  • Love Dave's wonderfully sloppy guitar solo. Ray needs to sue whoever the hell wrote my woman from tokyo for copyright infringement

  • Jimi Marinos I love you! But sorry, the Kinks have it purrrrfect as usual ox.......

  • The Romantics did the definitive cover of this.

  • After you listen to this....you know where the Ramones got there sound from. The original "Punk Rockers". Ray and Dave Davies!!

  • The lead break in this song is insane!

  • It is true. You HAVE to go back to the early days of rock and the blues and learn the roots. These guys were working with nothing more then a 4 or 8 track tape machine, a few mics’ and used musical equipment. Yet you have clean riffs and lyrics. Like the Sonics “Have love will Travel” and a few other 60’s bands. And if you really listen, I think one could argue at least three bands sampled parts of this some. Try not yelling “My woman from Tokyo at 1: 43. Thanks for the post!

  • this song is so underated it beats andy of the beatles early work

  • Tremendous song, really clear and crisp. Love The Kinks.

  • @semprini20 It said "1964" on the album notes of my "Best Of" compilation, so I concluded this myself. I also said: "I think". Obviously I could be wrong.

But can we agree how good it sounds? Album notes can be wrong, as we know.

Ray is trying to "ape" the sound of the lead singer of the Kingsmen on here (also acc. to the notes, and my ears, btw).

The musicians themselves laugh at these comments. The Beatles were fantastic... so were the Kinks. Amen.

  • I think this predated You Really Got Me.

  • @TheKrichard Not quite. It was actually recorded in February 1966 (same session as "Dedicated Follower of Fashion") but was not released until June 1968 as the B side of the "Days" single.

  • @judez23mac Thank you very, very much for your comment about the Kinks I could not have put it better myself

The Kinks were robbed, as you say, their talent and quality of music was ignored

I respect your love for the Beatles but I also agree that the Kinks are better than them.

  • Dave is such a punk in this picture.

  • in love

  • The middle sounds like the same chord progression as "My Woman From Tokyo"

  • Oh man, I have to learn this on drums!

  • Amazing thing about this fantastic song - it went unreleased for two full years, before it appeared on the B-Side of the "Days" single in the summer of 1968.

  • Such a great band. My favourite 60's group next to the beatles.

  • Aw man, it's only rock and roll. So, let's all raise a glass to the rock stars of the past.

  • kick ass song

  • So the Stones in first place and a few other bands in second place, came face to face with the Beatles' popularity. But I want to make it clear,NO ONE could ever reach my heart as the Kinks music does.Ray and Dave are marvelous musicians, but it took a while for them to get their style straight after ''you really got me''& "Tired of waiting.."etc. and after 1965,when bad management got them far from america and big stardom..that's when Ray decided to write like he does, thank God for that.. L.L.T.K.

  • This song should've been a hit too, but we can't say they were to be at a better position than Beatles,Stones or other bands. The Beatles had a longer repertoire than most people then, and a long string of hits. They came out first, and as pioneers playing as such they had an awesome sound and their songs had a tremendous power to reach masses. The Stones with all their failures (they wanted to be sloppy and raunchy anyway) were the only ones to come up close to the Beatles' power ..

  • The Kinks were barred from touring in the States early in their career which didn't help them.Great song by an underrated band.Love their raw sound.Thanks.

  • always loved the kinks - but they had everything working against them in us - bad management and at times no management - i also think somebody in the band had a physical altercation with a record exec on a early tour - and they were banned from the us for five years - i saw these guys in the early seventies - they really put on a great show

  • Damn why'd the Kinks have to be banned in America? Then they might have gotten the attention they deserved!

  • This song owns - end o' story.

  • I love this song, but in a lot of ways it reminds me of The Stones "Let's Spend The Night Together."

  • This is the pure, uncluttered sound of freakin' great Brit Invasion rock and roll! (Did Romantics nick this for "What I like about You" or WHAT????)

GOD SAVE THE KINKS! Rest in Peace, Pete Quaife.

  • The Romantics DID an awesome cover of this song! It immediately follows "What I Like About You" on the album.

  • @mcfarber - Whenever I run out of energy, I just watch "What I LIke about You" on Youtube. Your comment has me going out to buy this album! Yes - BUY AN ALBUM - not download - how retro, eh?

  • @rocktenniscat It's ok man - I buy albums too.

  • mp3iffy is the best site to get this mp3. google mp3iffy.

  • That which didn't kill the Kinks as a group made them STRONGER.

They weren't mollycoddled like other groups, LOL. They forged their own way.

  • Awww.... that awesome Dave Davies solo at 1:20!

  • so hot

  • The guitar tone, maybe slightly and deliberately out of tune may have influenced The Stones Monkey Man. Just a thought.

  • One of the top ten guitar solos in the history of Rock. And the Audacity of Out-of-tune. Love it!

  • I've always wondered which of them was responsible for the Kinks varied and unique sounds. How did they decide what guitars got picked and why. How much guitar playing did Ray really do on songs. When they differed on instrumention, who won and why. Did the fur fly in the studio? Would really love to know.

  • This is just as good as "You Really Got Me" and "All Day And All Of The Night" LONG LIVE THE KINKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • and all this time I thought this was a Romantics tune??? I love this song.

  • @Stigbool Haha, me too.

  • right ? this is STILL a hit and is part of the start-stop riff genre that the Kinks originated!

  • How was this not a hit???

  • @guyzsly

Have you heard the Romantics version of this?

  • @guyzsly -- it wasn't a hit because it was recorded in 1966 and released as a B-side for "Days" in June 1968, by which time the Kinks weren't exactly filling huge concert halls in the UK, and were still banned in the US.

  • @guyzsly It was the B side of "Days". I'm looking at my original 45.

  • @guyzsly You could say that about 20 different Kinks songs. They were awesome.

  • @guyzsly

Because most people dont know what music is supposed to be. All you can do is feel bad for them because they are really missing out on one of lifes greatest pleasures. Ray Davies should be as famous as Lennon or Elvis but i bet if you went out on the street and asked around 9 out of 10 people would have no idea who he is or how he had as much to do with the evolution of music as anybody. Also, the guy still sounds great! if he comes to your city dont miss it!!!

  • @guyzsly Might have something to do with the fact that it was the B-Side for "Reprise" which was their worst-selling single. Don't get me wrong, I love everything by the Kinks, but it makes sense that this wasn't going to get very big, especially since it sounds so similar to ADAN.

  • what agreat song...too bad nobody's ever heard it..just a throwaway B-side for the Kinks...if someone wrote this today it woulg be'top of the pops and they could retire on the royalties...

    the mind reels and boggles,,,

  • Hey,The Romantics covered this tune.

  • bastards : )

  • Scott old chap, why don't you go suck a dinga dong. This a great song, and if you don't like it, go feck off kthxn bye now.

  • Scott old boy, if you don't like it go back to listening to the "perfect harmonies", and pedestrian drumming and guitar playing of the Beatles.

  • The PERFECT rock/pop song. Should have been a #1. thanks for posting

  • Over produced, I think this sounds about as raw as you can get!

  • i don't think scott even knows what he means by his comment. i know i don't. overproduced? compared to what?

  • @ScottAln05.

    It's perfect

  • @bobbydylanio, Yes, all Kinks tunes are perfect. Without exception. Just type "Kinks" on YouTube and read the comments. All their songs are perfectly perfect examples of perfection.

  • I couldnt dissagree more

  • Kinks' songs are not all perfect, of course, nor even always perfectly sung. Are anybody's? But Kinks' songs are always exciting, imaginative, thought-provoking, frequently chime in with an experience of your own and often carry a riff or hook you cannot get out of your head for days. They also reflect any and every mood, feeling, sentiment and excitement you will ever experience, so there is always an appropriate Kinks' song for the occasion. In the end it's a matter of taste & preference.

  • @Galericulus good apologetics... what impresses me about the KINKS is all the musical genre's they exhibited over the decades... and lyrical content... geeez, serious, to comical... upbeat, to downtrodden... they could write songs in every shade of blues...

  • @upthcreek. I agree entirely. Incidentally, I love the name you have chosen for yourself. Memorable, funny and showing that you do not take yourself, or life, too seriously.

  • I keep on listening to this over and over again!

  • romantics covered this gem

  • gggrrrrr covers i hate them and wish they were banned ggrrrrrr

  • @jamreaper At least he didn't say Green Day.

  • lol : )

  • 5 stars and from where i'm sitting the only issue with your timing is that you didn't do this vid sooner,,,hugs ,,,love bry

  • 5stars!!!!!!!great taste you have,,greatvids,,,godbless,bry

  • The issue is with timing, the Beatles came along at just the right time, I love the Beatles, but the value of these bands The Kinks, The Who,Small Faces, Bee Gees remains an integral part of the music scene in the 60s. They all contributed to the wonderful teenage experience that I enjoyed, and to have these bands as a musical backdrop to my life at that time was priceless, I love them all!

  • I love this song

  • Did Nicky Hopkins plays piano on this?

  • b side of days ,the kinks words fail me ,ray never failed

  • I love the Beatles. But I LOVE the Kinks! They were indeed ROBBED! Their sound is timeless! It is still as HOT today as it was when it first came out in the 60's!

I love this version of She's Got Everything. It's better then the recording I have. I'd like to find out where this one came from.

  • It's from the Ultimate Collection

  • thats your opinion

  • You can hear me sing if you go to my vidsxxxx Jude & the Whatevers xxxxx

  • Well, well, I think that the more I listen to the Kinks' music.... this stuff, not the stuff we all know, I reach this conclusion....THEY WAS ROBBED!....I've always been Beatle obsessed, and I really lov'em....But the Kinks writing is better, and so is their understanding of whichever decade they are writing for. Possibly slicker and cooler dudes - they didn't have popcentric management...And I bet Paul Mcartney goes green every time he hears Waterloo Sunset

  • @judez23mac

Not just because I grew up with it, but there hasn't been a better decade for songwriters and musicians than the sixties.

  • Comment removed

  • all the songs from the kinks are very good

    I love rock&roll!!!

  • This one guy said Revolver was better than Village Green Preservation Society. I couldnt help but laugh at such a rediculous comment. He even said Yellow Submarine was better.

  • Revolver is I'm afraid. Yellow Submarine is also close.

  • Comment removed

  • LOL!

  • I agree, pernicketty. Dave Davies did include this piece during his solo tours in the late '90s and early 2000s. I think Dave had a lot to do with this song, as the guitar solos are ripping. Still, it is a relatively obscure classic, as you've said!

  • For a long time I've believed that this is one of the Kinks' very best songs. I'm amazed that it still remains an obscurity to this day.

  • Days is a great song, but I can't believe I have finally heard this FANTASTIC Kinks song finally...It's long past due and I can' help wonder what else I've been missing! My best friend, a drummer , had the Kinks Greatest Hits LP in 1966(!!!) and I finally heard this in 2009? What's wrong with this "picture"??? Help me, what else can you recommend that I'v missed over the years? Any suggestions will be GREATLY APPRECIATED, from one KINKS fan to another , many thanks KINKS FOREVER!!! TMW

  • Try "This is where I belong"," I'm not like everybody else" "See my Friends", and "Too much on my mind". You can't go wrong with anything from Village green preservation society or Arthur.

  • Big sky, and Do you remember Walter as well.

  • check out I Need You, House in the Country, David Watts and Mr. Churchill Says for some more great early rockers

  • i met ray davies in austin he signed my kinks arthur cd cover for me.

  • oooh wooow ^^

  • Yeah I agree, a totally great Mod track. Played this at the Northampton event just the other week as it happens - went down a storm.

  • totally modernist, and modernism bridges all ages....it's away of life..."if you ain't somebody, you may as well jump in the sea an drown!"

  • Sin duda, un grupo que no puede faltar en nuestras colecciones! magnifica cancion, junto a all the day all the night y louie louie, de lo mejor.

    gracias por subirlo.

    un saludo!

  • Precioso, gracias dario por compartir.

    SOLE

  • AWESOME!!!! 5*********

  • And the award for Nastiest-Gnarliest Solo goes to...RAY DAVIES!

  • I think you mean Dave Davies.

  • kinks were doing what the beatles were doing. the only difference is that the kinks took it twice as deeper and fucking rocked it out, which made them so fucking great. very underrated band.

  • Their best song in my opinion, and they had lots of great songs. Just think of it, this one was used as a B-side!

  • Highly underrated! The best band.

  • Fucking great band... What can I say about them? They're just marvelous... Incredible amongst the incredible mates... One of the best bands ever. No doubt about it.

  • in Vienna it was introduced as their new single

later they recognized that it was "only" the

    "B"-Side from "Days"

  • 's mod mod world, luv

  • my all time favorite track by this teffific band.

  • Big buncha thanks, Cool. I've been a fan since at least '65 but never heard this cut. I gave it five, but then I always give my all-time fave UK band 5.

  • The Romantics? The Romantics came long after this. The Kinks influenced many so bands that came later it's not funny.

  • Read my post before criticizing. I was answering an earlier question about who did a cover of this song. Pay attention!! Kinks are the best band ever, no dispute

  • This is a true Jam

  • fuck the jonas brothers the beatles and the kinks fucking rock

  • fuckin hell i didn't know about this song this is ace

  • Will you listen to that awesome Dave Davies guitar solo. I honestly think he's up there with Jimmy Hendrix and Eric Clapton.

  • just as great, but different. as the years go on, i see more and more greatness in the kinks.

  • Anybody can tell me where I can download this song?

  • hey man. im naked!! p

  • There's a band from Detroit who does an excellent cover of this. I can't remember. Anyone know who I'm trying to think of??

  • The Romantics do a great cover.

  • The Romantics

  • to the people who gave my post 2 thumbs down -- you should read the whole thread, folks. I was answering an earlier post about a band that did a cover of this song. Relax.

  • Sorry for the misunderstanding. When I read it I just saw the page it was on. By it self it seemed as if you were saying The Romantics came first, and did it better. Again sorry. My point was how much The Kinks Influenced countless other bands.

  • Splendid.

  • perfect

  • I love the kinks thank you

  • This is my favorite Kinks song.

It's a lot different from most of their stuff, but it's still wonderful.

and man, those boys were gorgeous.

  • It actually has that same early KinKs-type riff to it...if they had been more raw with it, it could have had a sound like 'Till the End of the Day' or 'All Day and All of the Night'

  • Anyone here ever read "Kink"? I wonder why Mick and Dave didn't get along...

  • I've been trying to find that

But its not in any bookshops!

    D:

    Also

Why is Dave Davies pulling a face like someone just farted?

    Still looks pretty though :3

  • Kink is really a good read. Get it.

  • Yeah it's Mick Avory

  • I always thought the drummer was great. Mick Avory?

  • Did you know that Mick Avory was kicked out of the Rolling Stones, because he wasn't good enough?

I'm a Rolling Stones fanatic, but I think Mick Avory is great!

Thank God the drummer that replaced Mick, Charlie Watts, isn't too bad himself!

  • I read that Mick Avory wasn't ready to go as a full time drummer because he had a job at the time...but eventually went to the KinKs ...he is a great drummer.

  • Hi,

Yes, you might be right there. Maybe Mick was not at the level he reached later when he became the really fantastic drummer he is! He's one of the three great sixties drummers, in the awesome company of Keith Moon and Charlie Watts.

  • the kinks b sides were fantastic ie rats b of ape man and mr churchill says bside of ?cant remember !!!

  • probably Victoria

  • Check out Dave Davies live from the Bottom Line c. 1997. Starts the show with a rousing version of this klassic kink kut.

  • Which album is this from?

  • The first album appearance was on "The Kink Kronikles", a 1972 Reprise Records compilation. I believe it was originally released in 1968 as the "B" side of "Days", but was recorded in 1966 Were THOSE the days, or what?

  • I always thought "And She Was" by the Talking Heads borrowed heavily from this song.

  • They were wild

  • ...mind that catchy riff in the middle starting around 1:35 - wonder if Deep Purple found inspiration here when making "Woman from Tokyo "

  • Where have i heard this song before? Did another group sing this song besides the Kinks?

  • the Romantics covered it, came on right after What I like about You

  • If this song could be remixed, ditching the frankly annoying (Nicky Hopkins?) piano, this would be a more familiar, listenable song. The Romantics version, regretfully, destroys the Kinks version, and the guitars are in tune.

  • I like this version better than The Romatics version.

  • So that's where I heard it from.

  • I think this was the b side to days

  • it was indeed, recorded during the face to face 1966 sessions, anyone know if a stereo mix exists?.

  • there was a box set of remastered kinks, but it wasn't very good, nor can i find a decent APEMAN or GOD'S CHILDREN. but thanks for the vid

  • Another great song from a great band; most of their best stuff from 66-69 or so was rarely heard in the USA during that time. Get "Kink Kronikles" -every song is, well, great!
