  • personally i dont think that she deserved to name that new spin."

its just a holding position before going into a biellmann spin.

    just my personal thoughts! :)

  • EWWWWWWW what a trashy looking spin! Its should be called "KAYLA'S SNATCH"

  • I have seen skaters do this spin b4 but Her spin is cleaner so great job u r a talented hard worker skater

  • impressive but nothing special

  • cause we have never seen this done before :S.....

  • why are there 6 dislikes? :(

  • Well, on the other hand- Biellmann did not invent the spin she has named. It was already done in the 60´s by a girl in the CCCP, (The Soviet Union.)

  • Well, on the other hand- Biellmann did not invent the spin she has named. It was already done in the 60´s by a girl in the CCCP, (The Soviet Union.)

  • what song is she skating to? it sounds soo familar!

  • @lolmonkey98 - kayla wasnt the one at nationals that year making the fuss about the spin, it was the technical panel and the judges that said to her that she got the extra 2 marks for the spin and that she gets to name it! she was just doing it for an extra level on the spin. she isnt a lier or a cheat! stop trolling and get a life!

  • kayla catch = basically part of the pearl spin.

yet the pearl is much better.

  • Its a nice spin but not as good at the pearl spin.

  • her jumps arent great and shes seems a bit ridged...

but her spins are great! (:

  • ive skated on ice with her

  • that double axel was under-rotated

  • Thats Kayla Doig from my rink :)

Why are yous all critizing her jump whe this video was made about ther spin "Kayla Catch" first of all she invented it and second she was the first Austrlian do make their own spin! :)

  • @StanlyyDAH actually, she didn't invent it. it's just a tighter-pulled version of a Biellmann spin. it's been done before..

  • I saw Michele Cho of the USA perform this spin way back in the early '90s, before she ended her competitive career...saw it at the '94 Nationals...the amazing thing was not only could she get the blade that close to her face, she could pump it up and down as she spun...it was a shame she left the skating world, but I hope she's happy, wherever she is now.

  • Thats where i train lol

  • ooooooooooo thats so cool!!!

  • i'm sorry, but some ppl here said tat she cheated her double axel, like how is it possible to cheat a jump wen ur in the middle of the ice without using any items to help herself jump higher?!? yes, she underotated the double axel n landed after 2 rotation, but tat not cheating!! it's common sense, in figure skating jumps, u only can underotate the jump, two foot the landing or fall, so how the fuck is a jump cheated?!? she didnt use anything to help her jump higher or rotate longer!!

  • A jump is "Cheated" when it is underotated, prerotated, two footed for wrong edge. Basically, all these things are what skaters can do try try and help get themselves more power or rotation to the jump without fully rotating or using the correct edge or etc etc etc...therefore these are cheated jumps.

  • do u kno wat the definition of cheat is?? here r sum of the definitions: 1. to defraud; swindle, 2. to deceive; influence by fraud, 3. to elude; deprive of something expected, 4. to practice fraud or deceit!! ya, i dunt think she did any of the above!! leaving the term "cheat" absured!!

  • Sorry...I didn't mean to upset you, but the word used in figure skating is "cheat" when a jump is done incorrectly. And technically it meets your definitions. For one, "deprive of something expected"--less than the expected full rotations of a jump. It's just a term used in skating...

  • i'm not mad, it's just as a skater, nobody wants to underotate a jump!! n u cant cheat it cuz ther always a camera filmin u so the judges watch slowly as many times as they want!! i just hate tat term "cheat" becuz sum fans think skaters intensionally cheat, but u cant, cuz it's filmed n no skater wants to underotate a jump!!

  • I understand where you are coming from...

When I am watching a skater and a commentator says "That was cheated." or something along those lines, it does get kind of annoying because you know they aren't "purposefully" cheating. I would have to say her axel is prerotated, but I do agree that is a better word than cheated. I think the majority of the skating world uses "cheating", though :P

  • prerotated or underotated r terms i like!! becuz no skater would want to intensionally underotate a jump!! cuz they kno tat they would lose lots of points!!

  • Well i am friends with Kayla, I use 2 sk8 with her heaps.. She is funny and likes to mak eup new, exciting things all the time here. I quitted skating about 2 months ago but still keep in touch with her a bit. she truly did make up this sping herself with a bit of help from her mates andrew and that saying its good or needs work or just mucking around most of the time...i think she is a beautiful skater and if you see her skate all the time, not just judged on this vid, she is truly awesome!!

  • That double axel is so cheated! Anyway, beautiful spin, but not original...it's just a variation of the biellman. I guess what makes it unique is that she goes from catch foot where her feet is touching her head to the biellamn, as opposed to the biellman first then lowering her foot to her head.

  • i agree. no doubt shes beautiful and soo flexible but ive seen it be done. if this move is her own 100% then why dont the people who are uber flexible get rights to spins that they enhance?? .. its enhanced, and talented. but i think "original" is a little overzelous

  • First of all- This video was put up in August 2007 which means that she made up the spin way earlier than that. That explains the reason everyone is saying that there friends can do it.

And Secondly- Kayla lives in Australia, so this spin was probably made up in Australia. People here probably made it up before they did.

  • its a freakin biellman thats just in a lower position -.-

  • isn't that the "pearl" invented by caroline zhang? it's similar, i've seen her do it

  • no... pearl is different. the pearl is much more complicated than this:]

  • I'd actually have to disagree with many of you who believe that this isn't an original move. True it is A VARIATION ON A Biellman, but what makes this different from a it is that her blade is actually next to her chin. For it to be a true Biellman the leg has to be extended above the head with the arms extended upward. So this truly is an original! Beautiful position and beautiful skater for sure!

  • My mom skates, she can do that lol

    seriously

she grew up in s.korea and she like started skating as soon as she started walking

but yeah, I guess you iceskate?

  • Oh please she didn't invent this spin. It's a freaking beilman for god's sake.

  • that spin has been round for like ever she didnt invent it

  • it is a combination of the kayla catch and the biellman. the biellman is the second position she takes, but the fist part is hers

  • ohhh i get it now!!

I just thought it was a biellman :S

  • actually second sorry. It starts with a layback, then her spin and then biellman

  • HAHA KAYLA'S CATCH? IT'S A VARIATION OF A BIELLMAN! And what kind of a name is that? I wouldn't want to go around saying I CAN DO THE KAYLA CATCH! -.-

  • Carolyn Zhang has been doing this for years.

  • its not the same as her move the pearl.. but i like the pearl better:]

  • Not a lot of people can do the pearl... only Caroline Zhang and someone who's been flexible ever since they were little can do that haha.

  • it's a beillman spin end of!

  • I agree... it's been done before. My daughter's 9 year old best friend also does this spin.

  • good but she dident invent it. skaters in scotland (uk) use this spin as a variation of the belliemann all the time. (:

  • oh god, :D

  • no Im not I'm just annoyed that she would get recognized for inventing a spin when she didn't invent it

  • nice job but she didn't invent that, quite a few skaters in the U.S. have done that before its a variation of a biellman , or a sword spin

  • exactly, and ive seen caroline zhang do it aswell

  • Did Sasha really invent the Sasha spin too? (The one that always comes at the end of her combo spins at the end of her programs that's a variation of the "catch foot".)

And did Emily really invent the shoot-the-duck position? (Is it called that? I don't remember cuz shoot the duck is something else - it's the spin tat's an inverted sit spin where twists her body. (Watch her flying sit spin at the US Nationals or 2007 Worlds.)

  • Sasha didnt invent her own spin, she invented her own spiral

  • If you're talking about the "dog pissing" spiral position, Nicole Bobek did it before Sasha.

  • No, Sasha's spiral is the one when she holds the position, turns forward, and still holds the position w/out putting her foot down.

  • Ahhhhh yes, the dog-pissing to glide, I think you're right, I've never seen anyone else do it. I've only seen a regular spiral to glide.

  • She named that the Sasha Spiral when it had actually been done (and infinitely better than Sasha) by Robin Cousins - it is simply a slide spiral.

  • this is good funny comment.....ha ha....love it

  • The shoot-the-duck has been around for ages.

  • Wow. You must be REALLY flexible. Isn't that hard to do? How long did it take to learn that?

  • sorry but that is not invnted that is a variation from a biellmn spin

  • =/ sorry but I think Caroline Zhang does it slightly (more) better than Kayla

  • i thinkk thats more than sasha cohen can bend her back! better than how i can! shes good!

  • Sorry, but it's been done. That just a variation of a Biellmann spin...Caroline Zhang, Mirai Nagasu and Mao Asada also pull their blade close to their face before going into a Biellmann. It's nothing that hasn't been done. An "invented" spin was by Caroline Zhang and that's called "the pearl", where she does a Biellmann in a layback position...that had never been done before. But the Kayla Catch is just a form of a Biellmann. Nicely done, but nothing special.

  • haha totally agree!

just another way to make the levels in

    your spin higher, nothing more

  • Actually, the pearl spin was first done by a Swiss skater named Nathalie Krieg back in the early 90's. She was incredible too...every bit as good as Lucinda Ruh, maybe better according to some.

  • Actually, the pearl spin was first done by Nathalie Krieg back in the early 90's. She's Swiss, so you know she's gorgeous...every bit as good as Lucinda Ruh, maybe even better.

  • Actually, the pearl spin was performed before Caroline by Nathalie Krieg and Ji Eun Choi.

Just as the Biellman spin, which wasn't actually invented by Denise Biellman...Tamara Moskvina and Karen Iten performed it before her.

  • I know! That girl could spin for days! I guess Caroline just sorta improved it. Her flexibility is great than Krieg's or Choi's, thus it looks a lot prettier when she does it. Not to mention she named it. When you name something it kinda helps as far as putting your stamp on it...even if you didn't do it first. She just popularized it I guess.

  • if the spin your talking about that nathalie was doing in canada in '92 at the end then i think that isnt a pearl but i think it sould be called somthing else i would call it some sort of flower

  • @herm712

it turns out "the pearl" was not originally done by caroline. a korean skater choi ji eun used the same spin in a competition first. however, caroline's execution of the pearl is better than ji-eun's.

  • @herm712 the pearls a little bit different but yeah i think someone has done something like this

  • I think the "new" aspect of this is where she holds the skate close to her face!! Then she definitely goes into a Biellmann.

  • sorry to say this but this is a biellmann spin invented by dennise biellmann ages ago

but congrats to kayla for being able to do it =) its not easy!

  • Kayla has not had a coach for 18 months.

  • she has got her triple salcow

and she has nearly got her triple toe and loop jump.

i think shes doing pretty well consitering thatv she skates in a rink that is three times smaller then a normal size ice skating rink and she has no coach or anything.

  • heyy yea its the nutcracker music.

  • Unless I'm much mistaken, this is the Pas de Deux (Act II) of the Nutracker, just after the Waltz of the Flowers and just before the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy

  • how are her triple jumps can she do them yet. Would love to see an Aussie on the world seen

  • Do a search on youtube for:

    "Caroline Zhang JGPF Finale Spin!"

  • hehe I know Kayla shes in my class!!!!!!
