There is another difference in the two. The full length prevents the shooter in a gun fight from being able to cycle the gun against an object in the event of injury to the "weak hand" one would use to rack the slide. Suprised they use full length on "tactical" models. There are other ways to do this, such as raking the top of the slide against your belt or a door frame etc but the full length takes away an option of pushing against an object with the area of the frame just below the muzzle..
@prplflh71 Actually I've had to do this in a number of pistol handling classes and have never had a problem cycling off hand against an object. I'found door frames and the bottom of my boot work really well. Hook the rear sight on something and push.
@doctruptwn Agreed, like I said there are options....just nice to have ALL your options with a defensive pistol. Clint Smith teaches to use pressure against your hip/waist/belt area with the top of the slide when objects are unavailable. Keeping the muzzle pointed down range, not at your foot of course! Will work even without snagging the sight. Great video by the way. Just thought this was one item worth mentioning.
My biggest fear of the RIA tactical was the FLGR, I thought you need a pin to take it apart, or an allen wrench, but only the two piece need a pin to take apart, and only some FLGR need a tool to take apart? So I should have no qualms about buy the tactical because the disassembley doesn't require anymore tools than the GI? Wow did I just answer my question? It was all thanks to you.
@amore101 You dont have t use a tool, The rod has a small hole in it so you can use a paperclip if you choose to. It makes life a little easier. More so on the mid size and compact than the full size tac. You'll love the Rock Island.
@doctruptwn I noticed a slight different, because there is nothing rubbing against the spring. With the full length rod it would make a zipping sound when I pulled it back and now with the GI rod it's quieter when I pull the slide back. I think the only function of the guide rod is to add weight. It does nothing to improve the function of the pistol. Thanks for you video! :)
Hi, nice vid! Thanks for the information, I recently bought a Rock Island G.I. 1911 as my first 1911! I watched some vids on how to clean it and saw that my guide rod was not the same, now I undeerstand the difference! I am glad that i have the smaller rod in my 1911. BTW what is your opinion on the Rock Island 1911's? How do they compare to the high end 1911's? My dream 1911 is a Colt, but I refuse to spend a $ 1,000 on any gun. How do Rock Islands compare to Colt specifically?
@pfctjd I have a Colt and it sits in my Safe. The Rocks are Parkerized instead of blued. So the finish is no comparison as for ascetic's, even though the Parkerized finish is actually better for the gun. My Rock's have actually been more reliable than my Colt. So far I have one Rock that is just slightly over 10,000 rounds and 3 that have over 5,000 rounds. So far I have replaced 6 recoil springs and 1 firing pin. If you didn't know, Recoil spring should be replaced around 2,500 rounds.
I just bought the GI rod and plug for my Kimber. The full length thing just bothers me, knowing that it doesn't really do anything useful and makes it harder to take apart. It's not a huge difference but the parts cost 25 bucks so I figured it was a little cheap entertainment to fiddle with the recoil system.
the full length guide rod serves no purpose. Other then looks I guess. Personally, I don't like it, because it makes the 1911 even more of a bitch to take down.
Nice 1911's! Great info! I am going to shoot my springer with the government if it shoots fine i am leaving it!! Thanks for the vid! Wow the way your slide stop goes back in is sweet! My is tough and i am afraid to scratch it! Lol
@MyHollowpoint The 2 piece rods can only be for cosmetics, they just don't weight enough to have any other function. The ones that are made to add weight are made of tungston and cost a small fortune.
Hello. How long typically does the guide rod last before it needs replacement? Does it cause any harm (wear & tear) to leave the guide rod in the pistol when the pistol's slide is pushed all the way backwards ==The Compreshion? Or does it cause any (wear & tear) to leave the guide rod in the pistol as opposed to taking it out & leavnig the pistol disassembled? Just my thoughts. THX Sincerely,JAMES.
@buzzclark No real wear issues. The rod will probably last longer than the rest of the pistol. Some of the after market rod that are made in two pieces and some of the cheaper ones may be different and made of a softer metal but the factory rods Rock Island are using will last forever. The more likely wear point will be the rod thruogh bushing that is made of much thinner metal and is the contact point on the guide rod.
good info....would you please consider creating a vid on the purpose of the ejector, the different types (extended etc..) and what ther basick functions are? Mine broke off on my 1911 but before it did it must have been loose or something because all of a sudden I started having multiple FTF'S plus the gun began to jam like crazy
the full length actually took the little bit of slop i had out of the slide, so obviously it makes the slide more stable.

Do you find pulling the slide back is easier with the GI rod than with the full rod?
MrLeicamaster 2 months ago
@MrLeicamaster hadn't noticed any difference, pulling against the same spring pressure.

I don't have a problem with the full length that you have there but the two piece full length is rediculous in my opinion.
