@nika98S well my 18-55 is pretty good for portraits and landscape photography, because its relatively wide angle. my tamron 70-300mm is awesome for action photography, wildlife photography and the macro switch makes things fun, the auto focus on my tamron can be really annoying and tempermental at times though, i always use manual focus for macro photo's. bare in mind that 70-300mm lens's are alot more expensive
i'm looking for a camera, (maybe a nikon or canon) that shoots great video for sports and is not too pricey. Does anyone have any recommendations at all?
This may be a really stupid question but i was wondering if you could see the picture on the screen after you take it because you cant see it when you take the picture? Please reply
I was planning to buy a superzoom Panasonic Lumix FZ35 which seems to be quite competitive. As I know, SLR are just another whole new level. I'm seeing one of these used in the local ads for $350. Would you recommend it for really high quality pictures? If you can message me I'd be grateful.
mine has just arrived in the post! its used but its my first dslr and it looks amazing for a starter camera. plus, my mum got it for just £200 which is like $300 but im not sure x3 anyway, i cant get it till christmas. thanks for an awesome and perfected review!
hi. i was thinking of buying that camera but then i kinda want to buy the coolpix l110 all because it has video 12mp and its cheap. but i heard its crap. my friend has the d40 and it takes good pics but idk if its really 6mp? becuz i thought its 15? well i want to use a camera for band pics, streets, events, model, etc and recording shows and etc. anyhoo i can get the l110 for 170 at amazon and i can get a nikon d40 for a 100 from a friend(still in good condition)
i wanna get my first dslr even though i have been into film and photography for awhile but with just a small digital canon, who this be worth it if i could get it for 200?
@ammaretto Some standard kit lenses allow macros (my Pentax 18-55mm does), but you can always buy close-up filters, which is significantly cheaper than buying a macro lens.
@kristenisashrimp No, they do not. They do sell the Nikon D3000, which is a step up from this model. If you really insist on this camera, you could maybe check our eBay or Craigslist.
i was wondering if you could help me, i have this same camera, D40, the pictures i take look really good when i go view them on the camera LCD screen, but then i load them on my laptop or go to the store to print them and they look really bad, some look yellow, others look blue and some look like as if they are in three different pieces, do you know if its the camera settings or could it just be my laptop? Can any one help me?
i plan to buy a camera of my own .. and i wanna buy nikon d40 just like yours .. but i dont want it to be very pricey .. do you have any site or places that sell this camera? would really help ..
100% AGREE. This is ideal for a first DSLR. I bought a D40 a while ago. I have since "Upgraded" to a Nikon D90. HOWEVER I just can not part with my D40. I will keep it and use it as a "2nd camera" The D40 produces lovely "Punchy" pictures. It may only by 6.1 Mega-pixel but it PISSES ALL OVER ANY 12 MP POINT AND SHOOT.
@itskayt33 you can buy the body seperatly and buy a Nikkor 35mm AIS lens its manual focus but its the pancake series, they are the smallest nikon has.
thats a negative sir. dslr cameras are not pocket friendly. and most likely never will be. you might want to check out micro four thirds cameras they are quite a bit smaller but produce better images than standard point and shoots. you are also able to change lenses
ive heard the sony slrs have a problem with moisture getting into the electronics. also go to a best buy and see if you can hold one of each. i held the a200 and found the grip very uncomfortable but you might actually like it. also lenses are cheaper on nikons and canons.
DSLR's arent meant just for full manual my photography teacher who is soon to get her masters in photography mainly uses shutter priority and aperture priority modes FYI and if you want to take your photography one step further get PHOTOSHOP it can make just as big of a difference in your image as your new camera did but overall good video mostly well informed info.
I have a DSLR and all I ever use is manual mode. How else would I get the image that I want? If you're gonna use priority modes, you minus well buy a point and shoot. DSLR are made to be versatile. Learn how to use manual mode and I promise you, you would love your shots and feel a whole lot better knowing that YOU created that image and didn't have a preprogramed fuction do it for you.
The coolpix P90 uses a pinky-nail-sized image sensor, so no, it does not take better pictures than the D40. NO point and shoot can beat a D40.... Well... Mabye a 35mm FILM point and shoot, MAAAABYE!
I'm planning on opening a home photo studio next year. I can't figure out if I should get a Nikon d40 or d40x. Which would be best in terms of taking good quality portraits with a 3 light setup?
would this be a good beginners camera who wants to take better pictures than say a point and shoot. Can you point and shoot with this D40 and the quailty be better than a regular poit and shoot?
Aware persons. The Nikon D40 / x / D60 DO NOT have in-built auto-focus system.
It's why these cameras only support auto-focus with an Objectiv built in with Auto-focus system. It's why the cameras mentioned above support auto-focus with AF-s lenses only.

Think Personally the D40 is better then the D40x and D60 Cameras, Because they all share the same sized Sony CCD DX Format Sensor, The D40 however has 6 megapixel's, Whilst the other 2 have 10 Megapixels, How ever on the D40 the Pixels are larger because there is 4 million less then the D40x and D60, So on the D40x and D60 you'll have increased noise at higher ISO's and at general veiwing 100% size photos.
I have a question: Does the lense you used in the video, that came with the camera have manual focus? I've been looking for days for a good explanation
nice i like it screw live view that sucks the only SLR i know of that has that is the d5000 but i dont want to buy it.i want a d40 it works great especially for only 6 megapixels
you can make A3 prints with this camera on decend quallity si imagine that an A4 will look great.Of course it depends of what kind of printer do you use and what kind of paper
From the experience I've had with it shows that the multi shot only works without flash. There might be some settings you can tweak to change that but I'm not aware of any.
nice, i was gonna get the d40 initially but then i decided on the d60 it had substantially more mega pixels so i knew right away it was gonn give a much crisper image. im really happy with it i have no complains wit my d60. one thing i love is that it has the same body as the d40 so its real compact, comparing it to like the d80 up its a real nice size.

bro ok let me explain, the d40 and the d60 have the same size image sensor, plus the d60 has eeven more mega pixels so that means its gonna have a better crisoper image. why do u think that regular point and shoots dont ever give a crisp ass pic, compar the sensor. and the lense doesnt really give the crispness of the pic either. lense is mostly for giving quality pics while zooming in inlike the stardard point and shots

Very nice review. You explained pretty much all there's to explain, and it's very nice that you compare pictures from the point and shoot camera, with the DSLR.
I've thought about buying a DSLR for a long time now.
It's going to be my first DSLR, and it's going to be the D40. I've thought about the D60 and the Canon 1000D, but the D40 looks the best, considering the cost of the camera, and what it's capable of doing.
