true. but even 1 more minute of battle would be so satisfying^^
e.g. the scene where Voss is attacked by Brown... i wondered: where have his wingmen gone to? i guess its the scene at 1:34 where the two Albatros crash.
...and acted. This movie certainly smells! It's just not in the same league as Das Boot. But hey, watch it yourself and decide. Just make very strong coffee to keep you awake during those, all too many scenes, where Richthofen's girlfriend (?) shows up to make sure we all know that "war is hell".
This movie royally SUCKED!!! Way too much hand-wringing on the ground. Not nearly enough aerial sequences. The war seemed incidental to their boring personal lives. Obligatory "war is hell" speechifying (Richthofen a peace activist?!?!). The lead actor was not nearly charismatic enough. Brown and Richthofen chit-chatting on the ground...give me a f***ing break. I wanted to like this movie but it was a great big steaming pile of crap. Modern movies - over produced and directed and under written.
I liked the film but thought the 'baron' could of been a few years older -out of drama school!! Made worse by the lady (Lena Headey) he had an romance with was older and more experienced actor.

I cracks me up how they make WWI biplanes and triplanes fly like modern day fighter craft... If they actually attempted those moves then their wings would fly off or their engines would stall! I wish they would make actually make an authentic movie like the Blue Max again.
@omega856 i didn't notice any especially unrealistic maneuvers. Those bi-planes were much more maneuverable than you think. In many ways they we're actually much MORE maneuverable than the planes flown in WWII.
The only thing I noticed was a long, hard dive by an Albatross D. Va that would have most likely shorn it's bottom wing off. That plane was notoriously unstable in a dive.
@Ironzealot7531 Excuse me? Obviously you havent seen a real biplane in action before. The Nieuport in particular was prone to structural collapse as well as others in a steep dive. There is a reason why planes were switched from biplanes to monoplanes. Their engines also wouldnt allow them to go as fast as is shown in the movie. Like I said, see the movie "The Blue Max" that actually shows REAL WWI planes in action and compare the two.
@omega856 I've seen the blue max, and like i said about this trailer other than the speed, nothing struck me as particularly unrealistic.
Planes of this age we're quite floaty thanks to the tremendous lift generated by their multiple wings. Some of them (like the Camel or the Dr I) could also turn 180 degrees on a dime. Which is something no WWII era plane could do. The principle failure of these planes was their limited speed and high altitude flight capabilities.
If you want authentic, watch "The Blue Max" with George Peppard...
its hard to imagine the Albratros DIII doing 6 or 700 mphs diving through clouds...machine guns need to be slowed down too...and the planes are way way too wiggly ...top speed was only 80 to 90 mph in a dog fight...Im bummed...I need authentic...
They're Barrage Baloons. An Aerial protection against low-flying aircraft, they are supposed to catch on the wings of enemy planes, and snap the wings off. They were also used in the Battle of Britain, but recieved the most use in WW1.
@NHSActor That actually wasn't a barrage balloon. It was an observation kite-balloon which was widely used by both sides in W W I. Observers were suspended in a basket underneath to spot for artillery. They were dangerous to attack as they were important enough to heavily defend with aircraft and anti-aircraft guns. Despite this danger Willy Coppens the Belgian Ace shot down something like 35 of them. If attacked they would be quickly winched down or the observers would jump out in parachutes.
@MrCcragg27 Leonardo da Vinci invented the parachute. German pilots used parachutes toward the end of W W I. I believe kite-balloon observers used them throughout the war.
MrDiehard666, i believe the red baron was great but the nazis were a fascist group, the wermacht were just german's military, he didnt do anything wrong, he was just another guy fighting for his country.
@Rell323 lol... You're True. You gotta understand about other people, they don't know much of history... I found a comment saying" Why do Nazis Fly Old Wooden Planes". Well That dude must have failed his history!
What are you a moron? You have the wrong war pal. Read and learn, before you open your yap about something which you know absolutely nothing about! The next thing that you will be doing is making comments about George Washington's service in the American civil war!
i agree, the side is irrevlevant. i mean people always bunch the nazis and the wermacht into one. the nazis were a political party, the wermacht were just the army, the were conscripted, they had no choice. i am aware that this is ww1, but the same principles still stand. he was given orders and he did them well, nobody can dispute that
its sad that richtofen never really got the fame he deserved just because people believe he fought on the wrong side. he was the most amazing fighter pilot to ever live.
He didn´t get the fame he deserved? I'm pretty sure everybody knows the Red Baron. As a matter of fact, I think he may be the most well know fighter pilot in history.
Thouroughly enjoyed the film. Not 100% there, but at this point, i'm glad it was not flyboys and MvR was not like Darth Vader in a red TIE Advanced lol.
It was almost certainly an Aussie on the ground shot the Red Baron, based on the nature of the wound and the amount of time Richthofen continued to fly after Brown shot at him and banked away. I was disappointed in this movie. It could have been done a lot better. Check out my Red Baron song in the "BicyclingGuitarist" channel here on YouTube. The lyrics and images are historically accurate and the song rocks. I wrote it on a bicycle (not kidding about that!)
@al28283 What are you saying no to? That the evidence indicates the Baron was shot down from the ground and not by Brown? That I wrote a song about the Red Baron? I've studied this subject for forty years, and while we may never be certain the facts are as I state them.
@al28283 You don't have to. I offer it freely. Some people like it. My new band has a better version of it than the one I posted solo, but we haven't recorded it yet. It rocks, and as I say, the lyrics are historically accurate and the images used in my YouTube video are also historically correct.
What do you think he was doing when he was shot? He was dogfighting with Roy Brown. That's why many people believe it was Brown who shot him down. Modern research now proves that it was a very lucky shot from the Australian.
there was no brit in the air at the time the red baroon was chasing a canadian pilot there was a brit on the ground with a machinegun and the australian when he flew past they both fired ofcourse the brit fired a lot more bullets and the baron landed then died and the brit got the credit up till 1960 when they examined the bullet more closely and it was a different caliber to the machinegun it was a 3o3 caliber bullet meaning the only one that coulda done it was the australian.
Close. He was shot from the ground by an Australian machine gun crew, using a Lewis machine gun. This weapon uses the same .303 calibre ammunition as the Empire-used Lee-Enfield rifles, as well as the Vickers machine gun on the Sopwith Camel. The trajectory of the fatal bullet shot was shown to have only been possible if fired from the ground, and eyewitness reports credited the Australian machinegun crew. A friend of mine is the grandson of one of the machine gun crew.
I know my history, it was an Australian. And don't tell me I'm wrong for I have numerous books and documents stating that it was an Aussie that shot the Baron down. Also, I am now even more sure due to Jollygreenslugg saying he knows the grandson of the crew.
same round exactly the same round , I am American who loves both the Aussies and the British . Completely neutral on this one . Jolly is 100% right . All the weapons that "could" have fired the fatal shot . Used a bullet of exactly the same type
the british machineguns did use 3o3 ammo but based on the position the bullet penetrated the red barons body the only one it could have been was the aussie.
thats how they figured it out.
i find it weird since the americans actually celebrate shooting down the red baron yet there where no americans in the somme.
@AlienFirefox Ok you are confusing me a little . In one post you say British in this one aussies . I was merely stating that all possible weapons involved used exactly the same ammo . Americans by and large are not taught history very well . I am fortunate in my father taught me how to apply critical thinking . I don't really celebrate the death of Von Richtofen , but my opinion is better him then another one of the fine allies that shared the defense of the ideals our three nations share .
The movement of the planes is too snappy in these clips -- the G-forces these would generate in real life would tear the airframes of those old wood and canvas jobs to pieces (not to mention knock the pilots out in seconds). Guess they have to keep things moving quickly for the Nintendo crowd.
That said, the planes LOOK great. Good research went into this.
Yep. The Hurricane comes to mind as a "canvas" job (stretched over metal tubing, like the Fokker designs).
The Mosquito, too, although this was really more a "wooden wonder" than a "canvas job".
That said, control surfaces (ailerons, elevators, rudder) on most warplanes -- even those of otherwise "all-metal construction" -- were canvas-skinned right up to the dawn of the Jet Age. IIRC, this was an anti-icing and/or ease-of-handing measure (no fly-by-wire in those days!)
Oh yes, you are right at 100% infact the real secret of that tactic was to hit it in the hydrogen reserve storages........ take into account that this kind of attack were successful 1 every 50...... so as you can see you had to be very skillfull....... and lucky!!!!!
because they were filed with hydrogen and the spark initiated an explosion, and btw it was a flare, they used rockets and flares. ok rockets and flares very good. it is obvious from the motion picture what method was used. mmmmm.......yes
"I have heard that this movie was screwed up and is really going to suck (according to some IMDB users)"... so far.. according to some of those reviewers... every movie in the world sucks.. i havent seen a sigle positive review in the movies ive check there...

No wonder the British used brown pants.

Shame I heard the film wasn't that good. The dogfights look pretty well done, if a tad unrealistic.
mattiatorX 1 year ago

NHSActor 1 year ago 2
@NHSActor They were used to spot artillery as well if I am not mistaken.
vetitoe362 1 year ago
@vetitoe362 in the early part of the war yes. but then aircraft were introduced
balongaboy 1 year ago
@vetitoe362 I think those are different types of balloons.
buildingeverything 1 year ago
@NHSActor That actually wasn't a barrage balloon. It was an observation kite-balloon which was widely used by both sides in W W I. Observers were suspended in a basket underneath to spot for artillery. They were dangerous to attack as they were important enough to heavily defend with aircraft and anti-aircraft guns. Despite this danger Willy Coppens the Belgian Ace shot down something like 35 of them. If attacked they would be quickly winched down or the observers would jump out in parachutes.
Zebred2001 1 year ago
@Zebred2001 except parachutes werent invented yet.
MrCcragg27 1 year ago
@MrCcragg27 Leonardo da Vinci invented the parachute. German pilots used parachutes toward the end of W W I. I believe kite-balloon observers used them throughout the war.

MrDiehard666, i believe the red baron was great but the nazis were a fascist group, the wermacht were just german's military, he didnt do anything wrong, he was just another guy fighting for his country.

i agree, the side is irrevlevant. i mean people always bunch the nazis and the wermacht into one. the nazis were a political party, the wermacht were just the army, the were conscripted, they had no choice. i am aware that this is ww1, but the same principles still stand. he was given orders and he did them well, nobody can dispute that
MrDiehard666 2 years ago
its sad that richtofen never really got the fame he deserved just because people believe he fought on the wrong side. he was the most amazing fighter pilot to ever live.
MrDiehard666 2 years ago
@MrDiehard666
He didn´t get the fame he deserved? I'm pretty sure everybody knows the Red Baron. As a matter of fact, I think he may be the most well know fighter pilot in history.

he is, im not disputing that hes extremly well known. but its more infamy than fame that people seem to talk about him in.

BicyclingGuitarist 2 years ago
@BicyclingGuitarist no
al28283 1 year ago
@al28283 What are you saying no to? That the evidence indicates the Baron was shot down from the ground and not by Brown? That I wrote a song about the Red Baron? I've studied this subject for forty years, and while we may never be certain the facts are as I state them.
BicyclingGuitarist 1 year ago
@BicyclingGuitarist no to listening to your song
al28283 1 year ago
@al28283 You don't have to. I offer it freely. Some people like it. My new band has a better version of it than the one I posted solo, but we haven't recorded it yet. It rocks, and as I say, the lyrics are historically accurate and the images used in my YouTube video are also historically correct.

the red baron was never shot down in a dog fight
he was in fact shot in the chest from an australian rifleman with a 3o3 caliber rifle
AlienFirefox 2 years ago
What do you think he was doing when he was shot? He was dogfighting with Roy Brown. That's why many people believe it was Brown who shot him down. Modern research now proves that it was a very lucky shot from the Australian.
iankiller1 2 years ago
wrong mate
there was no brit in the air at the time the red baroon was chasing a canadian pilot there was a brit on the ground with a machinegun and the australian when he flew past they both fired ofcourse the brit fired a lot more bullets and the baron landed then died and the brit got the credit up till 1960 when they examined the bullet more closely and it was a different caliber to the machinegun it was a 3o3 caliber bullet meaning the only one that coulda done it was the australian.
AlienFirefox 2 years ago
Jollygreenslugg 2 years ago
it was a brit firing a mg mate not an aussie
AlienFirefox 2 years ago
I know my history, it was an Australian. And don't tell me I'm wrong for I have numerous books and documents stating that it was an Aussie that shot the Baron down. Also, I am now even more sure due to Jollygreenslugg saying he knows the grandson of the crew.
iankiller1 2 years ago
im not saying it wasnt the aussie that sht him down im saying it wasnt done with a machinegun it was done with a 3o3 rifle round
a rifle not a machinegun
AlienFirefox 2 years ago
same round exactly the same round , I am American who loves both the Aussies and the British . Completely neutral on this one . Jolly is 100% right . All the weapons that "could" have fired the fatal shot . Used a bullet of exactly the same type
dirtyhlbly 2 years ago
based on the evidence your wrong there.
the british machineguns did use 3o3 ammo but based on the position the bullet penetrated the red barons body the only one it could have been was the aussie.
thats how they figured it out.
i find it weird since the americans actually celebrate shooting down the red baron yet there where no americans in the somme.
AlienFirefox 2 years ago
@AlienFirefox Ok you are confusing me a little . In one post you say British in this one aussies . I was merely stating that all possible weapons involved used exactly the same ammo . Americans by and large are not taught history very well . I am fortunate in my father taught me how to apply critical thinking . I don't really celebrate the death of Von Richtofen , but my opinion is better him then another one of the fine allies that shared the defense of the ideals our three nations share .
dirtyhlbly 2 years ago
i never stated it was the brits
it was an aussie that shot the red baron down

The movement of the planes is too snappy in these clips -- the G-forces these would generate in real life would tear the airframes of those old wood and canvas jobs to pieces (not to mention knock the pilots out in seconds). Guess they have to keep things moving quickly for the Nintendo crowd.
That said, the planes LOOK great. Good research went into this.
ChopstickBrando 2 years ago
You know, some rather successful fighter planes of WW II were still "wood and canvas jobs"...
DevSolar 2 years ago
ChopstickBrando 2 years ago
He flew a triplane, not a biplane.
newmanbeatbox 2 years ago
Actually, most of his kills were made in Albatros II and III type fighters -- these were biplanes.
ChopstickBrando 2 years ago
He flew a biplane. But as WW I went on he flew a "modern" triplane.

AWACStunderhead 2 years ago
Oh yes, you are right at 100% infact the real secret of that tactic was to hit it in the hydrogen reserve storages........ take into account that this kind of attack were successful 1 every 50...... so as you can see you had to be very skillfull....... and lucky!!!!!
su345za45 2 years ago
because they were filed with hydrogen and the spark initiated an explosion, and btw it was a flare, they used rockets and flares. ok rockets and flares very good. it is obvious from the motion picture what method was used. mmmmm.......yes
