  • Man what a sweet bird. A good way to remember how the Soviet Union saved the world.

  • i love to see these old birds flying! THANKS!

  • So great to see a fighter like this one as an airworthy example!

  • What kind of engine is in the MiG?

  • Oiginal engine is AM-35A with 1350HP, and this aircraft tail #17 was fitted with Allison V1710, because it is very complicated to find AM-35 today in suitable condition.

  • Thanks for the engine info.

I figured that it was probably an Allison except that this aircraft was within the old Soviet Union.

All the new build Yak 3's here in the USA are also Aliison powered and all in about the same horsepower range as the original powerplants.

  • The Mikulin AM-38

  • where can I find more info of this plane??

  • google. com :)

  • The MiG-3 is one of those planes that never got the use it was supposed to or the attention it deserves (it has supposed to be a higher altitude incerceptor, but thats not how the Germans fought the airwar). I am currently building two MiG-3's a 1/4 scale powred with a 62cc petrol motor, and a 1/5th scale powered by a Moki 1.8 glow.

  • You maybe mean, that was not how airwar was being fought on th eeastern war.

And indeed, ig-3 only saw a little bit of real action in the defence of Moscow where it repelled raids consisting of German heavy bombers. It was so succesful that the Germans stopped with those raids.

  • eastern front i mean

  • Beautiful Plane! Thanks for that.

  • Great stuff!! cheers for posting! beautiful plane... but it's truth, about landing speed...fast!

  • sweet

  • Incredible, I'd love to see a formation one day of I-15, I-16, La-5, Yak-3/9, MiG-3, Il-2 (when they make one in flying condition) and Tu-2. That would be such an awesome sight of Russian aviation of WW2. Until then I'm very happy of this post. Incredible footage, 5 stars :)

  • There are many more ww2 military aircraft to add to the planes you mentionned.

  • Beautiful plane from that time

    Looks very agile too

Wish I was there, thanks for posting

This plane is a legend! Few were operating in the beginning of war, Pokryshkin flew it. This plane is the symbol of superiority not in numbers but in excellence! However it had no bulletproof glass which caused some losses when attacking bombers. Read Pokryshkin's "Sky of War" how he attacched mig3 to a truck trying to get it out of encirclement...

  • Beautiful! Thanks for posting.

  • One of the biggest disadvantages of the MiG-3 was it´s high landing speed, clearly shown at the end of the video

  • Yeah, i must say.

  • They good, pilot and MiG-3!!!

  • Rewelacja!!! w końcu mig 3

  • Mig-3 one of the Soviet bakbones in air during Second world war. Good aircraft, but his role was more placed in bomber interseption. He was slight inferor than Bf-109f. But Yak's changed odds in Soviet favour a bit later. Anyway, Mig had his role and it wasn't small.

  • However the best their fighter aircraft was not the Yak,but LA5/5FN/7

  • Yak-3 was better fighter than La-7.

  • Nope,it wasn't.The propaganda made it better.Yes it was a good plane but never better than the LAs.

  • Yes... that was the reason cause Normandie Niemen guys chose Yak-3 instead of La7 or any other all war front aircraft when they were asked.

  • Actually they asked for LA5s initially, but it would appear to be a bad'advertisment'for the Yakovlev's plane.Eventually Stalin's patronage over A.Yakovlev forced the Yaks upon the French. And that is the truth you apparently are not aware of.

  • Yes they asked La5s but at that time they were flying Yak7. I'm agree with them I'd preffer the La5. Anyway Yak-3 and La7 are the best low/medium altitude fighters of WW2.

  • First the French flew Yak1s,and then Yak7s.And the only thing that makes the fully metallic LA7 low altitude is its unpressurized cockpit.

  • yeah i got 1 from duxford

  • I LOVE YOU SO MUCH.i read about this in fly past and waited for its apperance hope it comes uk bound.

    regards

    a friend from britain

  • JUST WOW, my favorite plane! Like it's dynamic forms. Thanks to all who restored plane, and pilot for pretty impressiv flying.

  • Now just get me a flying La-5 and I can die happy ;)

  • I think it would be cool to have an IL 2

  • YES definately.

The most massed produced warplane in history doesn't exist in flying form, the tragedy!

  • There are lots of IL2s in museums in Russia, I bet you could buy one and make it fly!

  • I bet I couldn't, I have no money!

  • FANTASTIC!

    I love that plane!

  • Not bad I suppose.. ;D

  • I have a feeling I may just make a model of this very aircraft at one point.. soonish.. unless some other idea pops into my head.. :D

  • Hobbyboss? Probably your best bet! I am yet to make my maquette kit (very flashy)

  • Yesw, HobbyBoss... somebody oin the Ipswich club had done one, but as crashed in the snow.. mainly due to his children playing with the model, breaking off the landing gear.. |:(

  • NICE!

  • fantastic job on the people that restored that magnificent and grossly overlooked bird, as well as on the guy flying it.

Russians, congratulations on another piece of history brought up from the ashes! way to go!!

  • Swweet.. didn't know any were still flying!

  • There weren't, not until last year when 2 or 3 examples were either made from recovered wrecks made from scratch. I hope one is heading towards the UK at some point!

  • Where have you heard about this? Maybe, I-16 or Yak-3? People at our plant told me that one wrecked MiG-3 was taken to us in 1990-91, but was stolen in just a week... And no sign of that and any other MiG-3 even in private collections

  • Read it in a magazine called "Aeroplane"

  • WOW that was Hot never seen mig 3 befor
