before i ever beat the game, it glitched on me when i got to the light house. and i appeared in the space zone. i was like "HOLY CRAP WHERE AM I" and then i got farther in the game and relized those were actual boards. i thought those were secret levels but it just glitched on me haha.

SFA makes you think though, perhaps they wanted it to be a far more elaborate adventure than even DKR was? Hard to picture a racing game with a Zelda like progression, but it could actually have worked come to think of it. Or maybe it didn't and that's why they cut (most of) the racing and put in adventuring.
