The avant-garde metal group Fantomas [feat. Mike Patton (Faith No More), Buzz Obsborne (The Melvins), Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle), and Dave Lombardo (Slayer)] recorded an excellent version of this tune on their album 'The Director's Cut.'
Every week I would wait to hear the soundtrack from this show and every year since it would pop up from the depths of my soul triggered by the loss, the turmoil, the pain through my life. Weird is the other from this show that engulfs emotion that sometimes pulls at the heartstrings and buries thoughts deep into darkness.
I remember this tv show and how much I loved it. BUT.....it was the music that I could never get out of my head. Here I am listening to it again and loving it just as I did -- years ago. Thanks.
I used to watch One Step Beyond when I was a kid. The music was so scary and erie, I couldn't go to sleep, having nightmares. This is the kind of music I think of when I look at our Adminstration and Congress, as well as Wall Street, our Banking Industry, and the Insurance Industry. I get about as much comfort from them.
I finally found the music that used to send me into a frenzy. I can still see myself screaming to my mother and father to make it stop. I'd put my hands over my ears and run in circles sobbing. Id hide under the desk!! My parents would just stare at me like I was a nutcase. JUST SHUT OFF THE MUSIC PLEASE!!!! I'm very pleased to have found it but I dont want to listen to it anymore. Thank you!!
Actually, his name was John Newland, 'tomboy'. Prior to "ONE STEP BEYOND", he directed various episodes of "THE LORETTA YOUNG SHOW" (and occasionally co-starred with her)- so his series could be considered a supernatural version of her anthology.
this music vividly transports me back to a big black & white box TV -my brothers and me on the carpet, 3 feet in front of it. The soundtrack make you feels like you are floating, alone in the cold dark universe but you hang on by a fist with an ache in your heart...
When I was a kid I loved this show and loved being scared by it. The music from this show was and still is the scariest I ever heard. Try putting it on in a dark room!
@hankyhoyo I was a about 5 or 6 when they used to run this show on TV as part of Alcoa Presents. Had the heebies for days and I think I just brought 'em back.
This theme amongst other avents open a world to me,that even though 40 years of study has not reviled, and yet in me there seems somthing calling a perpose a derection othere thing that have happen have proven something good at the end of the tunnel of darkness and fear this evoked the beging but what the unknown from an inheritor
Harry Lubin also wrote the scores [and theme] for "THE LORETTA YOUNG SHOW" (1953-'61) as well, recording some of those cues for a 1959 Decca LP; "Weird" was first composed and used for a dream sequence in Loretta's "Feeling No Pain" episode in April 1955. Several of Lubin's cues for her series were also reused on "ONE STEP BEYOND" (i.e. the "Indian" motif of "I Remember the Rani" [May, '55]).
I thought the same thing but apparently it's not. Here is what it says on the album cover.
"...To achieve the unique character of his 'music from another world', Mr. Lubin augmented this brilliant group of musicians with specially selected instruments. In combination with the Symphoniker you will hear the accordian, the novachord, a most unusual coloratura voice, and a new electronic instrument called the trautonium..." I assume this "trautonium" is the Theremin sounding instrument.—David

I remember this music from long ago. When this music started to play you knew something spooky was going to happen. Still gives me the creeps.

Extraordinary, unearthly, fantastic music. Takes me back in time and to my 17th birthday. Thanks for hosting this.

This theme is fairly prevalent in the Outer Limits episode "Wolf 359", also written by Lubin.

@billbadford Wolf 359 is one of the closest stars but there are no planets there as depicted in the outer limits episode

@hankyhoyo - In a dark room! NO WAY. I agree with you 100%, this is the scariest music I've ever heard too.

@fromthesidelines --Of course, host John Newman has passed (he was a very interesting individual). Great true documented series.

The creepiest track of this record is titled "Weird" and it has the whole spirit of the series.

I agree! I also have "Weird" on my channel too.—David
