Its normal to see a go around in these conditions. Its also safe to a specific manufatures designation. For most jest it ranges from 25 to 30 knots crosswind at 45 degrees wind deflection.
The reason, normally, for a diversion after the 3rd attempt is due to fuel capacity or fuel remaning in hours. Most airlines dont carry full fuel load on flights. Its better to divert before you run any risk of fuel starvation. On the other hand if fuel is no factor then try as many times or even wait.
Normal procedure is that you have to deviate to your alternate when you go around twice like this airbus. it's strange how they tried it a third time.
@Mrmartinnico Roughly speaking windshear is a kind of local air jet wich could be horizontal or vertical. It's direction and speed differs a lot from the rest of surrounding air, so it's very dangerous to aviation. The relief and the surface characteristics (grass, water bodies) of the runway vicinity plays an important role in windshear.
....quick question - it might sound stupid though, so bear with me.
At what point does the pilot have to commit to land? I mean, he/she obviously aborted twice, but is there a point that no matter if they're not happy with the way things are going, they need to commit to the landing anyway? A line in the sand kinda situation that if they go below a certain height/speed/whatever, they then need to commit to the landing?
@Cassiefur At no point is a pilot completely committed to the landing on the approach. If, at any time, he/she feels that they cannot land the aircraft safely, they will execute a go-around.
However, if the aircraft can only make 1 more approach with the fuel remaining, the situation changes... they are completely committed.
Yeah I confirm, but usually, pilots prefere to divert after 2 go arounds. I'm working as flight attendant & it already happened twice to me. Once we performed 2 go arounds in Bornmouth before diverting to London Gatwick, & the 2nd time was a double go around in Geneva before diverting to Lyon....
It is always safer to go-around rather to try to land if the aircraft is not properly aligned for landing. The landing is an example of a correct cross-wind landing. Normal approach speed for this aircraft is about 130-140 knots (150-160 mph). The pilot may have added some extra speed (10 knots) for the gusty conditions.
The pilots made the best decision possible in this case. The incident at munich with the a320 does not want to happen again. If the pilot or the F/O is not happy a go around is the best option. Great video A*
I had a similar experience on landing in a B777 from Dubai in Oct 2006. It was the day trucks were being blown over on the M1 and wind gusting up to 80+ mph.
The captain warned us before landing that it was a little 'breezy' but blowing down the runway so it would help. All the way down from 5000ft the plane was being blown about all over the place. We had 2 go arounds and landed 3rd time. Captain said if it we didnt make it on the 3rd we'd have had to divert to Glasgow!
I was at the airport when this happened and I have to say the attitude of some of the spectators was shocking. The second attempt at landing and failing had them clapping and laughing and cheering. I think they forgot PEOPLE were on that plane probably very nervous by then if not frightened.
Well caught . Would have been spectacular if you had caught all the attempts.
Minimum requirement is fuel to destination + 3-5 % reserve + fuel to alternate airport + fuel equivalent for 30 minutes at holding speed. The captain may add extra fuel to cope with delays (holding) and weater conditions.
In the video is it difficult to see why the pilot did choose to go-around. But it is always safer to go-around rather to try to land if the aircraft is not properly aligned for landing.

If a plane aborts three times, they do go to another airport. At YBCG, I think the limit is two. So I guess it depends on fuel, weather, and the aviation laws in the country, not including ICAO laws.
Amazing footage. You must be very lucky to have captured so many aborted landings and go arounds on your travels. I would love to see an A330/A340 or even A380 do this at close quarters. Your 777 and 747 go around videos are truly wonderful.
@mghaz By lifting the landing gear the aerodynamics are improved. The plane took at least five minutes to return to the final approach after the abort. Most other planes, including Dash-8's landed successfully in between the Lufthansa aborts. I think the Lufthansa one was just unlucky getting caught in quite violent crosswinds on each approach.
@mghaz Full throttle, retract gear and flaps from 'langing' to 'take-off' position. Otherwise you will not be able to speed up to climb and go around.
Yeah the crosswind at MAN was quite nasty today. I've seen two aborted landings, one after the other - G-CELU at 13:54 and G-OZBT just two minutes later. Both of them managed to land after ~15 mins.

Is it normal to land at that speed during these kind of conditions, because it did look like it was going unusually fast.

What is windshear ????
Mrmartinnico 10 months ago
@Mrmartinnico it's a random force of wind that pushes the aircraft down. Somewhat like a stall, but with speed
