It looks more of a gourmet restaurant than what I'd envision when I think of Denny's. The menu appears quite a lot more local too - even the western food looks more local. When I think of Denny's, I'd typically think of american breakfast, pancakes, burgers and maybe some finger food like cheese sticks, samplers and what not, I think it is an okay restaurant by itself, but if someone who's been to Denny's overseas went there expecting the same thing, they'd be disappointed.
I knew they leaned heavily to Japanese foods, but I wouldn't have guessed the extent of it. There seems to be nothing at all from the American menu (I had expected there would at least be a nod to the burgers/breakfast diner food that they serve in the states). It's obvious though that a lot of thought has gone into the presentation of every aspect of the experience. An interesting detail: they use the "classic" Denny's logo which has been out of use for some time now in the United States.
The fan shaped vegetable with the holes in it, you said that's Daikon Radish. Isn't it actually Lotus Root? The yellow being the Takuan/Pickled Daikon yes? My apologies if I'm mistaken but I loooooove Nimono and the Lotus I use in it is identical to that when cut.
Looks very different from a US Dennys. No breakfast food in sight! That's at least half of the menu here. I don't think you'll find rice on the Dennys menu here either. Also, they don't have alcohol.
I can tell you the first difference to the ones in the USA. You weren't stuck to the table afterward because of the massive amount of syrup they spill on the table. Strangely enough, the one in my neighborhood is geared towards Chinese immigrants but they don't go there.lol
Interesting how restaurants in the US go to Asia & get makeovers. A typical Denny's in the US does not serve alcohol. It's known for one thing--grease. It's a 24-hr diner--you go there to get a burger, fries, a milkshake, and bad service. Not sushi or anything FRESH. Pizza Hut in Asia looks like a 4-star Italian restaurant. Even McD, Taco Bell and Popeye's are cleaner, w/ better, fresher food. Why are they so unappealing in their home country. Maybe b/c the US is used to low-quality food? Dunno.
It is so different from the Denny's restaurants we have here (USA) :o It looks so much more classy in Japan, and the food looks even tastier! Not to mention healthier XD
lol Dude you should come to the states to a Dennys you'll be leaving for Japan that same hour No beer wine etc and 99% of the food is deep fried or fried those things not fried Salad Pot roast only because its pre made heat up also gravy / Mashed potatoes powder mix even your Omelet pre mixed that Dennys would be a hit here
"Im sure you'll find it a little bit different" I found it ALOT different lol I used to go to the Denny's in the states all the time and that doesnt really look like the food I'm used to :D
Dennys here is absolutely terrible. I have to reference the family guy joke where peter says he is going to punish his body...hes going to dennys. Too true.
Denny's in Japan often open 24 hours and serves pancakes (called "Hot Cakes" in Japan) and mashed potatoes etc. so you and your buddy don't have to cancel your 2:00AM feast.
That is nothing like American Denny's, other than the name...I'm surprised that they can still be considered part of the chain. The ice cream looks awesome though.
I had a stupid question for ya and I'm not sure if you've already covered this. How is the pay wage to the cost of living? Fair, good, doable, not good at all? For example if I were a Sterile Processing Technician living in Japan, would I be comfortably living?
that restaurant is way to nice to be a Denny's. there aren't the required number of Hispanics to operate the grills. also, to be a true Denny's, you would be able to go at 2am and order some chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes with a buddy who gets a full stack of pancakes. you also have to split a sampler platter of chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, and jalapeno poppers.
The menu from Denny's in Japan is vastly different from the Western Denny's menu! It's sort of weird, considering it's a Western chain; I expected there to be one or two changes like at McDonald's, but it looks like they're using the brand name to sell their own food, haha.
Psst. Those are lotus roots. :x Daikon doesn't have holes (at least, not that big... it has tiny threads similar to celery). Somewhere someone started saying it wrong, but daikon pickles resemble large white carrots when whole, and are often served shredded raw, simmered in half-moons, or pickled in slices or strips as in bettarazuke or, my favorite, takuan. Both can be seen on wikipedia under "daikon". Source: I'm an ethnic food addict. c: I don't mean any offense! <3
I agree with Lemonrind below me. A normal menu from any Denny's in America features mostly stereotypical American breakfast favorites. Fried eggs, bacon, waffles and pancakes, omelettes...etc. (P.S: I don't feel innappropriate calling the American version of the menu the "normal" one, since the restaurant originated in our country. Otherwise I would just say "our version".)
There doesn't seem to be much resemblance to Denny's in North America. American Denny's is a place you go when it's breakfast time and you feel like abusing your body. The menu consists of eggs, bacon, toast, butter, sausage, cheese, fried hash brown potatoes, pancakes, french toast, etc. You then cover everything in butter, maple-flavoured corn syrup, and ketchup, and voila!
There may be some Dikon on those plates although don't you believe that the fan shape with the holes in it is Lotus Root~? Or does pickling make the holes... or did they go to the trouble of cutting those from the Dikon to better pickle that root vergetable? :) thanks~ ~FC
the eggs produced in Japan are tightly controlled in quality, so they don't cause food poisoning even if we have them in the raw, and uncooked/soft-boiled eggs are very popular in Japan!

@DarkNSF I ride a raw egg on rice and eat breakfast every day. There cannot be still the thing poisoned by food. The Japanese egg is clean from a shipment stage. And it is the art how it is not poisoned by food that the contents do not stick to a husk when they broke an egg. Because bacteria stick to a husk. I'm sorry in 'Engrish'.
Hello TJC! Can I ask a few questions about your Japanese? How much do you know, how long did it take you to learn it, and how useful is it in practical use of everydaylife in Japan?
@TheJapanChannelDcom sorry Bro, Black people in the US DO NOT eat at Denny's if they are seen there... they will be rediculed. It's a long story. If u wanna aske me, hit my box. Also Im coming to Tokyo in 2 weeks. Should be great!... i HOPE.
Nice. I would like to have a Japanese Denny's here in California. Other posters have been correct -- Denny's here is pretty much heart-attack-on-a-plate, and not very good either (at least the ones I've been to). This one looked fab -- if I hadn't JUST eaten I would be really hungry right now!
@kua514 favourite of ALL Canadians now. I've been eating it since I was a kid and after partying pretty much everyone gets poutine. And thats in Vancouver. Oh and I would be very surprised if they had it.
less artery clogging then in America, we have a new grilled cheese with mozzarella sticks inside of it in our denny's it's only rivaling the cheeseburger with two grilled cheese sandwiches AS bread for the burger... Seriously I'm not joking about that. :-D I'd rather eat at a Japanese Denny's any day
There is not a single thing on that entire menu that is sold at a Denny's here in America. I rather like their menu in Japan. Every time I go to Denny's here, I have to try to find the least greasy thing on the menu to eat. Also, our Denny's really advertises hard towards the all day Western style breakfast with your staples like eggs, toast, bacon, pancakes, grits, hashbrowns... Japans menu seems much healthier. I will be sure to eat at one in when I get to Tokyo in March.
I can't stand the Denny's here in the USA and I haven't eaten there in about 10 years. All of the food is greasy and really bad for you (lots of sodium, cholesterol, saturated fats, etc.). The Japanese Denny's menu is HUGE and tons of variety. I love the extensive dessert pages. I'd love to eat at a Denny's in Japan!
Denny's in Japan looks amazing ^^ Denny's CA is typical western with some western style Asian meals like in Japan that is eastern style western meals. In Japanese menus, do they have non-alcoholic drinks (because I don't drink) what are the typical drinks they have on the menu? Thank you in advance for the info ^^
Denny's in the USA is a step above fast food while in Japan it will pass as fairly nice dining. In America you would never consider taking a date to Denny's (not if you ever wanted to date the girl again at least) while in Japan Denny's is a perfectly fine date destination. Nice video! ~Kurt :-)
@Yovilleaaaa236 Depends on the person. I've seen some people make an x with their arms or fingers and that usually means that they don't want to be recorded. Not sure if it happens in Japan.
Interesting video. Denny's adapted their menu to the local tastes and they have a nice selection. Totally different than the Denny's in the U.S. The American Denny's features a "Bacon Slamburger", which is a burger topped with (potato) hash browns, an egg, two slices of bacon and smothered in a cheese sauce.
Yeah, this looks way different from a typical Denny's menu in the States. It looks like the quality of food might be better there, though. But it didn't seem like they had any breakfast items, whereas as Denny's here has lots. However, we don't have nearly as many desserts.
That egg near the end looked delicious. It was so runny, yet easy to plop onto the food without breaking. The color looked very fresh (and delicious). Eggs in America are generally too small, sometimes overcooked, and not enough yolk.
Is there anyplace in Japan to get pancakes, bacon, scrambled eggs and hash browns?
Hard to believe Japanese people are germaphobes when they eat undercooked eggs. Many places in the US won't serve them and the ones that do all have a foodborne illness disclaimer on the menu.
@shockferret Eggs are pasteurized and delivered under strict hygienical control, so we don't have to worry about Salmonella when eating them uncooked.
I'd say the main difference between the Japanese menu and the menu in Midwest America is that the American version always ALWAYS has a huge breakfast menu in the front with omlettes and hashbrowns and then has a much smaller lunch and dinner section in the back with steak chicken ect. But the general atmosphere seems the same. Are they open all night like here in america?
Their Denny's looks like it serves food that is SOOOOOO much better. From what I've seen, Denny's here does a lot of "microwaving" and not as much actual "real cooking" of food. LOL. There actually was some "sizzling" underneath his steak. I agree. Denny's in other places = not so good. :(
Weird that you would go to a Denny's to eat traditional Japanese food, when you could get that anywhere else in Japan. Kinda like going to McDonald's to eat some Udon noodles and squid.

Whoa! Thats a lot different than the denny's I work at in the states! They actually have alcohol on the menu! Thanks for posting this dude!

I really don't like eggs like that. I have to have my yolk completely cooked.
kwill81 1 year ago
@kwill81 runny yolk is really good on bread. i bet it's good on rice too. I'ma try it.

It's a lot cleaner than the ones in California. Looks a lot nicer too. ;)

It's probably already been mentioned, but that "thing with the holes in it" at 2:19 is definitely lotus root and not daikon.
thijsseghers 1 year ago
that daikon looks more like lotus root and besides wouldn't it be a different colour if it was pickled ??
joshNgab 1 year ago
Denny's in the USA is a step above fast food while in Japan it will pass as fairly nice dining. In America you would never consider taking a date to Denny's (not if you ever wanted to date the girl again at least) while in Japan Denny's is a perfectly fine date destination. Nice video! ~Kurt :-)

I love picture menu! They often saved my life in Japan ;)
chrismecking 1 year ago
I was just wondering... Isn't the thing with holes lotus root? Because it looks much more similar to lotus root than to daikon.
Sorry if I'm wrong.
Love your videos, so continue good work :)
AzDHeX 1 year ago 3
@AzDHeX i was thinking that it looked like lotus root too why would they bother putting holes in the radish??

is there an IHOP in Japan?
LiPCast 1 year ago
i find western restaurants are overly expensive...but from time to time it is i nice treat...
with the egg its not always fully cooked because this is how the japanese like them...so you may want to ask them to cook more

the menu is way bigger than the american denny's menu

If all the weird people are at Denny's at 2am, then it is exactly the same as Denny's in America

i know this off topic but do japanese find it disrespectfull to film them?
Yovilleaaaa236 1 year ago 2
@Yovilleaaaa236 Depends on the person. I've seen some people make an x with their arms or fingers and that usually means that they don't want to be recorded. Not sure if it happens in Japan.

Interesting video. Denny's adapted their menu to the local tastes and they have a nice selection. Totally different than the Denny's in the U.S. The American Denny's features a "Bacon Slamburger", which is a burger topped with (potato) hash browns, an egg, two slices of bacon and smothered in a cheese sauce.
junkie4vids 1 year ago
If Denny's United States menu looked good like the one in Japan, I might actually go there to eat sometimes.
grassnuggets 1 year ago
ya....completely differnt. lol so why is it a denny's i wonder. Don't care too much for denny's in any country really. the hambag looks good though.

Yeah, this looks way different from a typical Denny's menu in the States. It looks like the quality of food might be better there, though. But it didn't seem like they had any breakfast items, whereas as Denny's here has lots. However, we don't have nearly as many desserts.
kittenwithagun 1 year ago 2
@kittenwithagun
Those "sets" are breakfast in Japan.
Rice, Miso soup, vegetables, maybe an egg that is usually poached and some meat or fish with a salad.
There is also something called "Omu-rice," which is basically an omelet with rice stuffed in the middle.
TigerPantsRocks 1 year ago
@kittenwithagun
The breakfast menu is a different menu ^_^
TheJapanChannelDcom 1 year ago
is it open all day, to the point you see people just going to denny's at absurd o' clock? i used to go to dennys at like 2am sometimes.
usamimiproductions 1 year ago
That egg near the end looked delicious. It was so runny, yet easy to plop onto the food without breaking. The color looked very fresh (and delicious). Eggs in America are generally too small, sometimes overcooked, and not enough yolk.

Wow, VERY different from an American Denny's.
Is there anyplace in Japan to get pancakes, bacon, scrambled eggs and hash browns?
Hard to believe Japanese people are germaphobes when they eat undercooked eggs. Many places in the US won't serve them and the ones that do all have a foodborne illness disclaimer on the menu.
shockferret 1 year ago
@shockferret Eggs are pasteurized and delivered under strict hygienical control, so we don't have to worry about Salmonella when eating them uncooked.

I don't know why everyone is saying the American Denny's sucks.. It looks almost the same - just different food and a calmer interior design.
I can't get over that green tea ice cream! I want to try some.

is it less akward to eat alone in a japanese cafe or restaurant?
animefreak1467 1 year ago
I'd say the main difference between the Japanese menu and the menu in Midwest America is that the American version always ALWAYS has a huge breakfast menu in the front with omlettes and hashbrowns and then has a much smaller lunch and dinner section in the back with steak chicken ect. But the general atmosphere seems the same. Are they open all night like here in america?

I enjoy the Denny's salmon breakfast, here in Japan.
Unfortunately it comes with natto.

Our Denny's (USA) is kinda lame compared to this :/
LinuxBruiser 1 year ago
No Grand Slam Breakfasts or skillet meals there! Hambawg! LOL They sure give you a large portion there, huh?
meb659 1 year ago
The next thing they'll probably do is putting egg on icecream! :p
kennethoes 1 year ago
Their Denny's looks like it serves food that is SOOOOOO much better. From what I've seen, Denny's here does a lot of "microwaving" and not as much actual "real cooking" of food. LOL. There actually was some "sizzling" underneath his steak. I agree. Denny's in other places = not so good. :(

I have a question. Is it considered weird/rude to brush your teeth in a public restroom in Japan?

@hannahbanana93 no, not at all! (I am a Japanese man.)

Weird that you would go to a Denny's to eat traditional Japanese food, when you could get that anywhere else in Japan. Kinda like going to McDonald's to eat some Udon noodles and squid.
