I like the way you think savecanton, we should get CRBI to hold one of their get the dirt out classes and teach a bunch of us so that we can patrol all PEC subdivisions and report them for every little violation. They will not get very far with continuous stop work orders on their projects. I know someone who did this for 700 apartments that were going to be built on Hwy. 140. It WORKED the developer gave up and built 200 town homes instead. We could call our group -Citizens Patrol PEC
This project is riddled with problems and obstacles to overcome and PEC could find themselves fighting to gain approval for this mess for the next 10 years and still not be able to build Canton West. The legal expenses will increase the land cost above market value if they keep this up. Most business minded companies know when to cut their losses and run. Even if the court grants their zoning we could stop the maddness by turning them in for every erosion control violation, amount others.
I can't believe this developer thinks the design of the Canton City Council was arbitrary and capricious. Do they actually believe the will of the people and their best interests means nothing? If PEC thinks they can win their zoning by taking us to court they are sadly mistaken. They do not have a constitutional right to be annexed into a city.
The reaction of PEC president Paul Corley in the Ledger News is hysterical. "We were wronged". Actually the people have been "wronged" for many years in Canton and finally their voices were heard. I think there's hope for Canton and Cherokee County yet, the people have had enough and they are getting involved to stop the rape of our land by development.
frank1time, This view is right across from Donny's and the Krystal. The traffic backs up that far from the North Canton Intersection! The proposed Canton West Parkway would be back up the hill at Westview-Right neighborhood-GO TAKE ANOTHER LOOK!!
The only legal sign locations they will find are on their own property and the property of the lawyers, bankers, land owners and contractors who will all profit from this disaster as well, IF council gives their rubber stamp of approval. Hopefully common sense will prevail and fortunately we do have many responsible council members.
YES they are savecherokee! Just shows how desperate they are getting. Today at lunch, I saw their signs in the PUBLIC right-of-way in front of two businesses. I called the businesses and they did not know they were there. Both said they opposed and were going to take the signs down. Plus, placing signs in public right-of-way is ILLEGAL! But, that has never stopped PEC before - what's a little "law" got to do with getting their massive project approved?
PEC is really doing themselves in. They are putting up Canton West Yes signs and they are putting them up on properties that are owned by people who are opposed to this. They are also pulling up some of our NO CANTON WEST signs. They are showing their true colors and people will see right through them. They are putting signs up without permission. They will lose credibility fast. We have permission for every sign location.
Canton West has taken a full page ad to tout "promises". Canton need only look to Woodstock to see the results of developer "promises". After years of allowing development based on "promises" that never happened, Woodstock is now not only cutting services (eliminating many officer responses to 911 calls) but raising taxes on residents to cover the impact. No budget exists to improve the "F" level of service roads. The result of developer "promises" - lower quality of life for all. Canton beware!
We need to escort PEC and developers like them to the county line and lock the gate. They rally for their side and we have no input, yet when citizens try to express their thoughts the developer butts in. I thought Macauley was bad, PEC is worse. Macauley had his supporters write letters but they never wrote letters themselves. I wonder if PEC will make the fatal mistake Macauley did by packing the meeting with their employees, bankers, realtors etc. It all makes them look really bad.
Looks like Jo Ellen Wilson may be prepared to go down with the ship! Too bad since I think she was once respected by her constituents. Now, it seems like she is just trying to plug the leaks from Cecil Pruett's Titanic mistakes! Grab a lifeboat Ms. Wilson, and float on over to the other side! Respect your constituents' overwhelming opposition to Canton West!
PEC and low density are two words that don't fit together. I have been to several of PEC's projects - The one on Hwy.20 near Union Hill looks like James Creek. The "green space is hard to find there as well, it's just a bunch of weeds and overgrown scrub. The development in Ball Ground is even worse. The only difference I have seen with PEC is the size and location. The same old cookie cutter with the endless rows of boxes all piled on top of one another. Pulte, KB, PEC your all the same.
PEC, please pack up your bulldozers and GO AWAY! We do not want what you are trying desperately to sell. Canton does not need a generic, massive development. There is nothing "creative" or "visionary" about this project. It's only defining trait is its sheer scale: too massive for our fragile community! Leave us be, and let our elected officials, if they are capable, focus their time and energy on solving the massive growth problems we already have in Canton!
A healthy dialog about growth is what we need. Yes, the citizens are finally waking up to the fact that we have to pay attention. Beware of waking the sleeping dragon.
A healthy economy depends on decent paying jobs. My fear is that once the construction jobs are gone, we'll be left with a bedroom community and low paying service jobs.
There has been plenty of opposition. People come out to object and the project gets delayed and that has happened several times. No point getting all stirred up again until we realized it was really going forward. Nice timing for PEC, sneaking in right after the elections when you thought we were not paying attention. Surprise, surprise, we were paying attention and we don't want no stinking Canton West or any other projects like it. Learn to build nice developments or leave Cherokee.
There was not much opposition because no one really knew the details. Especially since it is on the record that PEC was told by Cecil Pruett to just go through him and Marie Garrett, and he would "take care" of things! PEC, a seasoned developer, elected to follow the under-the-table route instead of the official one, so they should not be rewarded now. The opposition, which includes the overwhelming majority, voiced their opinion at the public hearing and related council meetings. Appropriate!

Where was all of the opposition when this project was announced two years ago. I guess that it is only effective to use scare tactics at the last minute. The lesson here is forward thinkers will be punished by those with zero creativity or vision. Will these people stop at nothing in distorting the truth in their attempt to elimate positive growth. Growth can only be stopped by providing a depressed economy. If the economy is bad enough no one will move there. Ask the people of Detroit.
Why is it that you feel your project is forward thinking? I think it lacks any imagination. It does not take creativity to bull doze beautiful landscapes and place row after row of box shaped "homes".
You support your way of development because it brings higher profit margins. We are choosing to wake up and take back our community before more of your type of development forever scars our landscape.
I am totally up for a RECALL of any council members who votes for this massive project! I have lived in Canton all my life, and we have almost 9,000 housing units already approved to handle future growth. Why tackle this project when we already have larger problems than we can deal with now? Council members, vote NO ANNEXATION FOR CANTON WEST!!!!!! The future of our quaint community is in your hands. It is criminal to see what PEC did to the land at James Creek.
I agree that JoEllen Wilson and Lester Cantrell should be recalled. Neither of these people seem to realize they are supposed to represent Canton citizens. I'd love to sign a recall petition!!!
It isn't just Jo Ellen Wilson who should be recalled. Lester Cantrell's comments on Canton West concerned how much money the developers have already spent. Please. That is what developers do. That doesn't make the project right for Canton.
Savecanton, you need to get with a friend of mine in Canton, they are forming a committee to have Jo Ellen Wilson recalled. That meeting you mentioned can be added to the long list of reasons they have for getting her recalled. It is against state law for an elected official to meet with a developer without the benefit of public notice. That is also cause for filing a complaint against her with the State Ethics Board. If she votes on this you will have a great case.
We are planning to go ahead with this if she votes on this. If she does the right thing here and recuses herself it might not be worth the effort. She has stated that she is not running for re-election next year and if she does she will be easy to win an election against especially with all of the people that have come out against Canton West. We will make sure they get out to vote.
A friend of mine was at Starbucks the other day and there sat JoEllen Wilson with Paul Corley and Todd Hager of PEC Development. After she left the developers gave each other the hi-5. What's up with that? What did she say that made them so happy? Wasn't she elected to represent the best interests of the taxpayers of this city -- not the developers? I will never vote for her again.
What would Jesus call this new development? Gethsamane Downs? Where there be anything left for our grandchildren to destroy and despoil? For our grandchildren? Are the dwindling remains of the natural earth merely for the consumption of the living?
As a citizen of Canton I really do not want more traffic on the roads. Also, the city is not ready to handle this type of development. I believe in growth, but not in this method. Why can't we re-develop what already exist?
City Council Members need to realize that times have changed and the city is in dire financial trouble because of all of the development already approved. Vote NO!!! TO CANTON WEST.
Is Jo Ellen Wilson on the PEC payroll? She sounds like she has taken a position as their marketing representative. I wonder what that's all about. I heard she is happy that the road will give her another route to work. Surely she wouldn't stick us with this tab just for her personal convenience?
