  • Announcer: That was a public information film

me: no duh genius nah nah this is a commercial about fire being fun and that parents are too stupid to watch their kids then going to a drunk party. :P

  • between the road acidents fire and child neglect i am amazed mankind didnt die out in the 1970s

  • Or Santa will rip your arms off.right?

  • tell that to the McCallisters.

  • @moksheebs don't you mean the mccanns?

  • @disjoinedchip2 He could just mean the McCallisters... a reference to Home Alone

  • What kind of idiot would leave their children alone in the house anyway.

  • @flyersphan65 mr and mrs mccann.

  • Propaganda piece of shit. This is fuckin serious, how could they ever dare to broadcast this?!

  • Propaganda? It's not like they shouted 'HITLER DID THIS! GO AND BOP A NAZI ON THE HEAD RIGHT NAO'

  • And its not like i said that either, or was it?

    Anyway this is awesome

  • Erm, yes, you did call it propaganda. You called it a 'propaganda piece of sh*t'. Or are you schizophrenic?

  • "Oh that's where I left those kids...."

There is another sad one with home alone Brit kids lighting a heater that causes a fire and "Mum" isn't anywhere to be seen!

This Christmas, try a little family togetherness and "Mum" maybe you have had enough sherry now? Father Crimbo doesn't visit the graveyard. Shoot, I should write sacry PSAs!

  • Oof! Right in the guts. Daddy's on his way back, little ones!

  • Theses ads from the 1960's through the 1970's were fucking scary

  • they certainly were

  • Yeah, same here! Watching one was bad enough, let alone the whole series. The one that caused me a bit of trauma was the first 'Never Ever Drink and Drive' with the little boy in the garden playing football and that car colliding and crushing him. And the father rushing out to hold him. I went home and cried. I was 10 at the time. I can still remember that ad

Apparently, you can watch them on Youtube, but you have to be 18 to see them, even though some were probably shown on daytime television

  • Yes, completely agree. Have you seen the Northern Ireland Road Safety ads?

  • Not without flinching.

  • How come are all the best PIFS come from the 1960's - 1980's? I mean, the road safety ads by Think are good, but I think that the ignorance by some people that might be down to censorship here in the U.K...I don't know. Though I have seen the Road Safety Ads from Northern Ireland(nothing to do with fires, I know) that AXA sponsered(petrifying enough seeing one, let alone the whole series!) Maybe 'P.I.F' wise, we should take a page out of their book? Anyone else seen them?

  • Some of the 90s ones are good, but absolutely everything on earth is "demographically targeted" these days, aiming at an imaginary group of people and therefore effective for no-one. (cf "Moment of Doubt".) Combine that with a resurgence of hand-wringing squeamishness and you see why PIFs in the oughties have tended toward the bland. As we head into the teens, though, there are signs that they're toughening up again.

  • Screaming mother of Cthulhu, what kind of sadists do you limeys have writing public service announcements? I am genuinely afraid to fall asleep now. I'm gonna have to watch "Hostel" just to keep the nightmares away. And they ran this thing at CHRISTMAS?! That is hard core. I grew up watching a leaf fall in slow motion to explain SIDS. I am not prepared for this.

  • I love this comment. We're British, dammit, we don't mess around.

  • wud defo never leave my kids alone. not for a minute!!

  • terrifying!!! poor Steven :( haha.

  • What is it about a public information film that makes it so scary?

  • FIRE!!!

Leaving your tots alone can cost you sterling pounds worth of fines!

  • Hahah!

  • That "That was a public information film" part at the end creeps the hell out of me! :-(

  • Glad I'm not the only one. Still don't understand why, though.

  • Ditto!

  • Nightmares guaranteed.

    What would Charlie say?

  • This one never disturbed me, for some reason. Probably because every time I hear the name 'Steven' now, I think of the bear from Bo'Selecta shouting "YOU GINGER BASTARD!" No, but seriously, it's not as gruesome as it could be, is it? Demerit points for not including a gratuitous shot of a partially melted child's doll.

  • Last christmas I hung myself from the lightbulb with the elastic from my knickers but I only suceeded in giving myself concusion? booooiiinnggg!

  • ¿it´s english?

  • I don't know much Spanish, but the endline in French is "n'abandonnez jamais vos enfants", roughly. If that's any use.

  • Dice que no se debe dejar los niños solos en casa. La chica está diciendo que su hermanito murió porque había un fuego mientras los padres no estaban.

(me temo que mi español es muy limitado)

  • Jesus Christ, I'm surprised they just didn't go the whole hog and have the slogan "I hope you asked Father Christmas" for a gas mask".

Again, great upload - you're the unsung hero of YouTube, you are, Applemask. :)

  • Applemask: You are a genius mate. I've been looking for this one, cheers! Totally agree with you about the wee girl is thinking. She must be freaked, I would be left all my own (if I was her age of course). This is another scary PIF but did it work? Anyone know?

  • "Did it work?" Technically, if parents taking action as a result of this film saved one child's life, then it worked.

  • Taken, I assume, from its showing at closedown on BBC1 on Tuesday 21st December 1982 - at any rate, Peter Bolgar can be heard at the end, and he was the announcer that night.

  • Correct. You win a million pounds.

  • also, is that supposed to be the young girl sleeping at the end or is she.....um...dead?

  • I think she's supposed to be sleeping, or trying to, but there is an implication in her thoughts that it's her turn this year.

  • Er ... shouldn't she have been taken into care as a result of her parents' gross neglect? I hope the staff at the Bideawee Kiddies' Home won't all be out on Christmas Eve.

  • Oh god why do I find some kind of sick pleasure in watching stuff like this
