Wouldn't the side mounting method work equally well on the opposite side (the right), thus leaving the side access flap free to open as usual?

Useful tips, but wouldnt it be better to mount the tripod on the other side? So you dont need to detache the tripod everytime you want in/out of the bag?

well definitely disadvantage...i feel it goes best with mini tripods and place it at the waterbottle holder
