Yeah, Machida is AWESOME. I've always been mostly a jiujitsu and wrestling guy myself, but Machida has proven that a TRUE martial arts striker can succeed in MMA. He really has created his own beautiful striking art. It is NOT karate; all the karate fighters I've seen are stiff, with no movement, and lousy attacks. (sometimes even a "karate chop"lol) Machida uses a blended striking art that is truly effective. He hits without getting hit;The dream of martial arts for ages. Plus he can grapple.

machida's striking is actually true karate. his punches are very straight like karate. and his back is very straight, a trademark of karate. like joe rogan said, "he kicks from his stance" which is also a huge part of karate. but most of all he uses the true philosophy of karate: end a fight as soon as possible. which hes pretty good at. haha. so maybe he doesnt kiai when he punches, but its still karate at its best dude.

Well, he is definitely NOT just using karate. He needed to add juijitsu, wrestling, and Muay Thai to it to make it really effective. Otherwise he would have been taken down and submitted ages ago. So its not karate, its MMA, with some karate added.

But even the karate he uses is VERY different from anything I've seen taught in North America. He uses a very modified version of Shodokan karate; I think its his own unique style..."Machida karate". Way different from regular karate.

If you actually watch the full match, he drops the guy near the end and had it gone another 1-2 minutes he probably would have knocked him out. He lost because his opponent was able to control him for the majority of the fight with takedowns and a great top game. But in a 5 rounder, the outcome would probably be no different from all his other mma fights. Everyone has an off day.
