Eventhough you rarely see them apart in pictures from the wild, clownfish don't require an amenome to survive. It's a symbiotic relationship where the anemome's poison deters predators away from attacking the clownfish while the clownfish stands guard and feeds it's "host" anemone (or atleast both of my "pairs" do). The clownfish needs a constant, new layer of the poision on it's body so it won't be stung. That's why they rub, always in and out, in and back out all day long.
haaaaaa, Mine rubs intself against the brown colored anemone, with green bubble tips. I think its a way to get the anemone used to it. No only that, its almost like the anemone is its home, hiding in and and below its mushroom like top.
I have a Bubble anemone that I had just purchased. Is it normal for an anemone to 'hide'? I thought they needed light so why does it hide in my rocks? I just have a small 50/50 bulb (its an eclipse 12 gallon tank and the anemone is small) Help Please :)
the only advise i can give u is to just let the anemone be if he wants light he will find it bubbles are hard if you dont have crazy lighting power compacts are fine i just got 2 baby bubbles and theyre doing great they eat and move around the tank for now but in a month they might die but if you have a clown it can pair with you just sit back and watch if not feed it with a turkey baster monthly or every 2 weeks put food in middle and tentacles close n hold the food
Yes, its called a "symbiotic relationship." Apparently the clown fish develops a mucus like film on its scales to protect it from the anemone. It takes time for it to get used to, but eventually can do this.
Your anemone is probalby a bleached H. magnifica and they are the hardest to keep, but clownfish kan really help it adjust! But bleeched anemonies goes yellow after awhaile and dont live to long.
That it's bleached, I'm aware of. Been experimenting with different lighting and such recently, (recently = past 6 months) adding some rocks for him to hide under if the light was too intense, and some closer to the light if he wanted more. Right now, he's hiding out on the back side of a small tower of rocks, partially facing the lights. Still alive, but not flourishing. Not dying either though.
Dont overfeed him! its easy for beginners to overfeed. Give him a small piece of shrimp every two weeks, to much and he is stressed and dont take in the foods nutrients. But try! Dont give up!
I will call you squishy.

You might want to consider upgrading you tank either way. BTAs can get quite large and a 12g tank wont cut it.
They usually will hide for a little while though. It should eventually come out.
JoeysTheMan54 3 years ago
I know a 12g is small, but I got a friend that has like 5 salt tanks that will take it if it gets too big, or starts looking 'sad'. Thank you!

did you know that clown fish are immune to a sea anemone's sting? thats why this clown fish can do that without getting stung.
