how many season has the 49ers finished with a top record and went deep in the playoffs while being favored and not win a superbowl or even go to one??? all thes seasons they didnt win a superbowl....the 49ers have the most wins in the 1980s and even the most wins in the 1990s
i do feel you guys had the best team in 95.but you guys could have used ricky watters in 95 against green bay,and deion shutting down freeman and brooks, but in the playoffs anything goes.
Niners lost their gamebreaker, thats why gb beat us, their d 2good to beat w/o stretching field. hard to tell where jr broke kneecap..........great, great memory though.....looking back this comeback combined w the fact he walked off field with a broken kneecap, may be his greatest achievement
This was my most memorable game ever as a 9er fan. Not only did he come back and the team played inspired but Jerry scored. My hero. The GOAT. I have seen many of his greatest accomplishments but to see him come back from a major knee injury is the greatest thing of all. TOP THAT COWBOY FANS
after the 94 season, the 49ers made the mistake of letting deion and ricky watters go,if they would have kept those two, theywould have certainly would have had at least two more rings.
@SuperJM1980 gotta disagree, although your point is arguable....I feel that their neglect of the ol was their undoing...every year after 95, with the exception of 98, their protection was spotty....95, 97 we had great defenses without deion. l always felt we were best team in95 but lack of running gm didcatch up 2us,woredown our d......last reg. season game vsatl KILLED us, we win and gb goes to dallas 2nd round...no way they win there, no way dallas beats us then..anyway deion idk..waters maybe
@SuperJM1980 I completely and emphatically agree that Ricky Watters leaving kept the niners from winning another Super Bowl. Sander definitely would have helped as well.
1. Rice re-injured his knee on this very TD catch and missed the playoffs.
2. The Niners demolished the Broncos in this Monday Night game and Denver went on to win the SB. Man what could've been if the Niners had figured out a freaken way to beat GreenBay. I blame Young man. He chocked harder than anyone when it came ot the Packers games (of cource until 98 wildcard game).
@miggizle85 I'm a Niner fan to the bone, but I don't think the 9ers would have beaten the broncos in the superbowl that year. That was a determined Broncos team!
@carakara That may be so but when never knows for sure. Maybe your right, or maybe this Monday Night Showdown was a preview of what could have happened. One thing's for sure tho. If the Niners didn't win it, I am 100% glad that Elway and the Broncos won it instead, and not the freaken Packers.
Seriously. Everyone needs to realize how amazing (and, actually, stupid) it was for Rice to play in a game THE SAME SEASON he tore his ACL AND MCL!!! Jesus Christ. That's an injury that modern players take over a year to recover from. Jerry was playing that season, and despite breaking his patella in this game, he STILL had 1000 yards the NEXT season!
@agreen182 thats why jerry rice is the greatest. he came back and even scored! it was kinda a rush but the fact that he did it is a testement to his heart. the best players arent the most skilled they are the guys that want it the most.
I think the hit in the end zone was late and it cracked his knee cap always disliked Atwater.Could you imagine what numbers Rice would of had had he not been injured ?Atleast another 25 tds and that is being conservated.
Does Anybody have this game between the Broncos and the 49ers from December 1997 involving NFL Hall of Famers John Elway Terrell Davis Steve Young Jerry Rice as well as the jersey retirement ceremony of Joe Montana, and if so can you upload for me to enjoy please?
@DieHardSportsFan92 elway is slightly overratd. career high was 93 for qb rating, and that was in 1998! his qb rating in his mvp season was 25 points lower than peyton mannings best mvp season or bradys or marinos mvp season..... and about 20 points lower than steve young or montanas or brett favres best mvp season
THIS GAME WAS HUGE. It was destined to be a Superbowl preview if it hadn't been for the fucking Packers knocking us out of the Conference Championship. No way in hell Broncos would have beat the 49ers in a SB that year. (But all things being, I was very happy for Denver/Elway to finally bring home a Lombardi.)
one of my favorite 49er moments. Jerry blew his knee out again on that TD catch and was out for the rest of the season. We win a super bowl if warren sapp doesn't horse collar Jerry in week 1.
97 was probably the 49ers last "great" season of the decade; they were still good in 98 but not as much of a contender because Atlanta (14-2), and Minnesota (15-1) emerged as juggernauts
@vudujl83 I don´t think so. In 98 they were still better than the Falcons. But in the playoff game Garrison Hearst was injured and Bryant Young. With them, you blow the Falcons out of their dome. Falcons were overrated, they never should have been reached the SB. 49ers, Vikings, Packers, they all would have been a better opponent for the Broncos.
Yeah everyone I'm only 25 years of age, but ever since I've been alive & watching football this is the greatest 49er team to never get to the Superbowl. This is still when the Pack' had their number & were at the top of their game going to their second-straight Superbowl. Either way I really thought in the 1997 NFL Playoffs it should've been th 49ers Vs. The Pittsburgh Steelers in Superbowl XXXII.
@mattyhasselhoff How about the 92 team that lost at home to Dallas in the NFC Championship game? Don't know if they were better than the 97 team, but the 92 team was 14-2 while the 97 team was 13-3
jerry might've been the difference-maker against the packers (probably not -- they had our number), but he still made a mistake by coming back. previous to this game, i remember rod woodson saying jerry shouldn't have come back early, speaking from his own experience of returning in time for the super bowl from a torn ACL, and the lingering effects it had on his speed.
This is like waking up from a coma for me...I was in Marine Corps boot camp, so I missed pretty much the entire 1997 NFL season. Thanks for posting this
even though he got hurt this showed how great he really was he came back in 15 weeks.jerry rice is the greatest not only his stats but the drive that he had. rice is the man.
97 was a great year...Jerry returned to the line up just to get injured again :( that move cost us another super bow and we obviously didnt need him to beat Denver to get us the #1 seed
@RongSoulja1992 I am a huge 49er fan but even with Jerry that year, had he made the NFC Championship, the Packers were near unstoppable. Most considered it a huge huge upset for Denver when they beat them in the Superbowl. I hated the Packers and i still can't stand Favre. This 49er team was a very good team, Superbowl worthy, but the Packers were a real thorn in their side from 1995-97. They were real fortunate to beat the Pack the next year on that last second catch by Owens.
@Markco1 That NFC Championship game back in '97 season was the HARDEST LOST I've experienced as a 49er fan. I hated the Packers too but I do think that Rice could've been the difference maker in that game even though the Packers were the dominant team. And also, RB Garrison Hearst was also coming back from an injury THAT game too and he turned out to be the difference maker in taking that monkey off the 49ers' back of finally eliminating the Packers the following year in the playoffs.
@checkmateforever I won't say that the 49ers would have won had Rice and Hearst been healthy, but it definitely would have changed the tone of the game seeing as the 49ers didn't score a single offensive touchdown
@checkmateforever No the hardest lost was in '90 when the 49ers tried to 3 peat but lost to the Giants in the NFC Championship game at home and Montana got knocked out by Marshall. The Cowboy losts in '92 and '93 were bad too. The '95 and '97 lost to the Packers are also bad memories.
let me guess final score 17-10? beating the superbowl champs.
