I lived in NO back in the 60s. Took me back.......... Lord, Gene can sing.

  • I have forward or told someone to go here. The Marine brass at MCSC that came to our school last month, I told them if they were brass and loved soul & jazz, they had to gohere!. Hope they did, I go here at least once a day. Gets me jump-started

  • This, "Paper Rosie" and "I Don't Need a Thing at All" are the best Gene Watson songs ever!

  • This is what country music is supposed to be about. Great tune, thanks for posting.

  • great song

  • This my favorite of all the wonderful Gene Watson hit songs. I'm a sucker for "story songs". This one, along with "Reuben James" (and many more wotj tje same heart) are so memorable. Thanks for posting it.

  • Ever pay attention to the fact that God spared the French Quarter. Evidently God loves the blues.

  • it sure was good back then!!!! never will we hear such beautiful country music again. sad very very sad.

  • The top three fav. songs of mine from Gene Watson are: The Old Man and his Horn (this song gives me chills each time I hear it), Paper Rosie and Farewell Party, can't anyone else sing these like he does.

  • @dustyroseFL Gene has so many great songs and certainly for me no other singers can deliver them even close to the way he does. This was in my favorites quite a while back, I think it must have had some copyright problems - I lost it somewhere along the line but it's going back into my favorites tonight!

  • Gene Watson - one of the greats and one of a kind. I love his songs. This song and "Paper Rosie" are two of my all-time favorites all genres included.

  • My daddy played this song I think everytime he played, at a gig or at home. Fell asleep to this more than once as a kid. Probably my favorit Gene Watson song for that reason. Got to tell him that a few years ago.

  • its a pleasure to listen to this man, keep em coming, brilliant!

  • gene is awesome

  • Thanks for posting I only have one word to say...AWESOME!

  • Sexy Asian lady is there **busizz4me.info**

  • Love it. Never heard this one, and I'm surprised, I like most anything Gene Watson, and in fact, going to see him and Rhonda Vincent in concert next week. Thanks for sharing. Gwen

  • @cadjunk So, how was the concert? I recenlty saw Gene on the new Crook and Chase shows and he sang Fairwell Party and it seemed that he had lost a little something in his voice when he tried to hit that high note. What did you think. HOw did he sound? I'm sure he was still fantasitc though no matter what....b/c he is. I was blessed to get to see Gene in concert and get his autograph in Paducah KY about 15 years ago.

  • Love this song, wished country was still country like this and makes it better since it was made in my home town! Love new orleans, some good memories of days gone by!

  • I once bought breakfast for a ghost in a little backwoods all-night diner in Louisiana. It was late and I was trying to stay awake for a few more hours of driving. I spent an hour chatting with an old black man who looked like he couldn't afford the cup of coffee in front of him. When I was told that I'd been alone the whole time, I was worried that I was cracking up, but a few days later, I heard this song and a great calm came over me. I understood.

  • @SirBearJones Sweet, sweet story!

  • anyone know who plays the horn on the song? i always wondered but never found out.

  • Hi, I am putting this back on my lead video again. I love all GW songs, but this one is so peppy. :)) Yours is the only one on YT that I know of. Love your video for it. Perfect! I thought I left a comment before but I didn't. Sorry for being so rude. :)) Have had many "steal" it and many comments on this song from visitors. Great post, please keep it up. Take care, Sharon

  • Gene Watson is incredible. I've always loved this song. NO ONE sings a ballad like GW. Thanks for the post.

  • he is on my space, still going strong, he had cancer and almost wiped him out finacially. he had no insurance on himself. he is a joy, for sure. rick m. and old fan.

  • ricochet43 yes we could have lost him.

The country community rallied around him so I heard. Had I known I would have helped as well. Nothing is too much for our Gene.

  • Terrific song sung by a legend. Thanks for posting.*****.

  • What a story to tell in one song! I was right there, in the song, at the bar.

  • he can sing his song better than you and he can sing your song better than you

  • The essence of the song is captured perfectly in this montage....Beautiful

  • What A Great Song This Is and Of Course Sung By The Best,My Favorite,Gene. The Video Is Super, If You Have Never Been To Basin Street,Dont Wait Any Longer,Dont Know What Your Missing. Pat

  • I truly love this kind of country music....I reminisce about the good ol' time. The new country just ain't the same, it ain't got d same soul, simplicity and honesty.

  • One of the most beautiful outros music has ever produced.

  • This is agreat song, beautifully sung. Thanks for posting, and thanks to my friend Mark for introducing me to Gene Watson. Sending this one in return for you, Mark!

  • Reguardless, this is the most amazing singer of all times! Too bad, he stopped ..but as I understand it, he got the shaft! Thats just to bad, cause he's 110% ultimate! cks

  • Gene Watson is absolutely #1. He is singing at the Missouri State Fair with some other country big name older country artists on Wednesday, August 19, 2009.

  • Gene has so many , very good songs. It's hard to make a decision. But, I really think this is his best.

    Great video!

    5*

  • Gene Watson can sing "any" song and make it sound GOOD! I get to see him in concert tomorrow night! --Can't wait!

  • Thanks for uploading. This song tells a nice fun story without having to resort to the goody good eye candy garbage seen so much on CMT these days.

  • God God that man can sing. We been playing Genes music as long as I can remember,in one band or another! Paper Rosie/14 Carot Mind! Fare Well Party makes me just wanna go to the Honky Tonk and drink a cold one! hahaha Ama....zing voice!

  • Herb,

He can sing like that because he knew his own soul and heart and cared about people. He had empathy.

  • Gene Watson is a Gem in country music....a singer like him comes only once in our lifetime.

  • Great !

  • Ralph Emry once introduced Gene as "The Singer's Singer!" He got that one right!

  • This is wonderful. I can close my eyes and listen and be transported to NO with all the fantastic sights and sounds. Thanks - Gene, you are the greatest!!!

  • I like Gene Watsons voice and this was always a favorite of mine. I enjoy the way you intertwined the music with the video.

Thank you so much for this beautiful song and the beautiful video background.

  • I remember when this song hit the charts. It became a personal favorite. Gene has had some great songs, but this and Farewell Party are two of his best.

Thanks for bringing back memories with an outstanding video.

  • Gene's greatest song..Gives me goose bumps!!!

Used to have it on my juke box in the garage..Thanks

  • he's singing about himself

  • this one here's quite good ta know, hits hard. that there's good horn, soft as butter, brings me home

  • What a song to bring back memories of days gone by. The old musicians were so dedicated to their music and this song tells such a great story. Gene does a wonderful job with this song, as he never fails to do. I think only Gene could do this song justice. Country blues is so good and I really do like this video in the way you've created it. Thanks for posting katy. - Paula

  • Thanx a lot!! Was looking for this song for AGES!

  • WOW!THANKS FOR SHARING

  • Gene is an ICON. Love that traditional country music. He and I are the same age and it sure has been wonderful growing up with his music. He is my favorite singer of all including pop, rock, etc. He can't be beat. He gets better and better. The best to you Gene. Sing on; we will be listening!

  • This was the song that made me buy Genes album. Thank you!

  • Ejoyed it I did!!

  • can gene sing or what man i love this guy

  • Never heard before! Great!

  • I thought about making a video to this song. I'm glad I saw your's first. I couldn't make one better than this. It's great!

    Thanks

  • Takes me back to hector in '78.

  • Awesome doesn't even begin to describe this tune. I had actually forgotten about it until just now running across it while listening to other hits by Gene. Just a whale of a talented singer. Young country should be required to learn his music. Course they're not even old enough to walk into a bar so what do they know?

  • How to THANK YOU for this wonderful gift! I've cherished this song since I first heard it way back in the 70's. Since then it's disappeared, of course. Gene Watson no longer is "hot". Lord, is this ever REAL COUNTRY! Thank you, my friend for keeping this alive and for sellessly sharing it with us. God Bless, Larry, Baton Rouge, Louisiana

  • My pleasure Larry. I love Gene Watson and his beautiful voice, and they don't make country songs like his anymore.

  • @cajun1955 So glad there are other GW fans out there. I saw him live at Twitty City years ago and there is no one more personable in the music business than Gene. You know a singer is great when they don't need blaring speakers to drown out their singing imperfections like some I have heard.

  • @cajun1955 I still think he is HOT lol

  • @cajun1955 Gene is still 'HOT" in my eyes.....he is so awesome, but yes, his music isn't too hot for today's standards. Let's all keep requesting a box set and maybe they will come out with one so that we can all have all Gene's music.

  • takes me back to Houston and 1977

  • One of my all time favorites. Thanks for digging it up.

  • fantastic

  • Thanks for this. It is a great song.
