@turtleguy923 Two entirely different approaches to whitewater. Canoes and kayaks are very different. But a canoe can do everything a kayak can, and can hold beer
Dooley is the Best, along with Eli, Psycho, Nolan,Wayner, Dan House, etc....i think Dooley just takes it tothe next level...also a hell of a nice guy.....
@Alexdieded It depends on how much you weigh and what type of rivers you are wanting to paddle. The website cboats.net has lots of great info.
Also, there is a new boat coming out this month called the Esquif L'Edge that may be the best boat for getting into the sport. I'm getting one this week. I will try to post some video
@CorreySchaad With the correct outfitting, you can roll up a whitewater canoe. Takes a great deal of skill, and even more mental skill; as you have to keep focused, while being upside down in a canoe, in rapids, as rocks fly past your head
Blows my mind. I did a lot of canoeing in the 70s and 80s -- what people are doing these days is just incredible. Half of this stuff was considered "unrunnable" in my day, and he's playing in it!
Equipment is much better, shorter boats, better designed for whitewater, but takes nothing away from this guy's skill level. Goodness gracious! Wish I hadn't torn up both my shoulders, this makes me want to paddle!
What would be the best way to learn whitewater canoeing? I am very comfortable with solo and tandem lake canoeing, including wilderness tripping, but I've never had the opportunity to try whitewater; It looks like a blast! My local paddling organization (Paddle Manitoba) doesn't have any courses on whitewater. I've read some of Bill Mason's material, will that be enough to get me started if I start on small rivers and slowly progress? Maybe you pros can help me out. Thanks!
Start on some really easy rivers Class I or Class II. I would recommend the book thrill of the paddle by Paul Mason. I would also suggest watching the DVD solo playboating by Kent Ford. The book and the video should be enough to get you started learning the basics of eddy turns, peel outs, and ferrying. Good luck! It is a really fun sport.
Thanks a bunch! I'll check that out. I also just found all of Bill Mason's videos online at the National Film Board of Canada's website, and watched the whitewater stuff. Take care
hey! I love canoeing flat/moving water and am from Manitoba im pretty familiar with paddle manitoba. for whitewater, I would recommend the Manigotagan river, great starter river. But bring somebody who's experienced. If you want guided trips i would recommend Red River Outfitters or Manitoba Pioneer Camp (MPC). I work at the camp every summer. We're a wilderness canoe tripping camp including whitewater.
Yah, camp stephens is ok. but personally i prefer Manitoba Pioneer Camp. I like their site better, also they seem to have better outripping equipment. Stephens and MPC often visit eachother on canoe trips. they're like 2 or 3 days paddle away from each other!
That's me in all this footage and no I don't use straps in my spanish fly. I use the bulkhead outfitting. I like the bulkhead because you can jump in and out of the boat quickly and you can customize the knee holes to fit tightly in the boat.
Wow! You rock! I was out on the Swale (rocky class 3 in the UK) in my Spanish Fly and it scared the pants off me! It was still good though. Seeing all the stuff you do made me brave enough to run a small fall... eeek! Thanks! LizzieX
Thanks for proving that open boats can go anywhere kayaks and rafts can...thanks for upholding the long-standing tradition of canoeing in a world gone kayak crazy! Keep on keepin' on.
Awesome video. Makes me wish I was a lot younger! Nice boats now to. I wrecked a lot of them in the day but these ones today are made of such strong stuff! I still canoe everyday but nothing more than class 3 anymore. Good job on the posting!
I slid down one of those rapids on my ass one time. Oceana. It was in low water though haha. Nothing like that.

@CorreySchaad If you take the 'skid plates' off a traditional whitewater canoe, the airbags act as a scoop when you lean forward. It's an "ender"

How did you do that flip @ 1:30? custom canoe?
