  • This was really great and informative. I practiced it and learned it in like 15 mins.

  • You are doing an excellent work. I enjoy watching your videos so much, especially the "high hat stomp" vid was really, really awesome! :-)

I also like your way of teaching. Its funny, but informative as well!

Anyway, i have just spotted that you dont use earplugs during your vids. Do you put on some ear protection during practice?

'Cause i wondered, if you are expecriencing any problems with your hearing capabilities, after over 30 years of more or less excessive drumming?

    greets from germany

  • @realSteak86 Actually I am wearing earplugs in this video. Look closely. They are skin color but a bit off of my color. When I was younger I made the mistake of not wearing them much while playing. Yes I have some damage to my hearing. I always wear them now. RVP

  • vansdrumming I'm 5 5 and dunking in games all the time - WOOT! How do I do it? take a look at (50 inch vertical [dot] com)

  • #VIDEOPOSTERID# I'm only 5 6 and I dunk nonstop. I m in my high school's ball team and my dunking wows everyone (like the girls haha). It was honestly extremely simple, I just used the nba training program over at 50 inch vertical (dot) com - I m sure you can probably do it too

Drum Lesson - Double Handed Crossover - Vanz Drumming

  • Hey I have a question. I watched this video and I started practicing double-handed crossovers. Great vid, btw. How can I come up with more patterns and combinations for crossovers, for use in solos, fills, and grooves? What are some good practice methods for them, to get faster and have new combos? -thanks a lot!

  • Thanks, I needed to learn that trick!

  • do u have double basspedal at 4:30 ?

  • vansdrumming, unbelievable that is OD. That's coming from a guy who s 5 5 but do windmill dunks. I followed the dunk training program over at 50inch vertical[dot]com and increased past 13 ins on my jump.

  • hey randy, awsome vids. i was wondering if you could do a video that has the basics to making a drum solo. that would be great if you would. thanks.

  • if you watch his video on double bass drumming - 16ths on hands and feet - he suggests drum solo basics :D

  • that was a seriously awesome end!!!! thanks for the help

  • GODDAMN COWBELL!

  • Hey great lesson, RVP. I was just wondering what the name of the technique you used in the solo at the end on the snare was, kind of like a pick up to the beat on the snare, slow at first and then quicker adding accents. Or perhaps if you have a video on it?

  • Great lesson RVP!!! Great solo at the end....man I love your solos.

  • RVP is one of the best and funniest drummers i have ever seen in my 40 years of playing drums.

    Keep it going man!

  • Thank you. RVP

  • Have a great gig, Bit to far for me, being over 5000 miles away. The audience is in for a treat though. Enjoy.

  • Thanks... it will be pretty funny cause I don't remember half the tunes. Ha Ha. RVP

  • i hav a question... can you plz make a video for how to record drums with the least mics used. cause i hav a bad budget.. it will be a great favour.. thx alooot..

  • Your gonna have fun !!

I used to do stand in gigs and usually one or two songs would always throw me a huge curve ball.

I always made sure the lead singer told the audience at the beginning that i was standing in, then you could get away with it.

The funniest ones were me ending the song where i thought it should ,but the band carry on playing, or vica versa, HA HA.

Let us know how you get on.

  • Oh yeah... it's all good. I love improving and wingin' it. RVP

  • Hey Randy,

Did you have a great gig?

    Clive

  • For those of you in the Tampa Bay area I will be filling in on Drums with Fat Clemenza this Saturday night the 3rd at:

  • that was the shit so cool dude awsome drummer

  • just awesome :D

  • Evans EC2 coated, got em on my Yamrack kit. Can't tell you how much of an inprovement these thing are. Forget tone control rings, dampers, socks, underpants (lol), just grab a set, they made my kit sound fantastic. Randy's cool, i've been reading sum of the knockers on here, & ummm - wtf are they on about !!!

Keep cruisin Randy, DONT CHANGE A THING, its all good. !!

  • thanks a lot. very useful.

  • Randy cracks me up.. He makes drumming fun when practicing... would love to take private lessons from him... Prolly wouldn't do nothing but laugh the whole time... Keep up the video's Randy

  • Finally something you can do that I can do.

  • Nice sounding drumset!!!

  • Nice ideas...............

  • what is a good work out to get your legs fit enough to do constant double kicks with out straining your limbs???

  • I really enjoy watching and practicing on your videos every time you post one, i think you are a great teacher and you always have good ideas for patterns and special effects. Thank you!

  • Thanks Randy - and keep talking! That's what makes RVP vids so enjoyable. and as for wimpy... It's just a shame there are so many keyboard guerillas eh? They're always so much better at things than we are ;)

  • lol why are you all bitching...?

hes doing a great job in helping other drummers out there who are looking to improve...

i for one like all his talking.. he has funny, and he does't have to take advice from any one. hock3ydud3.if ur complaining why even watch the video?

  • That really is a terrible technique. You don't have the ability to get any power whatsoever from that.

  • Dude,if you're going to tell someone who has been playing drums before you even got laid you should probobly know atleast a little bit what you're talking about, seriously.

  • I think I know plenty about drumming, and music in general as far as that goes.

  • even if you do know plenty about music in general,he can still take a huge pile of shit and FLING it AT the drum set and STILL have more skill than 90% of the people watching his videos,so blah

  • Power? Does my playing really sound wimpy to you? Huh... anyone else want to chime in? RVP

  • sounds great to me and powerful; i had to fav it!

  • Yes,yes sir i do,but first off i wanted to say that on youtube, you are one of the best drum teachers on here and i try to learn as much as i can from you :D.and as far as no power, that guys a DUMBASS....

  • You are great Randy, don't listen to this guy, his just jealous because he has no talent, lol.

  • you must play with the german grip or something. Its not all about power. Especially when you have a high end kit that is sensitive enough

  • Lolol, im pretty sure Randy's been thrown th' good & th bad. He would't care to much what people say, he knows he's a twisted half baked comedian, just so happens, this comedian can play, lol. Alway's alway's a pleasure to see th' "Vans Man" doin his stuff.

Hey Randy, is that cross over stuff still applicable to short reach people such as myself ?, ;) Great Vids.

  • this guy is crazy! he is so funny and the videos are Amazing!

    Thanks Vanz!!

  • Always a total pleasure watching the videos. Have a great day and thank you so much for sharing.

  • hock3ydud3 is typical of the individuals who have nothing better to do that criticize every video they can find. Mind you, they don't post any of their own to prove their skill level, they just continue to insinuate they are somehow a percussion prodigy. RVP has the ability to explain the concepts, demonstrate the concepts, and apply the concepts he teaches. and THAT is what makes a truly great teacher and drummer. In other words, show us what you've got or go away. Thanks 4 all u do RVP!

  • I never said he wasn't good asshole, I just said he should talk less otherwise people might get bored before the lesson actually begins. YOU seem to be the typical individual who likes to attack anyone on youtube that you can, for no other reason than to be an asshole. I never said I was good at drums, and I don't think I'm better than him, so I'm not sure where you're pulling this supposed knowledge of my character from.

  • Easy there Lumpy, you don't have to stoop to profanity to make your point; I'll listen. I didn't mean to offend your sensibilities but, I haven't found anyone else who thinks RVP talks too much. As to attacking YT participants, well feel lucky; you're the first. In the future perhaps your criticism should be less "I usually leave your videos..." and more, "Could you please, explain, be more succinct, etc.." Knowledge of your character I gained from the earlier post and the profanity

  • You're the man thank you!

  • I have a quick question for hock3ydud3:

If you find it so annoying, why do you continue to watch? This guy has taught us all so much drum tastyness over the years, and all you can do is whine... you are a true loser. Some people actually like his teaching style ( like myself), and can respect a true master.

    Vanz ROCKS!!!

  • idd :p

  • Kind of hard to teach something to someone without explaining it. No? So many people complain that most lessons out there don't explain enough, they just demo the groove. I don't think anyone benifits from someone just playing a groove. Besides... I get more people telling me that I talk too fast. Now you are telling me I talk too much. Huh... People really complain a lot when these are FREE lessons. RVP

  • Just ignore the idiots bro, you're a great teacher.

  • screw these spoiled creeps

  • You're too long winded about it, the entire first part of just talking could have been sooo much shorter if you take into account that you said all that stuff again when you finally got on your kit. I'm not complaining either, I'm simply letting you know about something and trying to be helpful - my mistake. Also, just because these lessons are free does not give you any justifications for reacting this way to someone trying to be helpful.

  • you can fast forward if you're not social...

  • not social? Because I don't feel like sitting through him talking forever one time and then having to sit through it again when he plays? I was just trying to give him a tip, apparently the youtube assholes will criticize you no matter what.

  • randy dont hate me man.great videos.

  • nice video man hey wat heads do you use for the botom of your dtoms and also how was your drum off in florida any one stand out that could go far

  • Remo single ply. Judging going on now. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • ...O_O>>>BLAMO

  • See how the camera starts shaking near the end of the solo? Too much awesome in a confined space.

  • that camera angel is making me wanna get a stick and WHACK those toms!!!haha

  • cool xD!!!

  • its so funny wen he trys to end the demos cuz he has no idea how hahaha

  • haha i love this guys enthusiasm, thank you so much, ive been looking for a decent crossover fill video

  • Im a guitarplayer not a drummer and I love watching this guy play. Hes kinda goofey but hes an excellent teacher and really takes the time to explain things which many good musicians dont do.

  • Great!!!

  • great stuff... sweat!!! :P

  • oh man I love randy's videos haha

  • Very nice lesson. I think I would end up whacking my left wrist with my right stick doing that crossover to the upper tom though. It looks like the stick just goes right through your arm from that angle. Your speed is also very impressive.

  • YEEEEEEEEEEES!! Ending solo, awesome, we can hear your love for drums in every vids! Keep going!!!

  • that solo at the end was INSANE.

IDEA: you should do a lesson covering that solo, or something. that was immense.

  • It was just a combination of of those techniques I just covered. Nothing crazy. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • awesome pattern man great stuff!!

  • i'm pretty sure that solo at the end was the double handed cross over technique that he just taught us - with some variations as to what he's hitting. =)

  • thanks again RVP !

  • Your toms has soooo excelent sound !

  • respectable solo at the end

  • I like how the camera shakes lol

  • Maybe its the world shaking.

  • :D

Great stuff as always Randy! Thanks for all your vids! :)

  • crazy stuff lol, this guys insane

  • do you have a band?

  • what kind of evans heads are on the toms? is there a coated version of that?

  • These are Evans EC2 Coated heads.

    RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • HAHA YEAH!!!! \m/ Van kicks ass!!

  • YOUR AN ANIMALLLLL

  • Great, thanks!

  • hahaha wow! I have never seen any video of your end like that. your awesome. Are the DVD sales goin good?

  • no way wjen i came to do double handed cross over i made the same pattern that weird man.

Randy ur the king thanks for all the sweet stuff that u gaive out on youtube

  • Man, that is some epic bad technique. You don't get good stroke power when you're turning your right wrist over and over and back over again. Where the hell do they teach this style? Seriously, anyone, who plays like this?

  • seriously, wtf

  • Been working for me for over 30 years. Don't seem to have a loss of stroke power. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • Would you show us some advantages or just some licks that would make using a floor tom to the left of the snare more convenient, please?

  • EPIC ENDING

  • Oh god the ending was epic alright!

  • Thank you for another wonderful video! I am curious as to where you place the kick drum beat? On 1/4's or something funky? Again Thanks

  • Brilliant as always :-)

  • nice!

  • I hear Some Bonham in here ;)

  • Awesome lesson!!! Cheers mate!

  • Wish you are my drum teacher haha. Great stuff mister!! \m/

  • what type of pedal do you use?

  • Looks like DW9000s

  • Your drum is sooo beautiful! Awesome.

And your lessons are amazing, still rockin' on!

  • i did this with my snare and hihat once and saw some guy do it and was told is was by mike portnoy... i thought i made it up :) its fun to play on hihat too.. try it out

  • ohh i see.. thanks so much sir.

  • Sir van, which do u prefer? evan drumheads or remo pinstripe on the toms? i just noticed that your toms have a solid sound w/o any mufflers.

  • These are Evans EC2 Coated heads. I love them. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • Wicked drum solo at the end... I wanna be that awesome one day.

  • Ha! 6:05 - Sounds like Mr Magoo! Excellent as always...

    Especially loved the finish!

  • I hear a lot of gospel/hiphop drummers use this technique but I wasn't quite sure how because of the speed used in the fill.
