  • one special specificity of Master Sadeghi is than unlike many other masters of santur, his left and right mallet-strokes are identically and symmetrically powerful, which denotes decades of rigorous and meticulous practice... have been listening to this for hours and still cannot get enough of it.

  • this is almost exactly like a Hammered Dulcimer used in Medieval UK. The tuning is different by the playing is very similar.

  • @kenlor71 yes, it is.... but these have been around for ages when the were introduced to europe... so was

what is called lute. that came from arabic al ud... which became l'ud and eventually lute..... its wonderful to

    listen, not easy to play..

  • I recently got a Roland synthesizer keyboard that has roughly 4-6 versions of santurs, and even though it performs incredibly real sounds with most instruments, none sound quite this beautiful. Truly an underestimated instrument in modern music imo.

  • I want one of those

  • Beautiful music!

  • Divine.

  • یک موسیقی دان با ارزش بیش از بیست و پیر مرد با عمامه سیاه و سفید

  • this type of music is the type you bust out the opium pipe for.

  • The Iraqi santur is a bit different from the Persian santur, but they are of the same family of instruments and share a common origin diverging only a few hundred years ago. The Iraqi santur has 3 bridges, a thick soundbox, 23 or 24 courses of strings, and can play chromatic notes. The Persian santur has 2 bridges and 18 courses of strings. The oldest depiction of a dulcimer was found in southern Iraq and according to oral tradition it was further developed during the Sassanid and Abbasid eras.

  • @IraqiMaqam

    Good info. Thanks

  • nice!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • This is really beautiful!

  • Oh. my. goodness. Amazing!

  • wow... incredible

  • I want to learn how to play this one day.

  • One of the greatest santur players in the world. This artist really understands the needs of his instrument. Manouch,,,YOU are big

  • The instrument and the style of playing is slightly different from the Indian santoor, but I should say this rendition is marvelous

  • I'm speechless..

  • In China it is known as Yang Chin

  • @absjaris It's basically called a hammered dulcimer by default, it's called a Santur in Arabia and a Yang'Chin in China

  • I thought Santoor is a persian word? It never is Arabic, is it?

  • @OvertardSupreme420 Any Persian will tell you that Persians are a completely different race from Arabs...

  • @PickledPlum11

Indeed. Different by language, culture, customs, traditional dress and biological traits features.

  • doerud bar osad manoochehr sadeghi

    Beautiful!

  • The santur requires incredible accuracy by the look of it. Awesom

  • Asia music and tools are so unique... Wonderful.

  • This musical instrument is Persian/Iraqi. It's basically middle eastern so you can't really say Asia because when you say so people will immediately think of something like Japan or China.

Nevertheless, I love this instrument. It sounds so charming and catchy that I can't stop listening to it. I wonder why it isn't so popular worldwide. I think it deserves better reputation than the Cello and Shamisen.

  • @Kra7as

If you think about it, the piano ultimately was developed from the hammered dulcimer, which included the santur, and it is popular across the glob.

  • @Kra7as better reputation? why so? in my humble opinion, all instruments have equal "ranking" and status! why should one have better reputation than another. btw, this instrument is more persian-iranian than iraqi..

  • @Kra7as thats because they use the piano in west which is based on santoor. It's 100% persian instrument that was imported to arab countries and turkey after islam.

  • @Kra7as I agree. ANd I am a cellist, so that means quite a bit coming from me.

  • @Kra7as its also the grandfather of piano

  • @Kra7as PERSIAN OR IRANNNNNNNNNNI

  • @Kra7as I usuaully think every instrument has its charm, saying that though there arnt that many instruments similar to dulcimers unlike cello, though a harp comes close.

  • Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. I'm so glad I found this again. I used to watch it all the time.

  • oooh bee :)

  • I couldn't stop saying "Whoa!!" The entire piece. He's amazing!

  • 1:01 hala pasho beraghs lol

  • Greatest santur solo!

  • This Guy is God!!!

  • I ♥ Santur

  • Same here! It's my favourite instrument, with the harspichord, oud, duduk, flute, biniou and takfa coming up next! :D

This is absolutely lovely! Great job to the player!

  • excellent dulcimer player. It's also used in modern North Korean and Chinese traditional music where in China it's called Yangqin and in N.K. I'm not sure how to spell it. But this one is smaller than the one's we use. Very good player and precision is one of the hardest things to do on this instrument.

  • wonderful music.

  • This dude is kickass.

  • aahh shit!!:D lol

    sorry man!!:D

feel free to call it whatever you like!! all belongs to you from now on!!:D

  • Would I be correct in saying that the English translation of the Dastur would be Scales?

  • or perhaps Chord?

  • i don't think there's any english translation for it.. as it is originally persian..

i, on behalf of all iranians, appriciate if you please use the word "santour" for it.. :)

    cheers

  • Oh sorry Billy, I meant to say "Dastgah".

  • u'r fine!!

i'm still on the word "santour"!! ;):P

  • Ok you seem to be confused. Dastgah is the name of the chords played on the Santur.

I wasn't implying that the Santur is called Dastgah or Dastur. Thats an ignorant assumption made on your part. ;)

  • Mode would be the translation.

  • @NimaSun You mean Dastgah?

  • OMG thumbs up!!! :)

  • That is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen played on an instrument - Wow!

  • ghanshange^^

  • ebay.I'm also thinking of getting one

  • very nice

  • Jimi move over this boy can rock the house

  • very good

  • AMAZING : )

  • Beautiful music! I must get some. What are the premier artists for this instrument. I love the mode it's in. Sends shivers down the spine. Any info would be welcome.

  • It's too bad that the Chinese had to steal the santur, rename it the "yangqin", then make it sound like sh-t. :) Iranians are much better!

  • They didn't "steel" it. They invited musicians from Persia via the Silk Road to let you great Persians teach them your music. :) They gave you silk and you gave other cultural goods to them.

  • idiot!

  • very nice...affarin...

  • Yep This is the sound of a traditional santur

  • excellent

  • I love this music and would love to have a CD. Where can I get it? I purchased it from the website but have been waiting for more than six months! In spite of the extreme delay, I would still like to have a copy of this CD. Anyone have a copy? Since I already paid for it I guess a torrent file would suffice. Cheers^^

  • kheyli zibaa aafarin mamnoon!!

  • this mofo is crazy, my dads persian and he bought me one of these, but i never used it until recently.

  • Been a fan of the English Hammered Dulcimer for a long while - just discovered the Santur. This is terrific!

  • Thank you all for your responses.

  • How many strings does a santur have?

  • 72 strings

  • 72 tel var ama dörderli gruplar halinde...

yani toplam 18 nota oluyor. 4 tel bir ses veriyor. ingilizceye çevirebilir misin? :)

  • ammaryasin says "there are 4 groups which have 72 strings in total. It means santur have 18 notas and 4 strings give one voice."

  • So, It has one and a half (1½) octaves of interval. So that this instrument remains as a backing. Right ?

  • ammaryasin says actually:

it has 72 strings that are divided into 4 group which means there are 18 notes with each of them sounded by a 4-string group.

  • spectacular!
