i used dogs for an example because of all the dog attacks that have killed children and some adults... i dont think anyone would die from an Opossum attack...
*sigh* Just need to rant. A few months ago, I left a comment on some video of some guy with a "pet" opposum. Recently they replied back saying they were qualified and stuff. It upset me. I didn't bother replying and don't know if I will because it's not worth it. Oppossums ARE wild animals, I don't understand people thinking they can be pets.
@tungazzio Opossums don't make good pets because, among other things, they're often severely stressed by living in human dwellings. They also have highly specific dietary requirements that cannot be replicated in a home environment without a lot of dedication. If their hair turns cinnamon in color, that's not a color variant as some would have you think, but a sign of nutritional deficiency. There are cinnamon color variants, but they're born like that.
@PaperShishigami Opossums also have numerous pointy little teeth--they're some of the toothiest mammals around. They're not prone to bite unless threatened, I'd think, but I would really hate to be on the receiving end of those chompers if one was.
@Snoep76239 If I had to guess, it's mainly that their diets are highly varied. They can't eat pet food, for example. Most of their food is probably things like slugs, insects, some vegetable matter (don't quote me there), and who knows what else. But they can't have a limited diet by any means. Strange to see that they're so short lived, yet so specific in terms of diet, but that's how it is.
why is there an o at the beginning of possom? seriously what relavence does it have lol. I understand the importantance of silent letters but this is just ridiculous
Actually I have rehabilitated many opossums. I will say one became a great friend. He was potty trained in a cat box. It can be expensive to make sure they are fed correctly. And you need to find a vet who REALLY knows about them. They look and sound mean but this all for their protection. They are wonderful for your yard and LOVE snails and crickets. They eat like a pig. I had give 4 young ones to the LA Zoo, and they became too tame to release. Now they are helping to educate people.
@Snoep76239 Yep, I've heard that confirmed many places. No argument here. I was simply commenting on the video itself - it didn't contain much useful information for people who like hard facts. It was basically, "Just trust us; they're bad pets."
@JacoTheSkunk Your comment was on point, the video didn't answer the question, so I thought I would just in case you were still wondering why. (I raised 7 orphans and it was a LOT of work)

Expert Village is anything but expert when trying to educate in a video. Misleading facts and leaving out real facts. Possums as pets has its pros and cons. They make great pets because they're very docile and show lots of love and affection. And the cons are that they're a bit fragile in a sense. They get fat really easy and the wrong diet can make them sick real easy too. It's their critical diet and short life span of 2 to 3 years on average that discourage their popularity as house pets.
your stupid i had a opossum and he was blind and when we took him to the vets they said that he cant make it in the wild so we kept him the only problem with him was that he wouldnt use the little box i named him possie and he was a perfect pet and he died about a month ago due to a ruptured artery and you DO NOT NEED A PERMIT FOR AN AMERICAN VERGINA OPOSSUM THEY ARE NOT ILLEGAL YOU RETARD GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT AND SO THIS WILL MAKE YOU LOOK STUPID IM 14 AND I JUST PROOVED YOU STUPID
I've seen them kept as pets and some can even use a litter pan, but they are still wild animals (undomesticated), and only people that are willing to put a lot of time and effort into keeping one should consider it. They are usually gentle but they have the teeth to back things up if frightened or angry. I like them and I'm content to give one the left over cat food on my porch, nice to see it and watch it eat and waddle off, but won't try to make a pet out of it or try to pet it.

Just FYI to all of you this is an Opossum, possums are only native to Australia, and the surrounding islands. Also, possums are way cuter than our North American friend, the Opossum.
Incorrect. Cats and dogs aren't good pets for some people, no matter their popularity. It all depends on the owners, the conditions they have to keep that pet, where they are located, long-term care, if they have kids, if they travel a lot, etc. And finally, it depends on the owner's taste, no way they are going to take care of a pet if they don't like it. How many people do you know that own Opossums around the world? Not so many.
Again you cannot make an opinion based only in yours. Opossums aren't very common pets.
And if you read my comment before, I said good pets depend largely on their owners. Why the hell are you telling me to shut up? Last time I checked I had freedom of speech and I dind't insulted anyone.
And you got that based on what? If you don't have a smart comment to say, the only one looking dumb here is you. Have a nice day, troll. Btw, don't bother answering back because I'll simply ignore you.
@Lakena2552 See I've done my homework! Cause we have possums here and one of my former neighbor would get upset that I would feed it! And told the landlord that there carrier of rabies! And I kept on saying no! Then My boyfriend looked it up and we read up on the possums and what they like to eat!! Well we don't have snails in are area (?) But I just give them what ever is left over from dinner!! Or some dry tasty cereal!! And fruit! I just like to see them dead on the road!!
@possum1011 No baby posseums around you? Dang I'm sorry! I know your little one must have ment a lot to you! Do you take these little guys to the vet? Do they get fixed like a cat?
Most people like in this video will tell you NO wild animal is a good pet ,aka misinformation. I had a pet coon for 6 years ( found him as a baby ) and never had a problem.
Seriously if you want a pet marsupial, get an Australian one, such as a brushtail possum or ringtail possum. They're tamer, cuter and more attractive than then these giant rats. And being herbivores, they won't eat cats, dogs or chickens. Brushtails are pests in New Zealand, so if you source one from there you're probably saving it from extermination.
@raezer Its probably because they're illegal to keep in the USA (at least, thats what I've been told) Whereas here in the UK, they're perfectly legal, and some people have them as pets. Im getting one next year. They make FANTASTIC pets. Certainly better than snakes or lizards, which people don't seem to have any issue with people keeping! Obviously I wouldn't advocate keeping a WILD one in captivity, but the captive bred ones here are docile, friendly, clean, and make great pets.
@xjthg187187x You obviously have a severe anger problem. You are also in dire need of spelling lessons and basic English skills. I've never heard of a cat "protecting" a house, either. Must be some cat. Odd, I have 3 female barn cats that keep opossums and rodents out of my horse feed. Guess they are tougher than yours. You actually WITNESSED a opossum killing your chickens and cat? Why didn't you do anything about it? Just stood there and watched, huh? That's witnessing, all right.
@plushpossum chickens get killed and that's exactly where that opossum took his last step and ate his last meal, can't save them all , and who are you to say that I have an anger problem? Just because I hate these disgusting creatures doesn't mean I hate the world or my life. You should really consider your stupidity before opening statements like that, :) retard
@Oreztar I can answer that by easily telling you that some people like to eat fish and some don't, some people are gay and some aren't, it's a matter of opinion and the way you see it, idk what type of a person you are ( i doubt you yourself have made a nuclear bomb) but not all humans are destructive or filthy ( I take showers) so I suggest you stop using examples that aren't even related to you personally in anyway, you're not Hitler, Einstein or Bin Laden, I'm sure you can sleep at night :)
@pollyboo420 it's a metaphorical joke don't take it literal and u shoul've let it go to die on its on (sorry i just really hate these animals for my own reasons) but that's the way I am :)
I have a "pet" opossum- of sorts. He is a itty bitty little thing that lives under my garden shed and roams around the yard at night. Every now and then I go catch him and feed him a treat. He'll sit on my lap for an hour or so, eating yogurt and bananas or peaches. Then he'll sit for a little while. I let him out after he gets squirmy. For the most part he fends for himself and really is a wild opossum. But he makes a good pet in his own way. I wouldn't keep one caged up inside though.
Opossums, just like many other animals, simply do not enjoy being pets or used as accessories. They've got every right to live out their lives as they are supposed to. People just don't like to think about animal rights. They just want what they want. It's maddening to see so many comments where people think they are entitled to owning animals (especially wild ones).
The title of this video is 'Facts About Opossums'. But she didn't give any facts at all. She didn't explain why they don't make good pets. Totally useless. And from all the videos I've seen on youtube it doesn't seem to be true.
I actually rescued a possum as a child, raised it to what I believed to be a year old and then....let's just say the possum chewed me up when I went to get it out of it's cage. Am I mad at the possum? Heck no. It should never have been kept as a pet in the first place. The last time I saw it, it was hightailing it back to the woods where I found it and I wore long sleeves to hide the bites from my mother. I just knew if she saw them I'd be getting rabies shots in the stomach!!!
She doesn't say why they don't make good pets... and animals like these make good pets for some people, you just gotta do your homework and know what you are getting into.
I had one for years and by my standards it was a good pet. Even when terrified he never lashed out or bit, he was loyal and loved my company but touch...like the way you'd touch cats or dogs was too much for him. Their whole hairy body senses movement around them in order to detect danger so I had to respect his cues. Once you understand their behaviours and strategise your furniture and curtains accordingly...it is a piece of cake. My old boy was even trained to to use the puppy pads.
Funny how she says all in one breath"these animals are wonderful but they dont make very good pets" as she says this, the possom is crawling around her. Whats the matter with this picture? I raised a baby raccoon and it made a wonderful pet,I dont see why a possom cant make a good pet as well
Why are they not good pets?? I have seen several videos on YT that appear otherwise. Expert Village you really need to be more detailed in your videos. I can watch a 15 minute makeup tutorial but all your videos are short and leave out all the DETAILS.
hello I hope you read this hello i want to become a naturalist but i live in mexico and in mexico we don´t have that career do i have a chance of studying in us because i really love that career, and i have another problem i don´t have a lot of money but i have perfect averages in school do i have a chance of getting a scholar ship?
PD I love opossums too!!! i have 2 videos about opossums would you like to see them?
"Learn facts about how to keep opossums as pets and information on how to care for possums in this free online instructional video."
In responce, all you said was they don't make good pets. Except is it that you don't like them or what? There are people who do so you can't speak on behalf of them. :-/
They do make ok pets but you have to be careful when you pick them up, they like all their feet touching something or they will grab ahold of whatever they can with there 50 teeth.
Wild possums belong in the wild and belong to all of us. It is a selfish individual who wishes to take them from the wild to cage and treat as pets. If everyone that admires possums took them from the wild to keep as pets eventually there would be no wild ones left and there would be a massive rodent infestation spreading disease and famine. Possums eat rodents and are very beneficial to the environment.
@MrJdpossum Dude , what's your issue? Where the h*ll do you think domestic dogs came from? WILD WOLVES! Just because you take a few animals from the wild , it doesn't mean they're gonna be extinct. If people selected a good chosen bunch a long time ago , bred them , and did research on them for the right diet and care , then made them available to sell as pets with all the proper formulas and specially made foods for possums you can buy in any store like for other animals , there'd be no problem
@apossumsbestfriend I have no issue. What's your's? I have no problems with captive bred possums as pets. Taking a wild possum as a pet unless it's an injured non-releaseable is wrong! Period.
@MrJdpossum I think the reason why people do take possums from the wild is because they simply can't find a breeder. It would be nice if they could. But it ain't like you can take a magic wand and make it all stop every bit as much as you can't stop people from pirating music. That's why they call it " the real world " , and not " perfect world " unfortunately. I guess it ends when the world ends. You'd think there would be an easier way to find a breeder with the Internet. But are they legit?
I like how they just said "NO they don't make good pets" but had no facts on why. Lol. They make great pets if you get them young. They're just like gerbils but creepy looking.
thats a biggun, its a shame i cant have one being in suburbia, maybe ill move to a farm one day and have an entire collection of rare creatures and bathe with them and go on journeys into the wild and have tea while playing backgammon but i think opossum prefers majong.
I've read that a wild opossum kept domestic can have many nutrition issues that lead to severe neurological problems and other gastrointestinal problems. Best to get an STO (short tailed opossum) which is a domesticated animal, and take the wild possum to the rehabilitator.
If imprinted on humans from birth, opossums make excellent pets. Just a little effort on feeding and caring for it is all that is required. Seriously, dogs are more work.
Opossums are the only marsupial indigenous to North America. They are also unable to get or transmit rabies.
Thanksgiving night 2007 my cat went outside( shes an out door cat) and the next day she didn't come back, so I was worried that she may have been in trouble since I live next to a fucking canyon. I searched for less than an hour, in the canyon then I heard a cat screaming at the top of it's lungs. I run over to a shrub where I find 3 fucking possums attacking her. Now you may ask why didn't I do something?
If your cat was eaten by a family of opossums, it was already dead. Shame on you for not taking care if your cat!!!! And trying to blame an innocent opossum! Do your "fucking" homework!

you do have to have a permit to keep pet possums as your house pet.

the make good pets dumb bitch!!! expert my ass!!
P4brains 1 year ago
@P4brains

@Pestinha92 Dude, i have 3 opossums. They make good pets. but as any animal you have to have the schedule to accommodate them. stfu

@P4brains
Again you cannot make an opinion based only in yours. Opossums aren't very common pets.
And if you read my comment before, I said good pets depend largely on their owners. Why the hell are you telling me to shut up? Last time I checked I had freedom of speech and I dind't insulted anyone.

Rats are rodents and chew on things. Opossums are not rodents even though their tails may look like a rat tail. It is used for balance.

@45JTC Rats are rodents who gnaw on things, opossums are not rodents and do not gnaw on things.
xblackstock 1 year ago
Seriously if you want a pet marsupial, get an Australian one, such as a brushtail possum or ringtail possum. They're tamer, cuter and more attractive than then these giant rats. And being herbivores, they won't eat cats, dogs or chickens. Brushtails are pests in New Zealand, so if you source one from there you're probably saving it from extermination.
MrGutley 1 year ago
@raezer Its probably because they're illegal to keep in the USA (at least, thats what I've been told) Whereas here in the UK, they're perfectly legal, and some people have them as pets. Im getting one next year. They make FANTASTIC pets. Certainly better than snakes or lizards, which people don't seem to have any issue with people keeping! Obviously I wouldn't advocate keeping a WILD one in captivity, but the captive bred ones here are docile, friendly, clean, and make great pets.
Oreztar 1 year ago
@xjthg187187x You obviously have a severe anger problem. You are also in dire need of spelling lessons and basic English skills. I've never heard of a cat "protecting" a house, either. Must be some cat. Odd, I have 3 female barn cats that keep opossums and rodents out of my horse feed. Guess they are tougher than yours. You actually WITNESSED a opossum killing your chickens and cat? Why didn't you do anything about it? Just stood there and watched, huh? That's witnessing, all right.
plushpossum 1 year ago
@plushpossum chickens get killed and that's exactly where that opossum took his last step and ate his last meal, can't save them all , and who are you to say that I have an anger problem? Just because I hate these disgusting creatures doesn't mean I hate the world or my life. You should really consider your stupidity before opening statements like that, :) retard
xjthg187187x 1 year ago
@xjthg187187x How are they disgusting? How are they any more disgusting than the human species, the most destructive, filthy animal on the planet?
Oreztar 1 year ago
@Oreztar I can answer that by easily telling you that some people like to eat fish and some don't, some people are gay and some aren't, it's a matter of opinion and the way you see it, idk what type of a person you are ( i doubt you yourself have made a nuclear bomb) but not all humans are destructive or filthy ( I take showers) so I suggest you stop using examples that aren't even related to you personally in anyway, you're not Hitler, Einstein or Bin Laden, I'm sure you can sleep at night :)

Carmenellie 1 year ago
@pollyboo420 lol well then why even have it as a pet, sounds like all you can do is have it like a trophy lol
kingX777 1 year ago
Opossums, just like many other animals, simply do not enjoy being pets or used as accessories. They've got every right to live out their lives as they are supposed to. People just don't like to think about animal rights. They just want what they want. It's maddening to see so many comments where people think they are entitled to owning animals (especially wild ones).
emidore 1 year ago

@bittersweetapathy That's cool as long as they are free to come and go at will and fed proper diet while they stay.
MrJdpossum 1 year ago
@WiiHardcore you have no right to own a wild possum! If possums wanted to be pets then they'd be knocking on your door.
MrJdpossum 1 year ago
Wild possums belong in the wild and belong to all of us. It is a selfish individual who wishes to take them from the wild to cage and treat as pets. If everyone that admires possums took them from the wild to keep as pets eventually there would be no wild ones left and there would be a massive rodent infestation spreading disease and famine. Possums eat rodents and are very beneficial to the environment.
MrJdpossum 1 year ago
@MrJdpossum Dude , what's your issue? Where the h*ll do you think domestic dogs came from? WILD WOLVES! Just because you take a few animals from the wild , it doesn't mean they're gonna be extinct. If people selected a good chosen bunch a long time ago , bred them , and did research on them for the right diet and care , then made them available to sell as pets with all the proper formulas and specially made foods for possums you can buy in any store like for other animals , there'd be no problem
apossumsbestfriend 1 year ago
@apossumsbestfriend I have no issue. What's your's? I have no problems with captive bred possums as pets. Taking a wild possum as a pet unless it's an injured non-releaseable is wrong! Period.
MrJdpossum 1 year ago
@MrJdpossum I think the reason why people do take possums from the wild is because they simply can't find a breeder. It would be nice if they could. But it ain't like you can take a magic wand and make it all stop every bit as much as you can't stop people from pirating music. That's why they call it " the real world " , and not " perfect world " unfortunately. I guess it ends when the world ends. You'd think there would be an easier way to find a breeder with the Internet. But are they legit?
apossumsbestfriend 1 year ago
I like how they just said "NO they don't make good pets" but had no facts on why. Lol. They make great pets if you get them young. They're just like gerbils but creepy looking.

thats a biggun, its a shame i cant have one being in suburbia, maybe ill move to a farm one day and have an entire collection of rare creatures and bathe with them and go on journeys into the wild and have tea while playing backgammon but i think opossum prefers majong.
CityHunter84 2 years ago
I've read that a wild opossum kept domestic can have many nutrition issues that lead to severe neurological problems and other gastrointestinal problems. Best to get an STO (short tailed opossum) which is a domesticated animal, and take the wild possum to the rehabilitator.

Misleading video.
If imprinted on humans from birth, opossums make excellent pets. Just a little effort on feeding and caring for it is all that is required. Seriously, dogs are more work.
Opossums are the only marsupial indigenous to North America. They are also unable to get or transmit rabies.
ForcedToSignUp 2 years ago
@ForcedToSignUp just an FYI -- a sick opossum can get rabies. Most don't but it is possible so err on the side of caution.
