This recording actually predates the NEBRASKA recording sessions. According to Bruce's book SONGS, "Vietnam" was a song-in-progress before he re-titled the song "Born In The USA". The finished version of "Born..." on TRACKS is the version recorded for but left off of what became NEBRASKA. This version also sounds like it may have been influenced by Jimmy Cliff's song "Vietnam". During this time period, Bruce was getting into Jimmy Cliff. (That's how he discovered Cliff's "Trapped".)
I am not a big fan of Springsteen, but I do respect the man's work. And Nebraska is a beautiful album, probably his masterpiece. If only he recorded more albums that way.
Me too, Nebraska is the only Springsteen album I'll have in my house. Proper soul (yes, I know it's not Soul, but you know what I mean). Like a white Leadbelly.
@llanbo man there is a lot of soul in this album. Since commenting however, I have delved into other albums. He is just an amazing artist. Truly underrated or mainstream overrated.
this great like so many of his tracks there should just a massive boxset of all his demos and outtakes they done with bob dylan and the boss is much more important

Yeah, I'm not a Bruce Springsteen fan at all, but I have loads of genuine appreciation for him as an artist and that's because THIS MAN IS REAL.
He does things for the music and only for the music. So, I have great respect for him.
*LOL I just heard him stop and turn the page. Funny!

@sleepyduo37 I highly recommend Tunnel of Love, in particular Two Faces, Brilliant Disguise and One Step Up.

@silverfencer I have discovered a lot more springsteen since then. His cover of Vigilante Man is just like this album.

@sleepyduo37 Really? Have to check that out. I just picked up a documentary 'Tales of a working man' and I highly recommend that mate

Without Dylan, Bruce wouldn't be the boss, he would sound so much different.

Jungleland is a good torrent site for Bruce stuff, go to google and search for "Jungleland torrent site" and pick the top one.

the first four lines of this song are the same as the opening first four lines in bruceS song SHUT OUT THE LIGHTS
radionowhere2008 3 years ago 5
There's a line or two a minute in that were rewritten a little for 'Born In The USA'.
johnny576375 3 years ago
@radionowhere2008 shut out the light exactly. another line that would later be used in Born In The USA. The Boss is a genius.
