To be honest, if you are going to try and kick out a widely successful government that has provided low unemployment and low interest rates in a growing economy, then you need to take situations and manipulate and magnify them. Interest rates are a function of international rates and the budget deficit/surplus. The first factor is outside our control. In this election the Liberal had a worse projected budget balance with its tax cuts so would have been a worse policy for interest rates. Both major parties had silly misleading tv ads. From what I recall labour was in late 80's - rates were 15-16%... Rates would have gone up another 1 - 2 points with costello.... But now we are gone... They are going to give hand outs left right and centre and run the country straight back into debt... We had it so good man, I just cant understand why everything was good and yet everyone wants a change in government....

This is a claim based on your own personal anti-ALP opinion and not based on any evidence. in case you forgot, interest rates and unemployment were already on the rise in the last days of the howard era, the Rudd government has inherited a $570 billion foreign debt bill, trade deficit of $3 billion (the worst since 1971) and exports were down 3%. How dare you blame the failures of the last government on Rudd, pull the other one.

Interest rates are a function of international rates and the budget deficit/surplus. The first factor is outside our control. In this election the Liberal had a worse projected budget balance with its tax cuts so would have been a worse policy for interest rates. Both major parties had silly misleading tv ads. Broadband was the best thing out of the campaign. AN, why would you want a socially conservative country? It's unAustralian. JH would make you cut your hair off your collar.

I never did hear your answer to that minerals boom, do you know how profitable a company like for example, BHP have became. I think it's a shame Howard is taking the credit for a great economy when people aren't taking into account global economies and the way in which a high economic period is often followed by a lull, i believe that if labor run the economy over the past 10 years we would have seen a VERY SIMILAR result to the budget surplus we have now.

you really are a stupid hack...when Howard took office and when Keating left is the only time you can compare...when Howard came in interest rates were 7%, inflation low and steady, today they're 6.75%, in 11 years the rates have only fallen .25%.
Then again nobody knows whether your comparing nominal or real rates..because when the 17% rate was floating around the real rate was only 9%.
but hey...Mr 22% Howard couldn't even get a bank to loan you money at 13.50%.

hahaha...just as I thought, a novice! check the stats on the amount of income being used to service the mortgage each month now compared to late 80's/early 90's.
I don't have a mortgage now because I paid it off in 1994...had one for 10 years and it was a hell of a lot easier than what it would be today.
