Hey Nutn, love your reviews. I live in Northern Australia, I don't need to process wood for warmth. I do however hunt hogs with a bow off the back of my ATV. Im looking for a knife with a solid sheath (bumpy ride on ATV) and good edge holding capability to cut the the grizzle when I am removing the hog's jaw. Very humid environment here so I need something coated. Any suggestions?
I am always just BLOWN away at how your vids just stand the test of time bro...not that I should be as your reviews have always been extremely through and real world tested before you put a camera to it for the review. Scoping out the knives for some after Christmas purchases!! :) NJK is calling my name!!!
I hope this isn't a dumb question but what is gimping (spelled correctly?)? The ridges on the spine of the blade? I'm not sure what it is for. Your video's are great but once in a while you use a term that isn't in my vocabulary.
@bookmark71 You are correct! Gimping/jimping are the ridges or notches cut into the blade at the spine. This gives the thumb traction in certain uses of the knife.
Hey Nutn, I know it's in the lineup for review, but I was wondering if you have found the Junglas from ESEE to be worth the 150 asking price. I have been staring at that knife for weeks
Have you ever played around with the Schrade Extreme Survival Knive schf9? I would like to see how it holds up or compares up to some of these $100 survival knives.
Just saying, I have the RAT-7 also and you can avoid cutting the retention straps by putting the knife in the sheath the other way. I understand this would be awkward for right handed people but if you are just camping it would be fine.
Is the warranty for the RAT-7 as good as what ESEE knives offer? For instance, if you cut through the Ontario RAT-7 with a blowtorch, will they replace it? Thank you.
hello nutnfancy or Veri. would you recommend this knife for going out in the woods with only that knife? i will probably be out for 2 or 3 nights. i am in the sweden where there is lots if small ilands that are deserted and that means i have to swim island to island, will the sheath have problems drying? please answer! thanks!
@nutnfancy I also need my knife to do the same as mrsachimi1 but will also need it to hold up 3-4 days in the mountains when its winter, i live in Norway so it could get around -30C and will it then hold up if i need it to hack ice?
thanks for the cool vids.. just one thing .. i like this style sheath and a lot of guys do but then there are guys like you that like kydex, so i think instead of just offering one or the other the company should offer a choice on sheath since the opinions and uses vary widely.
i would like an honest opinion here, im 13 and if i were to do a serious review on knives like this, would it end up as funny to most people because my age. most info on the knives would probably come from other youtubers.
@GraysonKeever No, theyr not the same, the RAT-7 is 30cm owerall and the RTAK 2 is around 44cm. Sorry for not writing the mashurment in inches, but im from Norway and we mashure in Centimeters :)
@lukio12 The RAT-7 would be exelent, but its a little expensive for a beginnerknife, go for a ka bar heawy bowie or a Ontario sp-10 marine raider :) If u want a shorter knife go for the Ontario airforce survival knife.
I have a dilemma. 1) I want a GOOD survival knife that will actually be usefull and not break/fail in a real situation. 2) I want a "cool looking rambo style" knife with gizmos and thingys. Are there any such what so ever? Or are the two points above incompatible? Advice is highly appreciated.
@MrSatanica the two points are at odds. sorry. cool rambo style knife with hollow handle filled with fishing line, waterproof matches, hooks, tinder, etc etc is great for show or to goof with when camping, but if you want something useful in a survival situation, forget the rambo knife. for that, do some research, figure out some likely candidates (should be able to get an idea by watching various videos here on youtube) and if you can actually test a few to find one you like.
@pockEclipse Hey. The limited space you have for comments is... limited. I have done quite a lot of research and I have had for a long while a KaBar Heavy Bowie, which is an excellent survival knife. As you say, combining the two types of cool is probably not so easy. I am thinking about the SOG Jungle Primitive, but most serious knife reviewers consider it sub par. I might get it anyway, simply for its awsome cool "rambo" appearance. ;)
@BluePittbull666 i'm not sure that question can be answered, it really comes down to personal preference, and there are lots of survival knives for different purposes.
@Proteus3000 Same knife basically, RAT-7 has .75" longer cutting edge. The ESEE has better fit/finish and better factory edge. The big difference is the sheath... in this area the ESEE is WAY better.
something that would be a must for me if stuck in a survival situation would be some needle nose pliers. they are so usefull and durable i would have it on me for sure. and im not joking
on my BK bowie pouch on the sheath, I put a magnesium/fire starter and my leatherman wave. It adds weight to the knife system, but worth it. I can grab my knife and have items with me that are bare bones survival.
@wmc1982 ,the fit and finish of the ESEE knives are a bit better and the heat treat is more consistent is what i heard some people say.Don't know about that myself though.Do know about the fit and finish difference.
@wilcox1219 ,recently i read about a knifemaker that they tested one RAT-7,and that blade had a Rockwell hardness of 45.That was in 2010.his words:
"I hate to say it but i just got an Ontario RAT 7 ,1095 i believe, rockwell tested and it came in at 45 rc. That's right not even 55.rc. It was a shame because i liked the designe. Oh and yes the rockwell machine is a calibrated professional unit at a heat treaters".
Don't know ,but i can't imagine that would be the case with all RAT-7's.
i prefer leather sheaths, if it's quality no problem no way. And that front pocket can be used to carry a bunch of stuff like fire starters..it looks kind of big for a survival so too clumsy RAT 5 is better, i never used my big knife (that size). Anyhow, if it's a hybrid survival/combat...that usually means that it not excellent at either function...At least it's D2 though and not stainless, does it hold an edge well and long (heat treat)?
@goodtimes616 definatly. I'm very impressed with D2, holds an edge very very well, it's just takes a little bit more time to sharpen it, but it's fairly easy with the right tools and skills.
@yarp123123123123123 It amazes me what trolls will do, starts off complaining about how long the video is, but then has taken literally the videos length writing all these comments.
@yarp123123123123123 I have no idea what you just said, please use an actual language and actual grammar, then i might know what you are trying to say.
@yarp123123123123123 Please capitalize the first letter of the sentences, use punctuation, and its "You're" not "Your". Mean't is spelled "Mean't" not "ment". It would have been "To dumb to Know what I Mean't".
@Kylef7735 yeah it is correct welldone and i think you have gona waaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy over the top with it obv and yeah am sure i did but uno wen am typing on here i cba doin correct grammar so go fuck yourself
I'm looking to buy one of these, but I want to know if I should get a strait edge version like the one you have, or if I should get a partially serrated one? Any suggestions?
Check out my website for the best kydex sheath you can reasonably buy. I do ALL my work without electric tools, if you buy now you get a free add-on (a ten dollar value)
Iv'e got discounts for double orders and reviews.
I do not make my living off of this so i can assure great prices, and i've got all the time in the world for your sheath.
I upload videos to youtube.com with the detailed steps in making YOUR sheath, not someone else's.
I have the RAT 7's bigger brother the RTAK II, and I love it. One of the things I could never under stand is the cost of the RAT 7, it's just as expensive as the RTAK II !
And the RTAK II is way bigger, you think since the RAT 7 is smaller, thus less carbon steel, it would be cheaper? I don't agree with the pricing.
I watched your vids bec I am want to purchase a fixed blade survival knife. I noticed that you're sometimes generous in your reviews, like you'll overlook a negative stated in other vids. For ex: you mentioned that you like this handle, yet, you like a MUCH larger handle in other vids. Thumb notches are a wanted feature but you'll say "that's okay" bec the Ontario RTAK doesn't have it. You even sharpen new blades. So, what knife has it all in your opinion- Design, heft, handle, sheath, strength?
@creamneuron both extremely similar, but if i were to choose i would probably get the esee (rat cutlery) 6 because rat cutlery has a no question asked warranty, where even if you intentionally break your knife, you can send it back and get it replaced, and i think the quality of rat cutlery is better than Ontario. they also come with a kydex sheath which is also better than the cordura with kydex liner the rat 7 comes with. (unless you want D2, that only comes with rat-7)
Great vid. I just bought the rat-7 based upon nutn's recommendation and I like the knife. Nutin's review was pretty much right on. Keep up the good work.
i agree with you on the stone why drag a rock with you one of the best stones i've had is a little rock i picked up in my parking lot stick a fire steal and some tinder in the little pouch on the sheath or something else useful
I have this knife and i didn't like how they had a bunch of wiggle in the sheath. So, I took a folder and cut it to where it would fit inside the kydex. It makes a big difference. Now it holds titely and it has less wiggle than my brother's kabar with his glass filled nylon sheath.
My bet for what he'd take would be his recon scout, a multi tool, and his sawvivor (saw is still a blade).
I know his take on the saw vs axe but I contest that with the fact that a saw is more likely to break over the long term than is a hatchet. Reference the early Canadian settlers. Unforgiving wilderness means you need tough tools. Axes and hatchets can take a lot of abuse.
Yet again a review that is objective and informative. I have subscribed. Glad that there is not fluffy BS in your reviews. Honesty and integrity. 10/10
I guess I am just being a purist. I mean the Bowie Knife was the first true fighting knife I know and it did not have a blood grove, but the clipped point.
What the blood grove does is make it easier to pull the knife out once it is stuck in as it prevents suction. I don't mean to make a big deal. I am still looking at the RAT but not sure. Let me know what you think of it.
@teb0atoz blood grove has nothing to do with combat knives. it's called a "blood grove", but has NOTHING to do with blood draining or anything, it just makes the knife blade stronger, thanks to the semi-cylindrical shape of it
would you recommend this knife for bush craft uses? im considering this, and/or busse. id like a blade for wood working..i need a blade to take a beating.. if you have any other suggestions please let me know.
I actually found an RD 7 for sale. But eventually decided on the RAT-7.... mainly because it had the work "RAT" written on the blade!! How cool is that!
@Hamking1 im a compmplete traditionalist, i like swedish and irish bushcraft knifes, hand forged and tempered as they have been for the past 100 years in a handsome leather sheeth
Hey Nutn, love your reviews. I live in Northern Australia, I don't need to process wood for warmth. I do however hunt hogs with a bow off the back of my ATV. I'm looking to buy one of these, but I want to know if I should get a strait edge version like the one you have, or if I should get a partially serrated one? Any suggestions?

@Ultibeast Straight. Unless you're sawing wood then I recommend straight.

So what's THE best fixed blade in the sub $100 category guys?? The Gerber Yari seems to have s30v steel for around that same price point.

I have one and love it. Great for living in the woods!
offgridmontana 1 year ago
Hey, thx for all the reviews, you are helping me very much with this.
i am a bit irritated, the ESEE RC-6 and the Ontario RC-7 are the same size, but on all videos or pictures the rc-7 looks so much bigger (longer).
Did you have your hands on the RC-6 from ESEE? I cannot decide between this two knives.
creamneuron 1 year ago
@creamneuron both extremely similar, but if i were to choose i would probably get the esee (rat cutlery) 6 because rat cutlery has a no question asked warranty, where even if you intentionally break your knife, you can send it back and get it replaced, and i think the quality of rat cutlery is better than Ontario. they also come with a kydex sheath which is also better than the cordura with kydex liner the rat 7 comes with. (unless you want D2, that only comes with rat-7)
dragonboy666666 1 year ago
@dragonboy666666 yes, the esee-guarantee is indeed very nice. =)

I think the Recon Scout is the best knife. It's just more reliable.

Would you recommend a RC 6, OR RC 7?
FuzorDragon480 1 year ago
i agree with you on the stone why drag a rock with you one of the best stones i've had is a little rock i picked up in my parking lot stick a fire steal and some tinder in the little pouch on the sheath or something else useful
digger4848 1 year ago
I have this knife and i didn't like how they had a bunch of wiggle in the sheath. So, I took a folder and cut it to where it would fit inside the kydex. It makes a big difference. Now it holds titely and it has less wiggle than my brother's kabar with his glass filled nylon sheath.

Mode in Chine is always not as good. Might want to get a USA made sheath.
TheRealWolfspider 1 year ago
sir if you were in full on survival mode what 3 blades would you take?
nbr3223 1 year ago
if it's true survival you wont have a choice.

Rat 7 or RC7 ?? I did not know ESEE made RAT7, I thought the largest knife ESEE made was Rat 6 ?
urkingod 1 year ago
it took you almost 5 minutes to show the knife, make the vids les talk more showing then explain pros and cons, saves people alot of time.
owned2hell 1 year ago
Nutn, the molle straps would be great for securing the knife to the outside of your pack.
JustinBaker2567 1 year ago
I've heard RC6 is the biggest Esee made knife which is better than RAT 7.

@urkingod the manufacturer say it's better, but actually I don't find it better at all

If you want a combat knife you should take a look at the tops hawk recon. If you can't get it done with that then you just can't get it done.
MyPhotog 1 year ago
I guess I am just being a purist. I mean the Bowie Knife was the first true fighting knife I know and it did not have a blood grove, but the clipped point.
What the blood grove does is make it easier to pull the knife out once it is stuck in as it prevents suction. I don't mean to make a big deal. I am still looking at the RAT but not sure. Let me know what you think of it.
cheers
teb0atoz 1 year ago
This is not a combat knife there is NO blood grove.
cheers
teb0atoz 1 year ago
@teb0atoz dude, wtf
glenroald17 1 year ago
@glenroald17 A true combat knife has two thing 1) blood grove 2) a clipped point for inserting in the spine.
Dont worry it is not a major issue just a bunch of bored people that want to say something. Thanks for doing the video.
cheers
teb0atoz 1 year ago
@teb0atoz up to a certain point you are correct, but what about tanto's, and some of the sog's dont have a blood grove
glenroald17 1 year ago
@teb0atoz blood grove has nothing to do with combat knives. it's called a "blood grove", but has NOTHING to do with blood draining or anything, it just makes the knife blade stronger, thanks to the semi-cylindrical shape of it
ChronicMist 1 year ago
@teb0atoz Okay I'll be a man and say I stand corrected. So remove your wtf.
cheers
