  • Anybody ever notice that when the camera pulls back at the end of "All For The Best" you can see that they are dancing at the top of the Trade Center towers? Scary. But a very good movie.

  • I can't believe this isn't on the DVD

  • i cant believe i have to do this for a theatre production, its alright but it's not my kind of film, i'm 13 thats probably why.

all together there are 32 of us, and godspell only has 13 people, so we all have sqeezed in parts

  • Godspell rated G (G for Godspell)! <3

  • @megarouge2001 You mean North?

  • to Swimmer1103-

I am going to be directing this for the opening production of the 75th anniversary season of the Mariemont Players, Inc, in Cincinnati, and would love to communicate with her about the original production. I saw this in Cincy's Shubert Theater in 1973 for 8 performances and was part of the directing team at Purcell H.S. I believe that we were the first amateur contract awarded for this show in 1975. I can be contacted at mikemorehead71@yahoo.com if she would be willing.

    Thanks

  • @mikemorehead71: Good luck w/ your production!

  • i think my school is gonna do this for a play...

  • God is Love.

  • It was very good. Victor Garber is hot!

  • Anyone else think it's kinda funny that it's rated 'G'?

...cause it begins with a G?

    Heh....

Yeah, I need to get to bed. XD

  • I saw a trailer/commercial for this movie on TV back when I was a kid in the 70's, but I don't remember what year. It included a clip of the crucifixion on the fence, which as a child, I thought was really scary and made me not want to see the movie (even if it was rated G!) It took me nearly 30 years to finally see the whole thing, and now that I have -- it's amazing!

  • @Jolly4jc I saw this film on TV back in the day. They show this film during religious holidays.

  • I vaguely remember seeing on broadcast TV in the middle of the night on the weekend...like 79-80?I just wonder want the Hannity's and Malkin's of today think of this...would they great,or think it's another example of liberal corruption?

  • Robin Lamont is just...well...great. Her energy steals every scene.

  • robin lamont is in this movie and she is my mom

  • Cool!

  • That's cool.

She sings Day By Day one of the best ways I've heard.

    X's

  • I like her the best.

  • @swimmer1103: AWESOME! I love your mom in this movie! I'm an actress in my hometown of Philly, & I've always wanted to portray her in the play version of Godspell, since my name is also "Robyn" & I LOVE her song "Day By Day"! Your mom was one of my favorites!

  • Comment removed

  • @swimmer1103 - Your mom is a doll! I just love this movie and her singing made it all the better. Please tell her for me :D

  • @swimmer1103 Wish her a Happy' Mom's Day from all of her fans!

Is she still an ADA in Westchester?

  • JEFFREY IS AWESOME sorry i was jeffrey hes so kewl

  • I love this movie as well, I think the 2 must movies for Christians is this and The Passion of The Christ, You couldn't find 2 movies more different but they both make up what it is to be a Christian.

My fav songs is a 3 way tie with Prepare ye the way, day by day, and Woe to you

  • The Passion of the Christ was nothing more than a snuff film. A gratuitous gore fest created by a man who is so insanely immersed in his cult-like branch of Catholicism that he can't get past his own ego. That's why Mel is getting a divorce. His wife got sick of him telling her she was going to Hell because she wasn't a member of his cult.

  • i keep thinking about it because of the corruption that i have learned about for so long. I mean last year we learned about the ten commandments and stuff and yes, but compare that to today, and it is nothing like it is. I never saw the Passion, nor did I want to, it seemed like Mel Gibson begging to be beaten up by critics and bishop's alike. Mel Gibson is a stupid S.O.B who deserves to have a divorce, because god-forbid his wife has a brain.

  • @megarouge2001: Think what you want, but for me, I saw it that way. The Romans @ that time were brutal & they took pleasure in the suffering of others. Do you really think that Christ only died w/ push-pin like wounds in his hands & feet, a tiny gash under his breast & little paper-cut like marks on his back as depicted in most religious art throughout the ages? Do you really think Christ died virtually bloodless? No. Jesus was hearty. It would take a LOT to bring him down & this did it.

  • @megarouge2001: Trust me... he didn't die w/ red crepe paper streamers tied to & dangling from his wrist... that's for sure.

  • @robynsegg actually, there's no reason to believe any part of the christ myth.

  • @megarouge2001 It's unfortunate to see seemingly reasonable people, such as you, be excessively critical of other people such as Mel. Now, I'm not fan of his, but it takes more discretion, than you’ve displayed, to not depreciate the authenticity film-making of the Passion of the Christ. Moreover, I'd imagine you wouldn't want me to limit you to the reduced version of yourself that I've experienced in this public arena. It’s harmful, to ones sense of perception, to be harsh.

  • @megarouge2001

Wow so are you not a Christian? I just assumed you were for uploading this

  • @VaiTrooper I am. I wasn't when I made that comment.

  • @megarouge2001

Oh wow :o thats awesome. God is so good!

  • @VaiTrooper Yep, He sure is. It took me a long time to realize that God is God, and His followers don't necessarily represent Him well. I realized I was an atheist because I hated what PEOPLE were doing in God's name, not because of anything God did. It was kind of like hating Elvis because his fan club were dicks.

  • @megarouge2001

I know right! Alot of the biggest hypocrites on this Earth are so called "Christians"

  • this movie rocks

  • I own this movie and show every year at Easter to my Faith Formation class. This past week on of the kids wanted to know what the plot was. I told her it was based on the Gospel of St. Matthew and the plot was Jesus' life.

  • i loooooooooooooooovvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee this movie!!! i just saw it for the first time last sunday and i fell in love!!!! it's officially my favorite musical of all time

  • OMG same. my drama teacher showed it to our class the other day cause we're doing it as our musical and i fell in love with it instantly.

  • I love this MOVIE!!!!!

    WHOOOO

  • lol my school performed this play and it was awsome! lol it was pretty good:)

  • I own this movie, and it's my all time favorite. I watch it every week. I wouldn't be alive without this musical. I saw it the first time when I was six. And Victor Garber actually looks like he does now, exept with big puffy brown hair.

  • Have you ever seen Eli Stone. that was my introduction to Victor Garber.

It is a great show about Faith da Faith Da Faith

You gotta see it to get that

  • fav song: bless the lord. IT'S SO COOL!!!

  • This the tv spot for the movie. I saw this and I was confused big time but I will soon understand it. This is rated G because of the christian aspect for all ages. great trailer/tv spot, good movie! :-)

  • When I saw this on Television the annoucer said "This Movie Is Suitible for Family viewing". They aired it during holidays(Thanksgivig to Christmas and Easter)

  • lmao!

Our school musical this year is godspell!

I prolly no ever word from the movie i've seen it so many times! C=

  • Esse musical me faz chorar até hoje!

    Lindo demais.

    Sibelia/Brasil

  • This latter was a hell of a lot better than the Webber musical.

  • This was the best film ever made,it changed my life, the soundtrack STILL brings tears....SO beautifully done and scripturally accurate, even tho all the Baptist Preachers hated it at the time.

This was "radical" for our day! But a beautiful film, I still love Victor Garber!

  • It's hard reconciling Jesus Christ with Jack Bristow....

  • do non-christians like this movie?

  • This total heathen loves it!

  • You will never see another GREAT movie like this one come out of Hollywood.

  • I don't know, i see either 1 of 2 things either happening, Either we are on the verge of a new spiritual religious revival where we will see some more movies like this that proclaim the good news and what Jesus tought us and how we can change the world with his help or we are fastly approaching armageddon.

Either way would be God's will, but I really think it is an either or thing

  • A religious revival may happen, but I doubt it will be Christian. Christianity has become so perverted by politics that it's not anything like what it was supposed to be. I have renounced it myself.

  • Comment removed

  • why does armageddon have to be induced by humans?

  • My Cosuin is going to be in the upcoming Broadway Revival production of it opening in October. She also did the show at Papermill. Sara Chase.

  • Wow, I would love to see some footage of that if it were possible.

  • really? what is she going to do in it?

  • oh it got canceled

  • That is like the best movie eveeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrr!!!!!!!! Who cares if it's 35 years old!!! We did the play @ a summer camp I went to. It was soooooooo fun!!!!!!!!!

  • A Little Trivia:

This movie was released in 1973.5 months later, Jesus Christ Superstar was released.

Yeah people knew that but Superstar was More Of A Susccess than Godspell.

    But Both Movies ROCK !!!

  • they did this at my school, but i didnt get to see it but they did a clip at chapel and it was amazing

  • im doing this play at my skool!!!!!!!!!!

  • same

  • I just saw this for the first time and just loved it. I grew up on two things. Church (roman Catholic) and musicals. This was one of the first musicals I saw as a teen and loved it.

Can't believe that is Victor Garber though...wow

  • Same here! (About Victor Garber) I really did a double-take, because I was a huge fan of Godspell in the '70's, and always liked Victor's acting since seeing him in Annie, Titanic, and other shows. Never realized they were the same guy, until I saw this again for the first time in 30 years. How about that demonstrative 'fro he wore!

  • I love this movie! My only complaint though is the fact that it did not portray Christ's resurrection at the end. I don't know why that part was left out.

  • thats crap because his resurrection was real!

  • His Birth & Miracles wasn't shown either, doy. The whole point of the artistic expression of movie was that the words of Jesus Christ is alive in all of us even as we go about our daily lives. That's why the city was abandoned @ the start & close of the film, from His baptism to His death.

  • I just explained that to the last person.

  • Re: omission of the resurrection. Many people in the '70's thought it undermined Jesus' claim to deity. I really don't think that is the case. If you listen to the monologue in the intro (spoken by Garber), the story very clearly establishes His claim to deity.

I think the writers (Schwartz and Tebelak) chose to focus on his ministry, what kind of a man he was, and what he taught us about how to break the cycle of futility in our lives and violence in the world.

    Do you think we learned?

  • ahh your sooo welcome. i just needed to give this film the justice it needed. its just soo amazing after you look at the crazy costumes and so on. it felt like i was really there you look past all the craziness and the messege and the music is sooo profound. it moves the heart, like no other movie did for me, except maybe for jesus christ superstar and jesus of nazzareth.. take care and god bless!

  • I saw this for the first time today and I love it.

  • I saw it today too. I loved it and I cried like a baby even though I'm Big Daddy.

It was a VERY seminal film in my development as a Wondeful Born Again Believer back in the day.

    Big Daddy

Ps They really need to do a 2008 version - minus the afros/clown paint. lol!

  • to be serious here... this movie saved my ife and my faith. i was going down a bad road to nowhere and needed someone to turn to. i needed help. the lowest part of my life. i was lost. i saw this movie in the 70's when i was a kid but it really didnt mean anything to me back then. i came across it one day again and that was gods way of saving me. i watched, heard the message and lived for christ. this is the first movie that ever made me cry. seeing this movie was life changing indeed!

    LOVE!

  • i meant to give you a thums up sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry SORRY!!!!!!

  • Thanks for posting this. The trailer wasn't included on the DVD so I never saw it till now.

  • I remember watching this on TV in the late 70's. My mom went out and bought the album the next day. Good Memories! Also, If you're a fan of Godspell, you will enjoy this zealous, you're all going to burn in hell, guilt trip of a webpage I found called, Godspell: The Ultimate Blasphemy. Enjoy!

  • Whoa! I wasn't promoting the website! I found it so ludacrist that I thought you would all enjoy a good laugh.

  • It's not like that's a bad thing, just because of 9/11 doesn't mean that they were being disrespectful, really I don't care! It was than, this is now, If someone was saying stuff like "LOL The Twin towers are gay" I would be slightly offended.

  • OMG! It starts with a shot of them on the North Tower of the World Trade Center!

  • Ryn, yes, you're right! The Twin Towers (which were just about to be completed at the time of filming) feature prominently in one of the musical numbers.

  • Remember this movie was from about 1973 ...... just about 30 years before 9/11 .... when they did the trailer (they meaning the producers or whomever is responsible for the movie trailer) obviously wouldn't know about 9/11 ....... so what's with OMG! ????

  • OMG was for the fact that I saw the movie when it first came out and have not seen this film since. I completely forgot about the scene on top of the World Trade Center. I was in New York City at the time that they were shotting this film. Just never suspected to see (remember) the shot of the WTC roof.

  • Yeah, they conclude the number singing 'it's all for the best' while dancing on the world trade center.

  • Ha what an amazing trailer that movie was so corney and funny

  • What a sweet movie... they dont make them like this anymore.

  • Too bad, they should.

  • Victor Garber?

Wasn't he in Highway To Heaven and Little House on the Prarie?

  • that would be Michael Landon, Victor Gatber was in Alias.

  • but his 'assistant' - the bearded one, I'm sure the credits said 'Victor Garber.'

The one he originally met on the road hitchiking (in the beginning credits).

  • thats Victor French

  • Hi Maz, Victor Garber plays Jesus (with the mighty big red afro). He is best known for "Alias" these days. The bearded fellow in the clip is David Haskell. He originated the John/Judas role on Broadway. He passed away in the 90s. I believe.

  • oh thanks...I thought it was meant that the bearded one was Victor Garber-

Great film, thanks for posting the clip.

  • Why isn't the DVD of "Godspell" available in Europe? I am frustrated!

  • One of my favourite..... I remember watching this in school back in the '70's when it first came out!!!! Gonna go searching for the DVD

  • wow... i always do the summer play at my town, and there thinkin about doin godspell jr. and this really helped!! thank you and ~nya~

  • also, did this come out on video tape cause i wanna watch it. . . it's o.k if u don't know though. lol!!!

  • Hi Mew! The movie is available on VHS and DVD, yes. It's really fun. It came out in the early seventies.

You might have trouble finding it, but I have seen it at Blockbuster. Go to my other vid, the We Beseech Three music video to see more clips from the movie.

  • the announcer sounded like he was trying to sell luandry detergent

  • Funny. Good call.

  • Grrreaaattt!!!

  • ProVoz, I actually do have that. I may sell it on eBay soon. I'll give you a heads-up if I do. :-)

  • Nice catch. Anyone have the MAKING OF GODSPELL ? Rumor is that there is a VHS or DVD copy of the making of this movie.

  • Where did you find this Trailer? It's super... Thanks for posting!

  • Hunter, I bought it on ebay a couple years ago. It was on 16mm film then. I had it put on VHS, and then put it on the computer.
