I've operated 4 different 988 loaders, and none will handle 50 tons. With a bucket they handle 20 tons (barely) and you must figure the bucket itself at 7-10 tons.
@ferbsnissan I have also operated many loaders, in a block quarry in Norway. Cat/Komatsu/Volvo all deliver special Block Handlers. They have heavy duty axles/wheels, LOTS of counterweights, liquid filled wheels, shortened lifting arms and higher hydraulic working pressure. One machines i drove for years had 6 t. extra counterweight. Biggest block i loaded on to a flatbead truck was 43 tons. Closer to ground we could carry around 50 tons with wa600`s and 988. Imagine what we did with the 992.....
@troll999999999 I'll give ya that, there are special packages available, but this loader does not appear to have any extra counterweight. It must have higher pressure though, so I guess I'd put that block at no more than 35 tons.
Cats are the best loaders out there we have and old 980 b and a 980 c at work. You can beat them.I see alot of japs on low boys with the arms snapped right off.
Theres way enough hydraulic power to lift anything, but the loader is suppose to not be enough heavy, you couldn't lift the block higher than this.I dosen't know why people talk about hydraulic power because its caterpillar, not japanese shits.
drive one daily and it starts to struggle with about a 23 ton lift , but can still just get it in the truck. But the old girl will carry shit loads close to the ground. We also tow large steel skulls on a sledge at a steel mill with a 980 pushing up to the 80 tonne mark. And for the doubters those a weighted under large gantry cranes.
lol, thaat is bullshit, there is know way that 988 can litf 50 tons, or move it.....i work at a quarry, and it can lift something like 7-8 tons.....tops....so get over yourself...
@1973RoadRunner440 the b weighs in at 115,000 pounds and the rated capacity for a b was 25 tons.but if you notice the granite was barely off the ground and his rear end was off the ground most of the time.and notice how squashed the front tires were? you need to reread what aliveandkicking2009 said.i work at quarries all the time and see them do this all the time.its not impossible.but it would be with anything but a cat
@robby844 So if it really is 50 tons, then that would be 2 times the lifting capacity. The bucket cylinders shouldn't even be able to roll the forks back. The tires were on the ground quite a bit and if it really weighed 50 tons, about the same weight of the loader itself, the back tires wouldn't be touching the ground at all in the movie. There isn't enough hydraulic power or counter weight to do that.
@1973RoadRunner440 ive seen 988's lift well over 40 tons.like i said i am called to quarries all the time and they lift everything with these things.they dont care if its over weight or not.if it wont lift it then they throw it out.the quarry i went to got rid of all their CAT loaders and brought japatsu's in and they couldnt even lift a bucket of granite 5 feet off the ground.and that was supposed to be japatsus next one up.its a sad world.the limits on CATs are set way below what they can
@1973RoadRunner440 handle.the 988 b was made to handle a 18-20 cubic yard rock bucket.the one quarry (vulcan) has 6 988's working 24 hours a day 360 days a year.the one quarry i go to at deals with granite only.they have a chart that says most of the granite they mine is 175 pounds a cubic foot.so thats a 1 foot by 1 foot by 1 foot by 1 foot square
@NickLarsen20 i hate to burst your tiny lying bubble but the lifting cap on a 988B was 25 tons. the 988H is a mere 15 tons. better than the equal komatsu of only 7-8 tons. :D
The 988b is 4.11M high, so the block is about 3.25m high. The B's width over the tires is 3.5M the block is about 3.5m wide. The length as carried is about 1.6m. A cubic metre of granite is about 2.7Ton at 2.7g per cm3 which equals 49 tons of granite.
So 50 is possible depending on just how big that rectangle of granite is?
There is no way that those blocks weigh 75t. That loader has not got a big enough counter weight on the back to support that much weight. The tines on the front are not big enough to pick up that sort of weight either and the machine is not even labouring. Those blocks look around 30 tonne judging by the way the back end is lifted up. That loader must be on steriods then and generationll on drugs...

Block handling forks. There forks , for what ever. But mostly pipe. Drill pipe , casing , est. any thing you can get em under.
The max capacity for the 988 is , I believe it to be 30 ton, so it might just be 50 ton block. That would count for having to drag it , or pull it.

Why is there so much gravel on the quarry? How can a buyer see that the finished block is free of defects when you have rolled it up in dirt.

@NickLarsen20 notice how squashed the tires are? notice how that back keeps bouncing up.maybe you should do some research before you comment.

@robby844 The lifting capacity of a 988B is 46,000 lbs. Last time I checked that doesn't equal out to 50 tons
1973RoadRunner440 1 year ago
@robby844 In fact, a Cat 988B barely even weighs 50 tons itself.
