  • This sounds exactly like what my dad would listen to every morning on the way to school. I just learned a couple months ago that he to, is an atheist. But he didn't raise me to be an atheist, he raised me without any mention of religion at all and let me make my own choice about what I think.

  • People are hating on Palin because she is an IDIOT! Got it? There're a lot of family women & men "doing the best they can to do a good job" but I don't want them in positions of power if they are as dumb as a rock!

  • Religion is toxic. Knowledge is power.

  • RIP HITCH ..

  • Why the fuck would going after someones ideas, whether they think their imaginary friend is "almighty" or not, be out of bounds? Religious people have the right to say "Praise Jesus", and I have the right to say "That's fucking stupid". Censorship is the exact opposite of freedom of speech.

  • yes, if only the religious KEPT it that way..., my dear Linguiphile...

  • The shot of Hitchens from 2:33, I want that on a poster, it's awesome!

  • Comment removed

  • "I could care less" is now an officially correct expression!

  • Why doesn't hitchens keeps his views to himself. Oh ya!! he couldn't become rich then.

  • @NorthNorth2009 because he is speaking out against delusion, false belief, and spiritual selfishness. Do you honestly think that Hitchens became a journalist for the money?

  • @NorthNorth2009 Why don't the religious keep their views to themselves? Have you heard of the Catholic/Protestant oppression in Ireland? What about the prosecution of secularists and women in the Middle East? What about the 9/11 attacks in the name of Allah?

  • @NorthNorth2009

It would also be a great loss to society...

  • Comment removed

  • awww hey it's christopher hitchens!!!.... lets all use big words in our comments and be dicks to each other

    wait..........

  • No reason to be worried about this video...the author is very clearly an irrational and very emotional individual who is not capable to discuss issues using his mind... but instead using ofensive gestures....no need to argue with people like him

  • @

There's no need to argue with anybody. Everybody is irrational and emotional, it's part of being human. Being so doesn't prevent you from being right on a point or two.

  • I think the pictures are great!

  • The H in Hitchens stands for HERO!

  • @dirtydonki I am a very strong believer in "Christ"...."Christ"-opher Hitchens that is!

  • "You're neither a theologian nor a scientist - now you're writing a book against God? Where do you get off... ?"

lol... there is so much wrong with that question I wouldn't even have bothered answering it.

  • Hitchens is funny.

    He's handsome.

    His self-esteem is in tact.

He has a British accent, which means he's REALLY smart.

Why is he always either sad, tired, or angry?

    I can't figure it out.

  • @beginbydescending he is always drunk which is amazing because it impaires the senses and he is still able to HITCHSLAP everyone like only he know how to

  • @eltigre1201 If Hitchslaps are the best you got, you guys are in big trouble.

He's a blabbering idiot who gets a lot of mileage from his accent and his ability to strike a chord with disaffected fundamentalists. He's the Sarah Palin of atheism. An embarrassment.

  • @beginbydescending You're an idiot for comparing hitchens to palin. Hitchens is a highly educated, intelligent person. Palin is a stupid whackjob cunt that just wants to be a celebrity.

  • @flightoftheunknown Hitchens is a stupid whackjob pseudo-intellectual celebrity. Embarrassed by his support for George W. Bush, he started kissing up to his fellow non-reflective anti-theism by writing a silly diatribe, one that is easily refuted by the average third grader. His alleged knowledge of history doesn't reflect the slightest familiarity with the best scholarship on the issues he addresses, much less with primary sources. A desperate attention-seeker. The Sarah Palin of atheism.

  • @beginbydescending

"Stupid", this is what you want to say - all other adjectives are added to support this.

"whackjob" a colloquialism used to try to inspire support by others who share this as common language.

"pseudo-intellectual" maximizing syllables to establish yourself as intelligent, educated, or both.

( ironically, using a hyphen to accomplish this is self defeating... )

"Celebrity" betraying your own feeling of helplessness, and anger at your self inflicted dis-empowerment.

  • @Callirgos1

All psycholinguistics aside, Hitchens is presented (and presents himself) as an intelligent critic of history's most influential religion. No nuance. No primary source material. Hearsay. Reactionary. Yes, pseudointellectual fits him perfectly.

How did the target of his venom gain its influence? By following its founder in the way of disempowerment. It's the sort of disempowerment that people (and entire cultures) will discuss, embrace, and be indebted to for millennia.

  • @flightoftheunknown Palin is a respectable, honest family woman who does the best she can to do a good job and help people, and sticks with her beliefs!!!!1 She's out there trying to do good and everyone is player-hating on her!!! what is that???

  • @greyxwind: You can't seriously believe that a simple minded person like her is worthy of a position of power.

  • @greyxwind Look into anything her former aides have said of her; I don't think you'll be able to make those points after you do. I would also suggest that someone accuses people of being born in another country with NO evidence does not strike me as an honest, respectable woman.

  • @OdinLowe I'm just saying, people are throwing dirt. Just state the facts and leave your opinion on the person's integrity out of it, let the facts do all the work.

  • @beginbydescending Well, he does have terminal cancer.

  • Hitchens is funny.

    He's handsome.

    His self-esteem is in tact.

He has a British accent, which means he's REALLY smart.

He's successful, hard-working, and a humanitarian at heart.

Why is he always either sad, tired, or angry?

    I can't figure it out.

  • Hitchen’s book is not infuriating. The failings of corrupt or insane organized religion, are what they are. Hitchen’s book is sad because notwithstanding the tragic failures of humanity, there is a God.

  • Everyone be sure to check out my new book God is Not Gay. In it I demonstrate that, through being a sadistic macho man that kills anyone who disagrees with him or questions him, he is most certainly not interested in eating dicks so you can all stop with the fucking rumors already.

  • Hitch is one of my favorite people on the planet. I really hope he recovers from his bout with cancer. I would love to see him do an interview responding to all the religious nuts out there who claim that god struck him down and hope that it will, "Open his eyes". So much for "Loving Christians".

  • @thunderstruck665 Yes, unlike you, Christians just aren't loving enough.

  • I dont agree with Hitchens about "if it is kept private".

I debate atheism because i will never accept that some people belive that the man is superior to women, that homosexuals have no rights in society, that religion has any home at all in politics or schools.

  • GOD IS GREAT! It is judgmental ignoramuses who, armed with their 110 IQ., are so delusional as to actually believe they can know the mind of that which is all knowing who are NOT great! God save me from the Hitchens of this world who denounce the existence of God because, after all, it hasn't offered to be his bum-boy! Get real, Hitchens. God gave the human being free will and they've been abusing it and also, God ever since. Put the blame where it belongs.

  • @Theagenthollyhock You know you sound like your an insane cult member right?

  • @Theagenthollyhock

Look how deluded this guy is! Why don't you argue against his points instead of preaching, little boy? You can't, can you? Hahahahaha, it's pathetic!

  • @Theagenthollyhock how have human beings been abusing free will?

  • @Theagenthollyhock Instructions: roll joint, light joint, smoke joint. Now re-read your comment. Stupid isn't it?

  • @stepchangeable I'm blazing a good fat joint right now, and no, his comment is not stupid. You're completely wrong. What now?

  • @SmokiSounds You're smoking catnip.

  • @stepchangeable lolfail. The best buds on the coast.

  • I'm with Hitchins...

    The guy is sane...

  • God is Great. You are a fool to believe otherwise.

  • @iamsupertoad

God is dead. You are a fool to believe otherwise.

  • @freshhh1994 : God is very much alive, and He exists, whether you like it or not.

  • prove it then .@SummerSunshine1988

  • @SummerSunshine1988 Bollocks! You just have a lower evolved brain....whether you like it or not dickhead.

  • @russellrummage : That's fine. I don't care what your opinion of me is.

  • @SummerSunshine1988 Then keep your own backward opinions (I'm refferring to your religion by the way) to yourself and I'll afford you the same courtesy.

  • @russellrummage : I'm sorry if you take issue with what I believe. That's not my problem. That's your problem, and yours alone, to deal with.

  • @SummerSunshine1988 I don't particularly take issue with what you believe, I take issue with preaching. Have 'faith' people who are interested in such things will do their own research into religions, philosophies, sciences etc and let them make their own damn mind up. Instead you shove your beliefs in peoples faces. THAT is what annoys me as that is the root of much conflict, muslims are by far the worst and it sickens me. Believe what you wish and I respect that, but just don't preach please.

  • @russellrummage : Sorry, I can't and won't keep quiet. People are going to make up their own mind whether I "preach" to them or not. So no harm done.

  • @SummerSunshine1988 No harm done until everyone ignores you and you turn to force which history tells us is religions final answer for everything. You seem civil enough so I doubt, or hope is a better word, that you personally won't go that far. But many of your group would and they will. Oh well, thank God atheism, or at least indifference to religion, is on the rise. Get used to the idea that more and more people will ignore you if you're compelled to preach.

  • @russellrummage : I don't deny that some horrible things have been done in the name of religion. Keep in mind, though, that there is a difference between God and religion. You are right, I personally would never end up an extremist. And actually, Bible prophecy states that non-belief is on the rise, and it is. So that's actually not a bad thing. It's just one more Bible prophecy being fulfilled.

  • @iamsupertoad

The flying spaghetti monster is great. You are a fool to believe otherwise.

  • Look up Relationship_between_religion_and_science at Wikipedia

  • 3:00 epic photo

  • How is it possible for people to speak for an all mighty powerful being. Not only knowing that he/she/it exist but knows what its thinking. So stop with the bible bable, its been two thousand years and your time is up. I know I can't prove it dosn't exist but the proof of burden is in the hands of the the people who claim it exist. Athiest are just stating a counter claim.

  • Canlander7: You are absolutely wrong because you don't seem to have read the bible.

Jesus said, according to the bible, something to this effect:

"If a limb of yours is pushing you to sin, it is better for you to cut this limb, for it is better to enter the kingdom of god without that limb than to enter the hell with it!"

Jesus is entirely responsible for whatever people do in order to obey his schizophrenic orders!

He should not have said that!

  • @48acar19

Something to this effect? Matthew 18 verse 8 is what you meant.

Before I explain, I want you to know that it's important not to interpret the Bible by taking verses out of context, rather, read the surrounded text as well before making assumptions. In these verses, Jesus was speaking about 'temptation to sin'. For example, if you're addicted to internet porn, throw out the computer!

    Matthew 18:7-9

    Take care

  • @Canlander7 :

This is exactly what I mean. Religionists are distorting all the time the biblical texts in order to fit their present day mentality...

    Nobody needs your "splaining".

jESUS SAID NOTHING ABOUT COMPUTERS AND PORNOGRAPHY. This is your invention, your words.

Jesus said "if an organ pushes you "to sin", whatever that means, you need to cut your organ".

Don't give me BS about computers. Religionists cannot be sincere and truthful for a second!

  • Never read A bible verse. Read around the text to get some clues to what the text is talking about. When you have a verse in question in this particular case. We need to read the context. In this sermon Jesus was talking about offences (temptations or Greek: stumbling blocks) in the world. Mark chapter 9 covers this very well. With regard to the way Jesus spoke to people, he sometimes spoke figuratively. He spoke in terms that a lay person would understand. They often had higher meanings.

  • @48acar19

I'm gonna answer this in a PM because there is too much to explain to you.

  • No way!

An outright lie can never coexist with the truth.

If religious people are saying that the Universe was made by god in 6 days a few millenia ago, this is a lie.

In fact the Universe is about 13.72 billion years old.

  • @48acar19

The Bible doesn't claim how old the earth is... just how it was created and how many days it took to be formed. No one can tell you just by estimating the years when the scripture was written and how old the people were. There still isn't a set date. But I personally believe we are able to find these things out in nature. Nature proclaims His marvellous works!

  • @Canlander7 "The Bible doesn't claim how old the earth is... just how it was created and how many days it took to be formed."

None of which is based upon evidence. Just guess work from ancient Hebrew writings. Whats even more astonishing is that an incredibly high number of incredulous idiots actually believe these writings, despite the enormous amount of scientific information available.

Stupid is as stupid does. Never is the more so than with bible believers.

  • @philster61

    @philster61

    @philster61

"None of which is based upon evidence. Just guess work .... "

I could say the same about evolution. It's just the same old junk debunked over and over again.

What is your point of calling Christians idiots? Yes, there was one man who added up all the years of the people written in scripture, but that is not evidence. Neither is there evidence in the 12.6 to 12.7 billion theory. Long spands of time doesn't explain it.

    Check out quantum physics.

  • @Canlander7 evolution is supported by boatloads of evidence and has never been debunked. pick up a biology 101 textbook and see for yourself.

  • @48acar19 exactly. truth is universal. some people don't understand that and its laughable

  • Why have a fight between Religion and Science?

Can it not coexist, have it not always coexisted?

Is it not Religion = Science

  • There is no way to yhave peace between science(which is searching the truth) and religion (which sayis that the world is only a few millenia old). Lies don't go well with the truth searching. It is like water an oil.

    They don't mix well together.

  • Religion accepts ideas of reality based upon faith: acceptance without evidence.

Science does the opposite: its very nature is contradictory to faith.

As for "Religion = Science" - that is just an unsupported quasi-question. That's a lot easier than actually explaining it.

  • Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett and Christopher Hitchens are all right.

Religion is not exactly something to be respected based on the fisrt ammendment, because it has huge implications in other people's life.

Recently in Romania a monk has cut his penis because of what Jesus said. I can also exemple of 3 Budhist girls who commited suicide because of their belief that "the next time" they will be born as boys, not females.

  • One monk cuts his penis and that's the whole rationalization about Christianity? hmm.

  • The problem is not that a person has cut his penis. The problem is that he did that after reading what Jesus Christ the Christian Guru has preached. He was crazy enough to believe what that asshole (Jesus) has preached to morons.

The bible should be put away from children! Because it is a toxic book!

  • @48acar19

If it were true that Jesus said to cut off our penises then there'd be a bunch of eunuchs walking around. Now, I agree there are a lot of crazy people out there. But this doesn't pin the stake on Christianity. People are rational beings. Some more than others. You can't judge the teacher by a single rational student. Jesus spoke about eunuchs but it had nothing to do with commanding men to cut off their genitals, he was making an analogy about the eunuchs of the time and divorce.

  • Canlander, you're missing the point. Christianity tells us we are all born evil, guilty of Adam's sin, & the ONLY way we can avoid being sent to Hell forever (which we deserve) is to accept the human blood sacrifice of Jesus

It's like the man who beats his wife & tells her it's HER fault because she's worthless; he loves her but she doesn't deserve it.

It puts untenable restrictions on natural human behaviour, always broken by all of us = proof we're worthless. This is why it's so evil

  • @48acar19

it's quite sad this man took it to the next level. People will do irrational things for a loved one. And in this case he might have done it for Jesus. But I'm not here to judge him. I don't know the full story and neither do you. A man may simply say, "I did it for Jesus" But we don't know what he meant behind that.

  • No, I don't feel superior to my religious neighbors, we're all human. But I'm always worry about them.

  • "Shouldn't someone's religious beliefs be their private business?" Absolutely not, when they keep preaching at and condemning me!

I believe in evidence-based world-view. This is why I have converted from creationism to Atheism.

Christianity in the past and Islam in the present martyr unbelievers for daring to question their nonsensical faith in the almighty imaginary friend.

    Excellent book, Mr. Hitchens.

  • @Linguiphile , I like your comment here a lot! What do you say to those who say, "but Linguiphile you have all the evidence you need by looking around you at the trees, sky, look at the perfection of your eye, etc?

  • @Linguiphile For your first statement you should've said "Yes, if only the religious would keep it that way."

  • Catch Hitchens in person, I just saw him at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland, Oregon. The guy can entertain.

  • The images are misleading and insulting, Hitchens has clearly stated he is against iconoclasm and appreciates religious art, just without the need to actually be religious. Also the angry picture of him seems intended to make him seem irrational which only a fool who knows nothing of him would believe.

  • Actually, I think your objections to the pictures is a bit pedantic. "the angry picture of him seems intended to make him seem irrational which only a fool who knows nothing of him would believe. "

Um, that's a picture of him showing off his new teeth, not him being angry. It was in Vanity Fair.

  • @skepticasts Then you're using the picture out of context, which is misleading. To call someone pedantic for objecting is nothing more than obfuscating sophistry. You obviously chose the image for marketing purposes and your scrambling to justify this decision is pathetic and weak.

  • @misterdeadly1 Cool story bro.

  • @GaiusIuliusTaberna u r so fucking correct , i feel the same way

  • MeX! do you know how f*cked up that sound?

  • Do you know what game within a game is?

  • can you hear me back there in the 2nd century?

  • Reminds me of a photo of Albert Camus at 6:25

  • Ya I saw this book at a store. I still want to get it.

  • Any reasonable person ought to be an atheist.

But the next sacred cow that will be knelt its death blow is the sacred cow of the State.

Anarchism (anarcho-captialism) is the next frontier for rationalists.

  • 100% agree.

  • anarcho-socialism> anarcho-capitalism

  • Your socialistic society: Will it be enforced through the threat of violence?

Are the problems of selfishness and hoarding going to be solved by giving the right of violence and the right of property control to small group of people?

If people are selfish and stupid with their own property...how much more selfish and stupid are they going to be when given the ability to control others property?

  • whose socialistic society are you actually talk about?

  • If people can't even be expected to be trusted when trading with their own bodies and stuff, WHY ARE YOU LETTING THEM VOTE ON THE USE OF FORCE?!

  • I agree.

    I'd like to hear more.

  • Socialism, democracy...and the very idea of the State itself is inconsistent, illogical, immoral and impractical.

If any rational person would like to debate me, please let me know.

  • I'd also like to add "utterly perverse".

  • Comment removed

  • Of the four authors: Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennet, Sam Harris, and,of course, Christopher Hitchens. Hitchens is my favorite cause he really goes after theism. I do love his "bare your teeth" stance toward religion.

    Go Hitchens! XD

  • Yes, I agree. I think one should tell it like it is , and not sugar coat one's arguments. Basically, it shouldn't be a 'pillow fight'.

I found the book a bit hard to read. It was a little bit over intellectual for me, I have to admit. The sentences and the structures of a lot what he said was a bit hard to grasp, but I did get the overall jest at what he's getting at. But yes, it took a long time to read. To re -read a lot of paragraphs, etc.

  • That's cool. Now I think you'll enjoy "The God Delusion." If you've not read it already. It has a few chapters that address and rebuff creationist's favorite arguments.(Well pretty much their only ones. Creationists are not known for their originality. :P) I've also pre-order his latest book: The greatest show on earth: evidence for evolution. I think that one will provide plenty of ammunition for arguments against evolution.(none of which will come from the scientific communtiy mind u. :P)

  • ya. I read it. I was brillaint. Simple. Concise. And well written.

I still have to get the selfish gene book.

  • Selfish gene is an excellent book.

  • I forgot to mention that The God Delusion and The greatest show on earth are Richard Dawkins books. Sorry.

  • Richard dawkins is my favorite. the charisma just oozes from his pores.

  • @new8745fan Yes his lack of repect for others is quite admirable

  • Hitchens is brilliant.

  • The bombastic verbosity of The Hitch is downright biblical.

  • LOL. Hitchens hit the jackpot with every word he says.

  • Bill Maher is a fucking moron. He isn't even in the same league as Dawkins, Dennet, Harris and Hitchens.

  • amen to that.

  • You're right. He's simply joining the "bandwagon", just like Michael Moore does with other political issues.

  • I've seen your "bandwagon" posts before...like that is a great insult. What is wrong with jumping on the bandwagon if it's a good cause? What bandwagons do you ride around on? We all do it. I think you need to evaluate his opinions or beliefs on their own merit, and not object to his ideas/beliefs because they are shared by others. So, there was Jesus and the disciples.... Did everyone else simply "jump on the bandwagon"????

  • He certainly isn't a contemplative intellectual, but he does fulfill a much needed purpose, getting people to laugh at theists.

  • I love Hitchens.

I am going to see Bill Maher debate Anne Coulter on Monday. I consider Bill Maher kind of like the 5th horseman =p

  • Well he's certainly got the face.

  • Feel like that he is right on many thingssssssss Religion is A BIG PROBLEM

  • One thing that you are forgetting is that even if there was no god people would still get sick and die. Besides if you put a little critical thinking to his arguments you will find that he has no clue of what he is talking about. A neat show that has done a critique on his book (god is not great) is called (the narrow mind) I hope that this helps

  • I'd hardly say he "has no clue what he's talking about", leojjjoel. Exactly how does any of his arguments crumble when a little critical thinking is put to them?

  • One big point that I make is that Hitchens went to a church when he was 9 years old and his Sunday school teacher told him and the class how ugly the world would have been if God had made that grass/trees pink or purple. Hitchens in his mind thought that this was complete hog wash and at this point in his life he stopped going to church and became an atheist. All throughout his book he is using references that come from that 9 year olds under standing of the faith and are easily refuted.

  • I cannot speak to Mr. Hitchen's church experiences. I have been an atheist since I was about 13. This was in spite of attendance at Christian churches/camps as a child, Christian clubs as a teen, and conversion to Judaism as an adult. At my conversion, there was no secret that I was an atheist, but I was committed to being a member of the Jewish community. It is true, that my spirituality as an adult was much different than the mindset I had at the age of 9. What never changed was my atheism.

  • You actually know what you're talking about?

  • Atheists - Stand up, be recognized, and help to hold back the tide of the insanity of religious faith.

  • i do not understand why we rationalists have to qualify our lack of faith in an unproven diety(ies) by means of a special term like atheism. we do not hear of people who do not believe in vampires call themselves 'avampirists' or those who do not believe in the loch ness monster 'anessieists'. we simply call such people sane.

  • I agree. I think it's unfortunate that we have to identify ourselves as not being theist when everyone is a non-theist to begin with until you're taught theism. A baby isn't theist until his parents indoctrinate them.

  • That's the thing though, we DO have to make a statement about our position now. We have to do this thing in order to make ourselves heard. When we are the majority, then it will of course be the norm to use such nicely logical terminology, but for now it is necessary to make the statement.

  • Agreed, a minority generally has to define themselves by what makes them a minority.

  • I have agonized for yrs about what to share, and with whom, about what I believe. Most people are not interested in discussing religion, especially among friends. But at some point, we must. The religious majority have the power to effect my legal rights and liberties. I cannot rest as these groups create/change public policy. Because THEY keep ranting about god, because THEY claim righteousness in service of their god, we have to address the whole god-thing. I agree, "atheist" is so limiting!

  • @themanofearth Hahahahha.

    You poor delusional sheep.

  • @SmokiSounds Why do you say this?

  • @themanofearth because the other guy implied that a comment about faith God is supposed to be ridiculous if you're stoned. Well, I proved him contrary.

  • @SmokiSounds Ok... "him" is me and i didn't call it ridiculous I called it insane and how did you prove me contrary again? I must have missed that lengthy refutation or even a semblance of a conversation...

  • @themanofearth Ahh, wrong guy's comment. You, I just put in your place. Lmfao at pathetic militant william-wallace-wannabe poetic call to arms. Sssseriously. You guys are PATHETIC, do you understand. Hissing around youtube, blabbering your usual agenda bullshit. Inventing some "tide of religious insanity", lol. It's amusing. Truly is.

  • @SmokiSounds Ahhh... It's so refreshing when the religious people find a way to be as christ like and intellectually honest with themselves as possilbe. It's quite sad and not a little humerus that you believe yourself to have put ME in my place while you've said little to nothing save try to insult me while being a peanut gallery YouTube user: Meaning you've done NOTING on YouTube save spout on comment sections. You're a common Christ troll (i.e. an evangelical) & not even a good one. get bent.

  • @SmokiSounds P.S. The "logical" argument you have on your channel is HILARIOUS! :-P The fact that you might actually think it's good logic makes it even funnier. ROFL X-D

  • Atheists - Stand up, fight back, charge on!

  • ★★★★★ indeed.
