people talking about U2 ripping off the Damned - what about Spandau Ballet - Hadley admits they were his favourite band - listen to 'Gold' and close your eyes and imagine it's the Damned - go on.
STRAWBERRIES TOUR 1983 what a tour also known as dingwalls best damned gigs id been to for years then they went poppy ,but boy did they do well long live the damned and all who sail on her lol
Superb song, although not as good as most of the tracks on DDD & MGE. Will see them for the umpteenth time Aug 21st in sunny Saltash (Cornwall - UK). Still don't quite understand why I love so much after 30 years after buying History of the World P1, but they are my favourite punk band by a country mile, although Sub Humans are a close second!!
1st band I ever saw - Strawberries tour, Oct' 82, Manchester Apollo - this line up too, with the addition of 2 leggy-lovely-dancing nuns....top gig!
As far as post-James era line ups go, this is the best, imo. Paul Gray's bass playing is fucking sublime, as tuneful & melodic as it is rhythmical. With him, Scabies & the Captain going full throttle, it went well beyond punk rock, into free form psychedelia at times (eg - Therapy), or when reigned in, even mellow pop (eg - The Pleasure & The Pain).
@RedBryn think i went to that one,at the back of the stage was church windows ,and the ladys where dressed as nuns, was sat on the left of the stage next to the captin ,top gig, seems like agers ago.
@godders7766 Yeah, that's right. Me & my mates had front row tickets & were stood right in front of The Captain & the 'nuns'. I remember him getting his kit off after about the 2nd number & spending the rest of the gig stark bollock naked, so my mate gobbed on his todger! A great baptism to live music for me, that gig was.....fucking mental & totally unforgetable : - )
Haha, on Damned videos there always seems to be arguments over peoples' images and who stole what from who. Would it be so hard to believe that more than one pair of sunglasses exists, or that white hair dye (not shown here I guess!) is available in different shops, etc? Haha.
It wasn't on the 'strawberries for fucking pigs' album of which a limited edition was released with a strawberry scent on the vinyl mid rift.
It was an EP called 'friday the thirteenth' with Billy Bad Breaks/The Citadel and Disco Man. Just know because the version had got 'needled out' with plays.
The Damned rule and come back to Brum soon - we need you!
@ILiveOnMyBoat You speak the truth...... The ep was on NEMS for some reason - I have a feeling they went from stiff (DDD / MFP) to chiswick (MGE / Black album) to bronze (strawberries) then NEMS (the EP) and then onwards to gothdom elsewhere....
I have a feeling that bronze collapsed or was taken over
@Wayzgoosey Yeah, then after NEMS, they had a stint with their own label for a while - 'Damned Records' : only 2 releases - the 'Live In Newcastle' LP & the 'Thanks For The Night' single. Up until MCA signing them in 86, they had remained on a succesion of independent labels for 10 years - unlike any of the other big name Punk bands of the 76 era. I'm sure they'd 've jumped at the chance of signing to a major label sooner, but the poor fuckers never had any luck!
It's on the damned album Strawberries. Great album. Really great album. One of my favorite Damned albums. Also it was the last Damned LP with Captain Sensible on guitar for quite a while.
Vanian/Sensible/Gray/Jugg/Scabies was the best lineup. Strawberries and The Black Album are the Damned's best albums. And also songs released between those two albums are good too.
I agree. The Black Album is their post-punk masterpiece, Strawberries is a close second. And some of that carried over into Phantasmagoria, which is also very good.
The Paul Gray line-up is a personal favorite in terms of EVERYTHING: looks, output, color, the Captain's onstage rapport with the audience, the guitar solos, and the T shirts of that period.
The whole White Rabbit to Generals era was always the best for me.
I'd like to thank all you bootleggers for giving me some of the funniest moments of my life.
Part of the magic of this band was the things Sensible said on stage, and the umpteen different versions of Looking At You that got me into the guitar....CHEERS!
Please do not gas this band, they are only having fun !!
