These used to be so fun and heart warming to watch, until the last few years. Now nobody cheers or claps except at the end. I think its better TV & just better when the audience reacts to each individual. This isn't Russia so let the audience clap and cheer louder for who they want to
@RonnyUniverse They may have been clapping and the sound people might have been cutting it out to add to the experience; who knows? I personally prefer it w/o the constant applause with each person. It just feels more "right" and honoring to save all the applause until the end and watch quietly.
This is hands down the best song I've ever heard by Queen Latifah. I've seen many of the "in memoriams" of the oscars but this one was the one that stuck in my head.
Has to be one of the greatest Oscar moments ever. And what losses......Charlton?.......Paul Newman? Queen Latifa is just magnificent. I don't think this moment will ever be challenged or duplicated.
We should all take a page out of his book, especially young Hollywood. He was a class act. He had a passion for his wife that you don't see anymore. He once said, "I have steak at home, why go out for hamburger." Like I said, one of the most genuine human beings I have ever met, if no the most genuine. I only met him once, but I teared up when I watched the Oscars and I still do when I see this video. I hope to be half the man he was, both in my career and in life in general.
I work in film and I have met countless celebrities. I got the chance to meet Paul Newman. I didn't meet him on a shoot but through a good friend of mine who had ties to his racing team. I have to tell you, I have never been nervous in front of anyone, celebrity or not, but when I met Paul I didn't know what to do with myself. Not only is he one of the greatest actors of all time or a humanitarian we should all envy, but he is just one of the most genuine human being I have ever met.
SOME PEOPLE complained...."where the hell was George Carlin? I can't believe they left him out of this year's tribute, he's been in a few films".
Yes, Carlin is mainly noted for being stand-up comedian, he was Never that close to the Academy (or making mark in film) at all. He did the Doris Day "with 6 you get eggroll" also appeared in both Keanu Reeves "bill and ted" , "jersey girl", "dogma", and did voice-over in cars, along with also gone-same-year Paul Newman. that's about all...
"The big difference between people is not between the rich and the poor, the good and the evil. The biggest of all differences between people is between those who have had pleasure in love and those who haven't."
the piece of footage that always gets to me in this in memoraim montage is the kitchem scene from Mr & Mrs Bridge because you can see how much Paul loved Joanne and it's still hard to think of him as gone.
I think the saddest part about Bernie Mac is in the final clip they show of him (from the 2005 movie Guess Who) he's nodding his head farewell and walking out the door. :-(
Even though he may not have been technically part of the Academy or been in any movies, they should've mentioned Don LaFontaine (the movie preview "voice"). He DID have an impact on movies and Hollywood with his awesome work over all the years.
joevach10- yes, there were some complaits about George Carlin not getting in because he had impact to comedy and people. but he was never a member or even appeared at the academy, or appeared in any very worthy films for his omission to hurt.
i think i'm just morbid, but the in memoriams are ususally one of the best parts about award shows. They give us time to remember some of the true greats of the time, and to know just how much the contributions have made through their lifetime and what will continue to influence more to come.
@Randomness7171 I agree! They *are* the best part. They remind us of how beautiful (outside AND inside) and talented they were and how much they affected us with their lives and performances. It is a tribute to pay our respects, like any other memorial, and is always touching therefore.
it's sad to say but i when i was younger, my dad made me (or tried to make me) watch Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and TONS of Paul Newman films...of course i wasn't interested in them @ 9 or 10...when he died i started to look @ his films and looking at this again, i actually cried when Paul Newman came up last...this it the FIRST time i cried over an actors death...he truly touch sooo many generations...and he still lives on...literally no other...
There's always a bunch of star they miss but I thought Don Lafontaine, the guy who pioneered movie trailers with his voice, should have been acknowledged.
@niggly54 I totally, totally, and I mean totally agree with you. Mr. Lafontaine gave a whole new dimension to the screening of coming attractions. His definitely should have been remembered in this tribute.
okay I give up.to note: some late actors not included are Harvey Korman, appeared in several-oscar nominated Blazing Saddles. and worst Patrick Mcgoogan who was the MAIN VILLIAN in Mel Gibson's Braveheart which WON BEST PICTURE
I am just wondering...because she is flat on the last note and she takes a breath in the middle of the word "lovely"...if it was pre-recorded, why did they leave that in...?!
@myrnaloysboy Quite right. 2010 had James Taylor doing a cover of In My Life. Not a proper song choice. Fire and Rain would have been better. For 2011 it was Celine Dion with Smile. She was good but again, the song just didn't seem to fit. It was more a song of hope, unlike I'll Be Seeing You, which better reflect the feelings of those who have lost someone they dearly loved. Queen Latifa's cover was well done. Apart from this, I like the tribute from 2005 featuring a sad solo from Yo-Yo Ma.

Heath Ledger died shortly before the 2008 Oscars, whereas this memoriam celebrates those who died between the 2008 Oscars and 2009 Oscars.

In 2011 tribute, they missed Ingrid Pitt...she was the quintessential queen of horror, very disappointed.
