A truly mystical opening unparalleled by any childhood movie ever. Truly the supreme fanatasy movie ever from the decade that was the pinnacle of cinema and musical brilliance. Originality for the most part went out the door when the 80's ended. Thank goodness I was a kid then to enjoy it!!
As a child, I always had a unique place in my heart for this story. I never understood why it gave me such a sense of wonder, until as I was an adult. I then realized why it gave me that sense of wonder. First of all, as observers, we collapse the probability of matter from waves into objective experience, our mental stories produce reality. Second, 100 billion galaxies or more in the universe, you can bet nearly everything is real somewhere and in some time. Our Cosmos seems to be neverending!
Second movie was decent and fun to watch every once and a while.
The third movie however is...well...no...just no. Atreyu isn't even in the third movie, they barley spend any time in Fantasia, and they messed up Falcor and the Rock Bitter.
However the first is still my all time favourite ^^ i'm 16 and I STILL watch this movie alot. <3
The soundtrack to a movie is everything, or at least on par with the plot and theme. It can really help to set the mood, tone, emotion, whatever... of the movie. To many movies today seem to lack the supportive structure of a good soundtrack. Whether it be orchestral (Williams / Goldsmith) or done mostly on a synth (Moroder / Carpenter) It would be nice to get back to this style of composition. My 2¢.
@cranfield1 That was actually to imply, with this song, that sing it faded in and faded out, that it was also a "neverending song" so-to-speak. "This is the song that never ends, for it goes on and on my friend..." lol
I can't believe they are trying to remake this movie. They screwed up predators, willy wonka + the choc factory, karate kid, a-team. They should leave this one in peace.
A remake would seriously stink, they should add a new chapter or something, and have Wolfgang Petersen write and direct again. I really didn't enjoy the remake of Willy Wonka by Tim Burton. Burton is so much more creative than that. I hope a similar thing doesn't happen to this movie.
@LemonheadFr Ils ont été fait dans une sorte d'aquarium, je crois. Ils ont versé du colorant liquide blanc dans des couleurs rouge, ocre, et ont filmé ça au ralenti ! :) J'ai vu ça quelque part...
The German intro is so not better. The American Intro is the best by far. It's a beautiful, articulate opening and it really sets the tone for the Movie, it's just the better intro.
I'd really like to be an actress in the next making of 'The Neverending Story' movie.
My other prayer is that when the next chapters are made, that they are made in the likes of the first movie. That the producers and directors put the same effort, even if they have to use the same puppets, cameras, whatever special effects they used back then.
Plz, at least hear my prayer, then If it's 'right' and your allright with it, may it be done according to your will-not myne!
You've seen the sequels didn't you? I agree, they're very bad. Hell, check out The Nostalgia Critic's on Neverending Story II. I'm very sure you'll agree with what he has to say.
@leeboyoellis I was only askin God's help my dream come true,if that was possible and perhaps he does exist?
There is this book called 'Embraced by the Light' and it totally reminds me of this movie! It says that we've always existed, that there is no death(kind of like 'The Neverending Story) and that there are many other worlds.
Also, i wasn't talkin about changing the movie into some religious ceremony, i was simply asking God's help to be a part of it.
I'd like to see Wolfgang Petersen do more movies based off fantasy books like this one. Afterall, this was a book before it was a movie. Just like The Wizard of Oz, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Narnia, and many other fantasy books.
Both versions have their place. The German one is more mysterious, but honestly a bit heavy for their target audience. So, each to their own. Enjoy both.
I remember being about 8 or 9 years old when the movie came out... when the opening appeared on the screen, the clouds and the song fairly took my breath away! Thanks for posting :)
what every one is forgetting is that in those times these movies looking kick ass. the fact that people these days dont even have a chance to think up a story like this one, or even something close to being as captivative, should say something
and the lack of CGI and better visual effects is something i personaly like about these things same with Dark Crystal
people who constantly diss on this movie are deluded. classic movies are treasured because they will never be topped no matter how sophisticated CGI gets. this movie means a lot to me because it reminds me of better days :-)
@sanitariumcalls Plus the atmosphere and special effects of 80s movies put together are pretty much just perfect.
Compare Blade Runner or the original Star Wars trilogy today to modern Sci-Fi. IMO the Muppet/Costume aliens were a million times better, and blade runners designed sets seemed more real than anything you saw on any modern movie of that type.
@sanitariumcalls yea wow I used to watch this so so many times when I was young & then I watched it not to long ago & it occurred to me what the movie really means where as when I was young I never saw the point of the movie. And that is that if you don't have an idea what's to be in yer future, if you never dream anything up, if you lay back and let the current of life just wash over you then the nothing will get you. It happened to my brother, it reminds me of The Langaloers
AWESOME observation! I feel exactly the SAME! It's really nightmareish, and it surpasses ALL CG I've seen to date. Harry Potter does a good job a lot of the times though! But I LOVE 80's fantasy! It could be the dolls and the dreamlike feeling yes! Life force!
I absolutely hate this movie because it scares me! This song is the only good part about the movie. The wolf G'mork scares the crap out of me more than anything.
How is it scary? I mean you are right in some ways, like when Atreyu battles that wolf thing around the ending. But, no offense, it has a gloomy atmosphere and is more serious than the other NE movies, but it's still good. You should think about the plot.
This version sounds fine to me this is what I grew up with. It's my Neverending tune. Conversely, I've always been glad that Tangerine Dream stepped in and did the soundtrack for "Legend" and Jerry Goldsmith's soundtrack scores took second place to TD's. Great film is "The Neverending Story" with many solid scores a true 80's masterpiece no matter what way you want to see it. Legendary then and now and it should have not had any sequels nonetheless.
lol...ever notice when something is released both in Europe and the US...the US version is always the "inferior" one. Caste system fantasy films...oh what will they think of next?
It's not like they didn't have a choice not to alter the original version (which was made in english), and just release it, but they went the extra mile to alter the "darker" opening, and making some cuts in the movie, sorry for that but this stupidity makes this version the inferior one.
I mean, you can't just change art because it isn't like you want it to be. You also don't go to the museum and change paintings because you don't like them the way they are.
The movie, the music, the plot, the year it came out, and the fact that I was a little kid when I saw it lives on in my memory. I've seen the movie so many times. It is unparalleled to any childhood movie truly above all films.
I love love LOVE this movie, this song, everything! it's my favourite ever! Though I think it's sad that the writer of this story, Michael Ende, wasn't happy with the final product of the movie. The book is so much better, they should have, at least, left his name on the movie.
"Based on the original novel 'Die unendlich Gesclish' by Michael Ende"
It was Ende himself who didn't want his name in the credits of the movie. He found the special effects and characters like the ones you see in night clubs (that's what he said in the making of this wonderful movie). Too bad...
I know, he must have been very disappointed at the making of the movie. Even though the book is so much better, the movie is also superb (except for that part of falkor helping Bastian scare those bullies at the end, which has no sense whatsowever according to what was told to Atreyu) and memorable. Damn...
Hey, do you know if any other Michael Ende book has been made into a mivoe? I think "Momo" has a movie or mini-serie but I'm not sure. Thanks!
Yeah, if you look at his reaction on youtube (type Michael Ende + neverending story) you can see he is 'not amused' with the movie. He refers to the Ivory Tower and calls it a TV Antenna...aarghhh! ;-)
I don't know if any other books from him were made into a movie. Maybe you can look it up on google?
Does anyone else remember the original VHS issues of this having a rather muddy soundtrack while the theme was playing? I always thought it was supposed to sound 'warped' because my copy and my friend's copy both sounded like that.
I like this opening better then the other one I saw in another vid. with this opening, it just gose better and gose along with the movie, and the fantacy.
IIRC, Terry Gilliam used stock footage of clouds from this movie for the opening of his film "Brazil." It also opened and ended with cloud formations. It also had dream sequences with cloud formations, but all of those were made on a miniature set.
This music is the first music I remembered in English (I'm a Japanese in pure Japanese family so at that time I was too young to see the lyrics.) I found it very beautiful instinctively and now after nearly 20 years I found the lyrics very beautiful! Thank you for uploading. The only regrettable is the last part... You should have uploaded the fading sound.
lol - OK, but I had this image that flashed through my mind of some kid asking the question who genuinely didn't have a clue :D. I mainly use DVD's now, but I have some VHS tapes that I have kept from the 90's - I used to have a quite a collection and I have many fond memories of recording and collecting movies :).
best part about VHS- hit stop, and turn it off, then then when you turn it on and press play again- it magically starts at EXACTLY THE SAME SPOT!!!!!! NO MENUS PREVIEWS CODES WARNINGS!!! AMAZING!!
My first DVD player used to record or bookmark the part of the movie you had stopped at, even when put on stand-by. My current model, which is also a recorder, will remember where you stopped at but would forget on putting it on stand-by. Having said that, my recorder is a cheap Lite-on model whilst my player cost twice as much as the time.
I personally HATE the sitar used in the US soundtrack version of the song (the song used in this video clip) and thought the more subdued electric guitar version used in the film was much better. The sitar just feels so out of place and jarring. I might be the only one...?
would you happen to know what name sebastian gives the empress I can not get that name for the life of me. I think its his mothers name but i dont know he yells it and its not clear
there are alot of questions I have about that movie. such as when she says to him "they were with him when he was in the book store. they are listening to us right now". was she referring to us? WHO KNOWS!
It is supposed to be referring to us, the movie watchers or book readers. It's a rethoric resource called "autodiegetic" (autodiegético). The idea is to include us, the readers, inside the story, transforming us into characters, so to say. Like those 'choose your own adventure' books, only cooler.
Exactly! And "the nothing" represents the fading away of hope and fantasy from us humans. If I look around me these days it's on the winning hand...I hope in other parts of 'our' world it's different ;-)
One of my favourite childhood movies! Love the story and the music!

I remember when I watched this for the second time on VHS rental - I wanted to keep it so much. . . I watched this intro a few times :).

What is a VHS?

The 80's video tape cassette format that proceeded DVD's.

Im sorry. I was kidding with you. I love VHS. I have a ton. I like them more than DVDs.

lol - OK, but I had this image that flashed through my mind of some kid asking the question who genuinely didn't have a clue :D.

AMAZING!!

That's exactly what I miss about using tapes !

You're not the only one...

The American Introduction was so much better than the European One, I remember first seeing this so many years ago.

would you happen to know what name sebastian gives the empress I can not get that name for the life of me. I think its his mothers name but i dont know he yells it and its not clear
ciandraj 4 years ago
I have no clue, honestly though I think the people that made the movie designed it so that we could know the name, or something like that, sorry.
Nightshift10000 4 years ago
yeah that is possible. I guess thats what makes it so interesting.

there are alot of questions I have about that movie. such as when she says to him "they were with him when he was in the book store. they are listening to us right now". was she referring to us? WHO KNOWS!
ciandraj 4 years ago
Actually she was, and That was SO COOL!
Nightshift10000 4 years ago
awsome
ciandraj 4 years ago
It is supposed to be referring to us, the movie watchers or book readers. It's a rethoric resource called "autodiegetic" (autodiegético). The idea is to include us, the readers, inside the story, transforming us into characters, so to say. Like those 'choose your own adventure' books, only cooler.
DarkReiAyanami 3 years ago
Exactly! And "the nothing" represents the fading away of hope and fantasy from us humans. If I look around me these days it's on the winning hand...I hope in other parts of 'our' world it's different ;-)

I saw it on the internet some years back. It was the name of his mother who died. I will search for it again.
