Sometimes less more! Essentially we're time keepers. We play what's needed for the music. It's about making the song feel good. Definately a good guy and musician.
Usually I'm blown away. Not so much here. very limiting, cold, angry style, he is choking his toms w/those very heavy thick black heads, he crashes all day on the RIDE cymbal. No warm funkiness at all. Technically, I'm sure he has chops but this just isn't fulfilling at all.
@ConsumingFire39 Hmmmmmm.... Judging from this ^^^, and a name like "ConsumingFire"... are you really pretending like you're hard to read? No I am not a drummer, but I am a better musician than you, and I know Chris Pennie makes shit music compared to Adam Deitch.
@KrummyBear "Consumingfire" has nothing to do with a band... You should not speculate on things you have no way of knowing. How do you know you are a better musician than me?... You don't. I actually am a drummer and a am probably more qualified to distinguish a more skilled and better drummer from someone who does not play. I would not argue with a good guitarist who the more skilled guitarist was between two people...
@ConsumingFire39 Wait...so you listen to Chris Pennie...your handle is ConsumingFire (which I never claimed was a band, just indicative of your attitude)... and you DON'T like shitty bro metal? I promise you i've played with and listened to more drummers. I mean, I look over to the right, and have a hard time finding a drummer that ISN'T better than Pennie... Billy Cobham? Dave Weckl? Not only do they have more tech skill, they have better touch, and make better music that has more groove.
@KrummyBear If you looked at my favorites you would realize that I have several different musicians in my favorites. I really do not like the style of music Chris Pennie used to play but I respect his ability. Adam Deitch plays with hip hop bands and is a complete wigger. Pennie has the core and chops to play any style of music he wants to. There are other videos of him playing with great touch and groove.
@ConsumingFire39 Hip hop? Really? RJD2 and Break Science are not hip hop. Just because Talib Kweli drops one track does not make it hip hop. He is a funk drummer who plays with some of the best funk groups out there. Including his first group Lettuce (better than anything Pennie ever has done or will do), John Scofield Uber Jam Band, Average White Band, Dr. Claw.... What was it you said about not talking about shit you know nothing about?
@KrummyBear You could argue that Cobham and Weckl make better music but they do NOT have more technical skill, at least not as far as hands go. This is also one of the performances I have seen from Pennie and the drums are mic'd horribly. Of course, you are commenting on something you cannot do and could not distinguish as well. I would never argue with you about which man blows a horn the best. Then again, I would never actively search for a video of that.
@ConsumingFire39 No... they really do... I bet you would say Antonio Sanchez doesn't have more tech skill... and I would then tell you to give up on music. Look up Pat Metheney Lone Jack... Frankly... all accomplished jazz drummers are better than Pennie.... Yes, I can distinguish, and you saying you don't appreciate horns just proves you know nothing.
@KrummyBear No, Lopez does not. You do realize that Pennie has a very strong jazz background, right? I feel like you are judging him off of one video and have no idea how varied he is. I never said, "I don't appreciate horns", stop putting words in my mouth. If you are not a drummer, I am infinitely better andand much more knowledgeable when it comes to playing. Just because you play with jazz drummers does not mean you are a good source.
@ConsumingFire39 I've seen Deitch play 3 times now, twice with lettuce, and once with Break Science... His timing and feel were phenomenal both times, as well as highly intricate. Anyone can learn to play straight and really loud at all times... It takes musicianship to do what Deitch does, you can hear it in the quality of music he makes with people... Pennies music is mindless and boring.
@KrummyBear You realize that is because Pennie is playing thate style of music. The man can and has played everything. Physically and mentally, Pennie can do anything Deitch can on the kit but not the other way around. Again, if you like Deitch's music more than Pennie, that is one thing. As far as individual ability and technical skill go, Deitch is not in the same class as Pennie. Personally, I cannot stand seeing white people being pretenders in music and wearing flat bill caps.
@ConsumingFire39 How is he pretending to be "in music". He's a fantastic musician who has his own sense of style. Just because you are a close minded bigot, it doesn't make his style any less valid. Not only are you completely incorrect, you're not even attempting to substantiate you claims. It takes far more touch to do what Deitch does, which requires more mastery of your instrument. Deitch playing Nyack? Takes more skill than Pennie playing this shit, that's for sure.
@monsterRoFthEmisT no, the first song isn't Dillinger, but you are close. It is the song Back Of My Hand from Chris's side project band Return To Earth. The album it is on is called Automata, and it's a great album. Highly recommend it!!!
Pissy Dillinger fanboys coming to a video to bitch about their drummer leaving are fucking idiots. Just because he is playing something simpler and not doing everything possible in one song doesn't mean that it's not as good. I like illinger and Coheed and totally respect his decision. Real Dillinger fans would respect it also
@xxbss4lifexx I don't see why they freak. He was in Dillinger forever, i'm sure he wanted to take his music somewhere different. Dillinger has had some good talent come through. Why would you want to listen to the same stuff over and over when you can get some fresh takes?
Everyone is asking about the snare, but what are those tom batters? The only black evans heads i've seen are the Hydraulics which weren't my favorite heads ever.
@avedisdrummer989 Let me say this first, I think Thomas Pridgen is the best drummer alive. He is sick beyond belief and not many can even come close to what he can do. Having said that, he only works in certain situations, like high energy rock or technical jazz. The thing about Theodore is that he's one of the most versatile drummers out there and he can add brilliance to whatever style he has to play. That is where Thomas lacks because he is still young and learning song application.
@MPrint666 oh I totally agree. Theodore was incredible, his feel is undeniable, and he has some serious chops. I'm just thinking in terms of Pridgen v. Penny, I'm much happier with their placement. Pridgen brings this chaotic energy to Volta that I don't think Penny has. all around I would much rather have seen Theodore stay with Volta. I followed him into One Day As a Lion, but it's just not the same.
The song is "Back Of My Hand" by "Return to Earth" of the album "Automata" and that other instrumental is another "Return to Earth" song i think but don't know name.
Gotta love chris. I do kind of agree with a few of you saying that C&C doesnt let him play to his full potential, but when you think about it, every great drummer thats in a great band is in that situation. I mean when i listen to rush, neal isnt playing every single thing he knows in every single song! Give coheed a break guys, they cant please everybody.
just so you guys know none of this is coheed. chris chose this music to demonstrate specific techniques and showcase his abilities at a drum clinic... the "modern drummer festival"
Sold himself out? How? Because he left probably a top 10 of your favourite bands in Dillinger Escape Plan to join Coheed? A band you may not even like? How's that selling out? He's kicked arse in every drumming pattern he does, regardless of who he's playing for.
damn, chris has his snare positioned over the bass drum, and the hi hat is a little over the snare. his toms and snare are at the same height pretty much
@mrmartyo Pretty sure the heads are evans Onyx, supposedly really fucking good for snares......and they definitely work well for pennie with his toms.
@zzzzzushi why not? its more comfortable for him, i do the same thing, there is no set perfect way to construct your drum kit, every kit is different and will be different to suit the individual player
He sounds great

why did he put his left pedal on the double bass on the left of the high hat?
zzzzzushi 1 year ago
@zzzzzushi so he could get his hi hat closer to the 10 o'clock position on his snare

I think his toms should be tuned to have a more resonanating tone. It would fit his playing style much more.
