I am just starting to get serious about singing and this video really spoke to me because I have a physical disability, which puts me in a power chair. I always have noticed my jaw opening is limited to about two fingers worth. I feel like I have much untapped potential, could it be because of alignment? I am unable to shake my jaw like in the video and I am unsure what I can do to help this issue. Can I go to chiropractor if I have a spinal fusion?
Brett, the "motor boat" exercise was the first exercise I learned in one of your workshops. It releases my jaw and TMJ tension immediately when I need to get it resolved quickly before a gig or recording session. Often TMJ includes a tense masseter muscle in the cheek. Holding the palm of my hands against my cheeks while doing the exercise really helps too.
Wow so life has been hectic and I haven't been able to go to my chiropractor for like a year and a half now, is that why my vocals doesn't sound as good since my back isn't completely straight?
I have had that problem, but my chiro doesn't seem to have fixed the issue. Both tension and lock jaw to one side. Thanks Brett I'll show this vid to my chiro . Also have you thought ant acupuncture to ease face, neck and vocal tensrion ?
@xMx2xRx He is referring to a chiropractor, a physician working on the bones in the body and the muscles and tissue that surround them which are the most important. The muscles are there to keep the bones in place to move the bones (like the jaw-bone) but if they are to stiff and rigid, you wouldn't have a good function of movement and singing requires 3 things flexibility flexibility flexibility.
Great information Brett... Besides being a perfomer I am also a Yoga Teacher and so much of what you are saying goes back to the philosophy of Yoga. Making the mind body connection. We often chant and hummmnnnn bringing the tongue to the roof of the mouth so we can vibrate the sinuses and the top of the head where the Pituitary gland and the Pineal gland is.... the seed to our intuition.... auuuumnnnnnnn try it.. it's a great exercise! Thank you so much for all that you give...Much appreciated!
@Xica143 I have a question to you yoga-guys, is over-stretching a part of yoga Principle, take on a body position that over-stretches a group of muscles heavily, keep it so for a while, then release and the muscles are relaxed in noll-position.
@rawstarmusic we never aim to OVER stretch anything... just to go to the edge and breathe into it until it releases which sometimes takes patience.. we never muscle into any asana or posture ...there is always a balance, a union of the mind and body. A really good Yoga class is never what most people think it is... I highly recommend it. It always comes back to the brain and how you use it.
Very interesting video.I have recently been beginning all of my vocal sessions with a gentle neck and jaw massage that I got from Jamie Vendera's "Raise Your Voice" book, and it is really helping to release tension. I started to do this because I videoed myself singing and noticed that I sometimes do that singing out of the side of my mouth that Brett just talked about. I play the guitar and when you I look to the fretboard I kind of try to keep my voice going out forward which results in this.
Your right, if the body doesn't work - it won't work no matter what. Massage or get the body in working order first. I also took notice of the tip that the morning is when to do voice-work while relaxed and resonant. "The bone is connected to the"..ha ha you're a good psycho-acoustic psychologist if there is such a thing. I do chicken exercise in the morning to get chord-closure. elbows back, chest out for every short burst of sound. Looks silly and works wonders.
lol i can sing in my whistle register but only when i do this. my parents think im weird because i sit infront of my computer moving my jaw with my hand and making high pitched sounds.
This is actually a really, really useful tip. Even if you don't really feel like you have jaw tension, it's a good idea to do stuff like this at least once a week.
It's weird actually, because my choir teacher wanted me to sing with a really low larynx (an almost throaty sound) and this morning even with the edgy "aa" I was having trouble getting sufficient closure in my head voice, but after doing this for thirty seconds (vocalizing while wiggling the jaw) my head voice is actually fuller and not at all breathy. Odd how that works, isn't it?
Right on with your info re: TMJ - as a massage therapist with a focus on Chirodontics & Cranio-Sacral, I concur completely.
Releasing the Temporal Mandibular Joint can change the bio mechanics of the entire body - and of COURSE the voice is our AUDIBLE litmus test : )

I love singing success. I'm ecstatic to see a holistic approach to singing!
As a massage therapist and singer, I'm so delighted to see someone else making the correlation.
I've noticed a change and freedom with certain modalities. I love cranial sacral. :]
