There is no harm in trying...the idea of viewing a microphone as a sonic microscope just opens up a lot of fun ideas...I want to hear small sound really loud and big sounds smaller. Dynamic democracy.
Thank you for your comment...I am not really sure about the insightfulness though...! I am just experimenting and having fun and occasionally I find something interesting that I record and keep...The bicycle didn't work...for instance.
I do a lot of big Production errors. Things you are traditionally not supposed to do. I record a lot of stuff with effects so the sound is exactly the way I want it instead of recording everything clean and then trying to mess it up later. This way all the overdubs stick together and complement each other...another thing is to never record extras or safety versions...On my albums the sounds you hear are the only ones recorded. I don't record sounds for the mere joy of them sounding good.
Definitely...but it really helps having a clear picture of what you want it to sound like when you start recording the first sound. I often get pictures in my head of where I imagine the song taking place and then I try to dress the track with suitable sounds.
I like the theory with microscope...and with bicycle even if it didn't work. You have interesting ideas ;-)

I guess it's just seeing how all the little parts of a track come together.
