The only problem with programs like Rome:Total War, is this: What about logistics? I mean, how do you feed a 30,000 man army on the march? Sickness, starvation, attrition, etc. Let's see these armchair generals deal with that!

@ChiefOren you do know they easily dealt with it its not hard dealing with attrition... all that really happens is that the supplies you bring will heavily slow down you march..

@goku21060 Supply trains, guards, raids, distribution, depots, and of course the ever present rebels. Suppression of the local populace. I could go on. The fighting army consists at most about 10% of the entire force needed before marching. Not to mention attrition from health problems, crime, prostitution (can't forget the whores). etc. A real general spends years just planning, and months moving. reality.

@valeagathon The Germans numbers were overwhelming, that's the problem the Romans faced yes, but they also greatly underestimated the German warrior's skills, they were savage warrior-like people with savage warrior-like culture and always willing to sacrifice in combat, but still not as skilled as the Roman Legionaries, also a lot less disciplined.

Now I'm not saying the Romans wouldn't of had a chance to win, I pretty much think the opposite. But see the problem was that they were being heavily invaded by skilled Germans all the time later on the Saxons aswell, and thus, over-time, getting the military manpower exhausted so there were nothing to spare in the end.

Cos they simply, did not have them, either way they were owned by the other side of the Roman empire, or they were garrisoned at other stations to defend against invading hordes, you see, as I said earlier, there were always barbarians pushing the lines, and they weren't bad fighters

IF the Romans were not seperated in their squad formation then their fighting abilities of losing would have been very hard. though the barbarians love to charge and since they were charging by foot that gives them a disadvantage. but still i would not have seperated the troop squad formation because anyone can simply go through.

The reason why Rome had small squads was for organizational purposes. Though in the small squads the Romans were a bit weaker, that was actually solved with experience. By the third year of a legionary's service term, he should be as good alone on the field as he would be with his buddies.

I know that Romans tried to use tactics to scare people, just like barbarians use to scream to taunt their opponents, but barbarians tend to just charge the opponent which is also fine too because brute strength can be a benefit in battle. Not a problem, but keep in mind: barbarians would usually be more mobile because they were lightly armored, Roman troops throughout most of its history were very heavily armored. I have worn chain mail before and I can say, just with that I wouldn't want to be running very much.

Wow. I never wore any kind of armor. Not even leather and I always asked myself because I love to play video games, why people wore certain clothes. Like why wear leather instead of silk, or why where silver armor instead of bronze? I wonder how people back then did battle because I know all that must be heavy and the sweat must have been crazy. Also the pain inflicted because even though they have armor I am sure that a hit would give them a bruise like a bulletproof vest. Am I right?

War has been hell for as long as it has lasted. Warfare has changed a lot but before the invention of firearms, its basically the same thing, but with the changing of weapons and tactics. As far as clothing and armor, depending on what faction you where in you would wear and use what was best in that faction. Some forms of armor where crap and weren't really worth wearing, however some was so great you would even feel a hit. Its all up to who and when. Feel free to ask if you have questions.
