  • Economically, this was one of the worst periods for Memphis.

  • The 80s was indeed a sucky period for my city of Memphis. Downtown was an absolute deadzone at that time.

  • Reganomics *smh*...This Bush era isn't too far behind it, it might have passed it.

  • So I guess what we need is Obamanomics?

  • I'll take that over a third term from Bush!

  • It's a joke. But to each their own.

  • Okay...lol...So to answer...YES we could really use some Obamanomics, although another one of those stimulus checks wouldn't hurt.

  • Well guess what, Playboy, we'll get Obamanomics!

  • @leshaunfossett

Anyone who would say the the mid-1980s was "one of the worst periods for Memphis" has a very poor grasp of history. Federal Express was growing very rapidly. International Paper chose the city for its HQ in 1986. Republic Airlines created a hub in 1983. The city became a force in distribution and logistics. Downtown, especially Beale St., started to come back to live.

It was an exciting time for Memphis, especially compared to the dreadful 1970s...or today, for that matter.

  • wow i had no idea joe birch has been around that long. he looks the same today

  • Technology has come a long way

  • Dam this was 1 year before I was born. Dave Brown still looks the same.

Got a live shot of the traffic in downtown Memphis!!!

  • For those who don't know what the DTMC is, it stands for "Danny Thomas Memphis Classic". It's now the FedEx/St. Jude Classic.

  • Of course, Steve Shular is now with the Shelby County Sheriff's Dept.
