Quite astonishing performance - been a browser on youtube for a few years but this has inspired me to sign up and comment .Loved them at the time and still amazed to think that these guys were doing this so far from the so called epicentre of punk.Blows away anything around nowadays.
I do like the Clash but even at the time i rated bands like the Stranglers, the Damned, the Adverts along with about another dozen or so bands( including the Saints) more highly. Interesting mentioning the Clash having reggae influence as i always felt they suffered in the same way as the Wailers did in that they got so big they were always under scrutiny by the music media to the point that this pressure blanded-out their songwriting.
I`m sure the Clash did. Not too dif from the Saints, The Clash`s Sandinista was both experimental and influence driven. They both went commercial. IMO, Combat Rock was a POS! Sandanista was the Clash revealing themselves. The Clash had a heavy Ska & Reggae influence which divides the two. The Saints were closer to the NY dolls or Ramones as a band in likeness minus the blues.
Great clip! LOVED the first two Saints albums way back when they came out (was just a teen L.A. punk rocker then), and it's cool to see live footage of a band that never played the US in their prime. Thanks for posting this.
@nzoz1977 PLEASE DON'T EVER LOSE THIS FOOTAGE SAINTS ARE COOL ON RECORD BUT THIS LIVE STUFF IS TOTALLY SAC SHREDDING THE SOUND AND QUALITY ARE AWESOME I'D GIVE MY LEFT NUT TO HAVE BEEN AT THIS GIG
supposedly it's a PA head or even an entire PA system, not a guitar amp. we had a cabinet like that (a PA cabinet) in our practice garage winter-spring 1979 and it was insane (the distortion from the top "horn" speaker) until it either blew up, blew out, or disappeared into one of the guys' LA Recycler For Sale listings.or

back then he played through an EDA public address system that he turned up loud enough to distort, thats why he it looks like he isn't even touching the strings cos it he full on hit them it would blow the band's eardrums.

The Saints- real punk rock.....and they achieved what most of their competitors failed to do.....make a brilliant 2nd album!
The Clash could have learned a lot from them!
