  • the first was sunk then the second was burned when the engines overheated so the union burned it to keep it out of confederate hands

  • I thought the Confederates built the one with a rotaiting cannon not the union. but then again rednecks don't have that kind of technology, lol jk maby.

  • no the union had the turrents.

  • And the Hunley did sink the Housatanic that's for sure. HOWEVER, it sank twice in the work up to the attempt drowning all hands, and drowned the last time too.

    Succesful?? I dunnoo....

  • Wrong on all counts.

neither the Union nor the COnfederates invented ironclads. The French did, in 1858. See: The Gloire.

  • @salama2000 Not counting koreans in their war aganist Japan invasion 1592-98... the turtle ships of the korean fleet were reputed to be clad with metal....Iron specifically but that is in dispute though it is agreed the covered roof like top deck of the turtleships had iron spikes on iron sheet to prevent boarders.. The Japanese did have records of demands for iron to cover ships to fight aganist the Korean Turtles that mounted broadside cannon and smoke projector..

  • They had a gun turret but we had many more guns on our clads because they were longer than the union ones. Remember we invented the iudea, not the Union. They took credit for our confederate invention. They also never admit we built the first successful military submarie, the CSS Hunley

  • no you did not. It was the french. Then the english. And as for the Hunley, it sank twice before going into action. Plus on top of that it sank again after her only action.

  • Yes, that is a common misconception. The union tryed to destroy the Merrimack so that the confederates couldn't use it- so they burned it. The confederates then cut off the charred top and used the bottom as the hull of the ship and then made the top of iron. Since it wasn't technically the ship it previously was, the confederates named it after the state it was made in- virginia.

  • Not to be picky, but it wasn't the "Merrimack"... it was the CSS Virginia... built on the old hull of the Merrimack.

  • Very well done, especially the smoke effects.

  • I thought ironclads were steam engine tanks.
