  • i have reported aircrashinvest to google for the lies in this clip. i sugest everyone else who hates this bullshit do the same. from a proud New Zealander

  • Aircrashinvest your a wanka, The managment of AirNZ lied and covered up to truth at a royal commision of enquiry, and after all these years nobodys who like to think they are no-alls come up with this rubbish, even rananim3 is full of shit, it angers everyone in New Zealand who remember this dredful day that such inappropiate crap appears on utube.

  • The blame is shared between the Pilot in Command, the airline and the CAA.The Pilot flew below MSA using INS to make an approach to the Sound. The airline changed the coordinates of McMurdo the night before and didnt tell the crew. And the CAA allowed DC-10 pilots to go to Antarctica with no previous visit required and no whiteout briefing.I think CAA and Air NZ are most at fault but PIC must also be included in the reckoning as PIC must always know where he is when below MSA.

  • Not offensive. It was a computer recreation of an accident.

  • disgraceful . there are several books you may want to read on the subject of this accident. the enquireis have not finshed yet , as we ( staff , relatives & media ) wish to weed the REAL culprits out. this video is , as the others say , disrespectful , and offensive

  • Yuck. Cheap, nasty and obviously done in what, 1 hour on FSX? I wouldn't normally mind, but this is so ridiculous and uninformative that it is almost idiotic. Shame on you, this is very disrespectful and offensive to all the Erebus victims.

  • My vote added that this is offensive, ridiculous, ill-informed and should be removed. There is very little that you have put into this that is even approaching fact and truth, starting with the statement in your description that the plane hit Mt Erebus because of poor conditions. Absolute rubbish.

  • As someone who worked for the airline at the time and who had friends on board, this is a cheap and nasty insult. What you have posted here is sickening and tries to simplify an horrific accident.

  • why weren't they flying high enough!

  • Except for the graphics, which are wonderful, this animation is complete rubbish. There was no pilot error involved, but a computer programming error, and there was never any indication from the CVR that the pilots saw Erebus, swore, or anything of the like. This tragedy may not have affected you personally (I'm not you so I don't know), but for crying out loud, have some respect for the people that were affected and get your facts right before doing another piece of inaccurate garbage.

  • This video is inaccurate. The CVR indicated that the pilots never saw the mountain before the impact. No-one on the flight deck said "oh shit" as indicated in the video. The application of Go-Around power was a standard DC-10 procedure and was initialted by the pilots on when they heard the GPWS warning alarm. While the graphics are good, with such an important event in our history you can expect that people will take offence if facts are changed which change the context of the event.

  • @Sickkboy78 Also, the plane departed for antarctica from Christchurch, not Auckland.

  • What so offensive about this video?

  • @KHDND It's showing what exactly happened which for some may be interesting but for others a reminder of what they lost.

  • My great uncle was the second engineer on board, Nicholas Maloney. This video is very informative and probably not meant to offend but please don't create anything like this in the future.

  • Idiotic trash.

  • the transcript is offensive and incorrect

  • Except for the black boxes and the remains of all on board, the New Zeland authorities decided to leave the wreckage and unrecoverable pieces of the victims remains on the side of Mount Erebus. There is (I think) now a memorial not far from the site.

  • TE901 not ANZ901

  • the only thing i don't like about these videos is the pictures at the end

  • nice

  • WHOOP WHOOP

  • The info. on here is not entirely accurate. You've left out huge chunks of the CVR and what you've written is wrong anyway. I find this distasteful. If you're going to go through the trouble of simulating a tragic air crash that took the lives of 257 people, at least get it right.

  • He must be an Aussie then......

  • 237 passengers and 20 crew*

  • How did this thing collide with Mount Erebus? Mount Everest is at 29,000 and they're at 30,000 and not even in the area of the world of Mount Everest. How did they collide with this?

  • @boeing521 An incorrect flight plan was stored in the DC-10's computer, leading to a navigation error that directed the plane toward Mt. Erebus. Also, overcast conditions caused the crew to descend below authorized altitude. Other contributing factors were the whiteout conditions at the time of the flight and the crew's inexperience with flying the route in Antarctica. I found this information on an air disaster web site.

  • @and003 Oh....wow, bad error. Thanks for the info.

  • its nz so thank god !

  • @kagoshimadavid FUCK YOU

  • @kagoshimadavid Yeah well you are from Japan.. I guess what goes around comes around ay

  • @kagoshimadavid yeah? well when you build a nuclear power plant under a known faultline, then have an earthquake and a nuclear disaster- well thank god for us new zealanders- its japan- but hey i guess thats just the arrogant japanese attitude- its dangerous, but fuck it well do it anyway- who are they to tell us otherwise- then the shit happens and you turn around and ask for help- well fuck you asshole- you lost more people on mt fuji than we did on erebus so why dont you thank god for that.

  • I hate those rock-filled clouds. :-(

  • As a New Zealander i'm offended by the inaccuracies of this. I understand you meant good intentions, but please, get the facts right first.

  • Offenvsive to New zelanders it is a serious tradgedy which should not be taken lightly.

  • lol!! whoop whoop pull up!!

  • @craig06ful whoopwhoop who are you oh i hope you were on one of the planes that hit the twin towers u queer kunt

  • that's because boeing is the owner of MD

  • You guys know MD-11 belongs to McDonnell Douglas, but was made by Boeing?

  • Don't watch this video. It's fictitious.

  • That's like getting pissed at a news show for showing a CGI recreation of an event instead of actual footage. It should have been obvious from the second the video loaded that this was a simulation and nothing more. Honestly, what did you expect?

  • No what I mean is the "facts" presented in text are fictitious, and the quotes are not correct. Got it now?

  • Yep. And you are correct, the text is inaccurate in quite a few places actually.

  • ALL DIED?

  • This is lovely work of fiction! The plane was flying under Visual Flight Rules all the time and was not in cloud. They didn't see the mountain because the clouds they where flying under where white, the snow was white and the sea cliffs where hidden by white sea fog - The Capt responged calmly to the GPWS system and never swore (also the first indication of trouble was the GPWS) I'm not even sure that the plane was full, because these sightseeing trips where usually flown half full.

  • dc-10s are awesome. good point how could there be 20 your got captain first officer maybe a on board maintaince guy and some fligh attends so maybe 7. at the most.

  • It was not flying from Auckland, it was Christchuch and the flight number was TE901 not ANZ901. God bless all those who perished.

  • how the hell can a dc-10 have 20 crew members??

  • of course not. Antarctica has no air.

  • tool, if you read the comments properly they are all responses to other comments... I had a relative who died on this flight, so you shut the fuck up tosser....

  • BTW the rather creative script is accurate to a point, but the last few sentences are pure fabrication, and an insult to those who died on flight TE 901 (not ANZ901)... you should be wayyyy more respectful than this!! Shame on you.....

  • it happen during 1979.

  • ue mean the mountain is 30 000 feet ?

  • No but it is 30,000ft above sea level

  • then what was it crusing altitude ? you have any idea?

  • i would guess around FL350, but that doesnt mean that the mountain is 35,000 ft high it would just mean the mountain was 35,000ft above sea level. Its not like if you climbed the mountain then your would have to climb up 35,000ft. But he could of been flying a lot lower because it says that it was a sight seeing tour so he was probably down low so the people could see stuff well. But idk

  • you would guess FL350 ? i mean , i was asking , what was its crusing altitude ? i really need the correct info for what was its crusing altitude . well , i didn't say that the plane was not 30,000ft above sea lvl right ? oh my , i wouldn't want to climb a mountain so tall about 30,000 ft ? hehs , dude , i was only asking its crusing altitude .

  • I don't recall the FL but it was low because it was during the sightseeing phase of the flight... definitely not 350

  • cool but only looks pretty unrealistic and also i did a study of this at school

  • Who ever made this film is so factually incorrect that putting this kind of crap on you tube is just wrong. It was 257 on board all up, passengers & crew. The plane was in a white out, you obviously don't know what this means. They never saw the mountain. I lost my grandfather on this flight and this video is disrespectful !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the statistics are wrong 257 passengers and 20 crew is not a normal capacity for a DC-10 in fact i beileive that the plane was over capacitated

  • Laker Airways filled their planes with 345 passengers...

  • is it just me, or is every DC-10 a flying deathtrap???

  • no it's a death trap worst plane ever bult kinda like a a kamikazi ford pinto that flys

  • If you think the DC-10 is a death trap, try looking up the IL-62.

  • seems the same to me. I wonder how KLM can still use them in good consience :O

  • KLM uses MD11's, not DC10's... there would be very few flying DC10's around these days...

  • i still think FedEx still uses a couple Dc10s.

  • FedEx uses MANY DC-10s....although, most have been converted by Boeing to MD-10 specification...a glass cockpit that removes the need for a Flight Engineer. Despite all that...I still wouldn't set foot on a DC-10. But I'm biased...my grandfather was an engineer who worked for Lockheed and was heavily involved in the design of the L-1011, the DC-10's competitor. The DC-10 had many issues that were just plain careless on the part of MD. The L-1011 was a much better execution of the TriJet Concept.

  • Once they got the "small" problem of the cargo doors busting open in mid-flight, they were actually pretty reliable and safe. This particular incident was 100% CFIT pilot error, so you can't pin this one on the "D(eath) C(ruiser)-10"

  • Actually, it was not pilot error but a flight computer programming error...

  • @ginashina you're mistaking this one with the American Airlines 757 crash.

  • @sonicfan7 I'm not mistaking this for anything. The flight computer was programmed in error before the a/c even left Auckland. Originally the airline blamed it on pilot error but after a Royal Enquiry it was established that the airline had provided the aircraft with an incorrect flight program that essentially aimed it directly at Erebus, and then attempted to cover the error up. The pilots were unaware there was anything wrong as the a/c was in whiteout conditions at the time.

  • @ginashina

IMO the Royal Commission meant well, but its main conclusion flies in the face of established safety practice. On one hand the report blames the crash on a computer error. On the other, the crew was in VMC (visual conditions) which means that it should not have been relying on a computer to begin with. This fundamental contradiction somehow never got impressed on the judge, and was rather casually rationalized away by Gordon Vette, who otherwise wrote a very interesting book.

  • @ginashina This was another controlled flight into terrain.

  • @ginashina Still, it's CFIT.

  • @AdamJLemon It was not pilot error, get your facts straight, it was a wrong flight path programmed into the plane. The mistake was not made by the pilots but by Air NZ

  • 20 crew? WTF.

  • well done, great video

  • Horrible it had to happen =[ Is this the CLS DC-10? If it is, whered you get the repaint?

  • At least get it right. This is absolute crap

  • ha ha tats a video game

  • This is one of the few decent Flight Simulator video's I've seen, great work!!!

  • very good video ;)

  • nice videos man

  • im so NOT subscribing now...

  • howcome?

  • well....its cause this vid dosent show what completely happened and just made it up -_- >_> there

  • i know people hate this video, but had the pilot obbayed the 6000ft altitude minimum, perhaps they infact would of seen the volcano, but considering the pilot only changes the planes pitch 15 degrees by computer as he was taught to do,he oviusly didnt see the mtn,not even at the last second.

  • This just adds to the 'mountain' of false information on the internet.

Some 12 year old is going to think this is how it really happened.

  • What an ignorant video. Were you this stupid when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

  • The Germans bombed Pearl Harbour too? Was that before or after the Japanese ?

  • It was not ANZ 901. It was in fact TE901.

  • This is VERY inaccurate. Most notably the last few seconds of the video. The flight crew never actually saw the mountain nor did they even suspect it of being directly in front of them. They, in fact, thought it was over 20 miles away off their right wing. So the whole depiction of their last few seconds in this video is completely inaccurate.

All they had was the ground proximity alert and then 6 seconds later they impacted the mountain. They never saw it and never reacted as if they did.

  • I believe the communication inside the cockpit went like: First Officer Greg Cassin: You're clear to turn right. There's no high ground of you do a one eighty. Ground Proximity Warning System: Whoop, whoop. Pull up. Whoop whoop. Altitude Callout: Five hundred feet. Ground Proximity Warning System: Pull up. Altitude Callout: Four hundred feet. Ground Proximity Warning System: Whoop, whoop. Pull up. Whoop whoop. Pull up. Captain Jim Collins: Go-around power please.
  • The flight management computer on the aircraft had been incorrectly programmed prior to flight (at the flight planning stage). This was not known to the pilots who duly programmed this flight plan into the FMS, which placed the aircraft in a racetrack pattern offset from the intended position- it was now placing the aircraft on collision course with the mountain. The crew never took evasive action due to the white-out effect dicussed earlier.

  • 237 passengers and 20 crew please get your facts right.

  • This is utterly offensive. Well done on a great display of ignorance and disrespect.

  • @Freeform01 Utterly offensive? In what way?

  • what game is that?

  • I dont think the captain said shit before inpact. also I dont think they ever actually seen Erebus because of the cloud

  • wow a 30000 foot mountain.

  • just crap this! get your facts right and what the Pilots were supposed to have said before they hit Mt.Erebus, brush up on your history into this Air Accident and read some books on this subject for a start!

  • Nice work on the simulation (except for the tyre smoke on rotate)

But it is INCREDIBLY disrespectful to those who died in this crash to just make up the CVR transcript and the events leading up to the impact. Get it right, or get it off.

  • my Dad almost went on this, but luckily for him he couldnt afford a ticket at the time.

  • Please edit your transcript of the CVR. It is an offence to the memory of the aircew.

  • o_O

  • There is a major error here.

The plane was never in cloud, so how could it break out of cloud allowing the crew to suddenly see Mt Erebus? The plane was in clear air the WHOLE TIME. The crew lost horizon definition due to being under an overcast, but over white sea ice then snow on the lower slopes of Erebus.

The captain never said "Oh Sh...". He calmly reacted to the GPWS by requesting go-around power.

  • The plane was so in cloud!

  • The plane was NOT in cloud. It was flying under an overcast, over the sea ice, then finally the lower slopes of Erebus. The crew experienced sector white-out. They were in perfectly clear air when they hit the mountain.

  • The other notable fature of the Erebus disaster was the "sector whiteout". The aircraft was flying in clear air with 40 miles of visibility, and yet it was flown into the side of a mountain without anyone on the flightdeck ever seeing it.

  • Part 2 of 2, The new flight path brought them in from the ocean directly behind Mt Eribus as seen from McMurdo Radar. Thus their descent from Cruise to Sightseeing height for that flight was hidden by Mt Eribis from McMurdo Radar. This explains the pilots puzzlement as to why McMurdo Radar said "no contact" when on previous flights they were already on radar flying that descent leg. Their descent profile kept them behind Eribus, resulting in trajedy. Hope this helps explain this trajedy.

  • Part 1 of 2 comments. 1st, good vid of a most horrible and avoidable trajedy. Back then tran oceanic flights used Inertial Nav Systems. Very accurate IF programmed properly. Someone in Air NZ Flt Planning reprogrammed the INS Way Points or "WP's", on this DC10 and Didn't tell the pilots. The new WP's moved the flight path many miles east from over open water to right through Mt Erebis. Old flight path kept their descent on McMurdo Radar, added safety feature. ... continued next comment.

  • Yes they did descend. Still a good clip but it was a terrible thing all the same. I was trying to study for my exams while the rports were coming abou the plane being overdue. It seemed everyone knew of someone, NZ is a small country.

There was areal s++t storm later when the inquiry judge effectively said he was being lied to.

  • You might want to do your homework on this.

They descended to 10000ft during the approach to Ross Island then got permission to descend to as low as 2000ft but they went lower eventually they dropped to some 1400ft when they crashed into the mountain.

And the transcript you provided is not the one played during the royal commission of enquiry, There are plenty of websites with the correct black box recordings out there as what you have provided is your own interpretation of events not factual.

  • What I was trying to say was that the Dc-10 cruised at 30000 feet. The descended once the got to antarctica

  • Must have descended...Mt. Erebus is only 12,451 feet tall.

  • 30000Ft? Is Mt.Erebus really as high as Everest? or did they descend? Good job making this video too. Never heard of this poor puppy. R.I.P.
