This is a commercial that I built in San Francisco a few years ago when I was the foreman at ACME scenery. Totally nuts! Would not have been possible with the efforts of the worlds greatest location manager: Mark Redmond
Still makes me a bit nauseous to watch it. The cut happens when he's in the store buying the beer. It was two full blocks of plug walls, scenic facades, something like a dozen separate sets designed to create two 'matching blocks.'
I was actually in this commercial. Im the dude chillin on the El Camino. The commercial was a blast to shoot. Everyone there was really great. EXCELLENT WORK!!
They duplicated certain aspects of the street, but if you look carefully, you'll see things are different. Check out the house behind where they're playing hoops... it's a different house. And even more telling, when he parks the bike at the store, look at where the wall meets the sidewalk next to the back wheel before he goes in and after he comes out again. If you're ever in San Francisco, visit Peru Street, and you'll see where it was shot.
I live on the street in hilly San Francisco where this was filmed and saw it happen. They set up two identical stores... one above the house and one below. While he's in the store that's below the house, they seamlessly spliced the tape and moved him to the one above, from where he continues riding downhill to the original location of the house.
Thanks you so much for letting me know. I spent so long trying to figure it out. Thought it was some kind of digital trickery. It's so simple now that I know how it's done. Thanks you so much!

The only thing that could have made this ad better is if he'd picked up a 24 pack of Budweiser.

Well if that was true, wouldn't he pass by different buildings? Or did they build whole street twice? Nice story mate.

That is a sign that reads:
"OPEN
ABIERTO"
Abierto = Open, in spanish. Is that "subliminal"? It is subliminally telling me that the shop is open?
ubrayj02 3 years ago
no dude . u can only read the part that says "open abier" .. it sounds like "open a beer" ... get it?
