@sidnazud Gadap, Kemari and Bin Qasim towns together comprises 70% of Karachi's area but still only 2.5 million people live there and remaining 16 million people live in this packed 30% area. The total area of Karachi is much larger than Mumbai. Karachi is spread over an area of 3,530 sq.km, where as Mumbai had an area of 603 sq.km.( Check wikipedia or any other reliable source). This is the reason Mumbai looks so congested with population bursting at its seams. Karachi is nicely spread out and looks more well planned

Just add barren land to city areas and population density can be decreased artificially.(see map of karachi on wikipedia).
Also 603 Sq km is the area of Mumbai Island. Mumbai metropolitan area comprises of three administrative divisions:- Mumbai Island, Thane and Navi Mumbai.

competing in cities looks like a funny idea. Both cities have its own challenges. Me being a Pakistani and Krachite would respect Mumbai as equall. Karachi is 50 years back from world's standard. Building bridges and flyovers with fancy lights ON doesnt mean that we have done our level best. We should rather improve on our traffic control and basic law enforcement which protects the public . u can't compare mumbai and karachi!!! its impossible cos mumbai is not competing with karachi.., thats why it goes on about shanghai karachi is good in its own level, but india and pakistan ar at differen levels of building cities .a good pace, but there are still many obstacles that need to be overcome. mumbai is at the next phase.building much bigger projects. its an alpha city, and i think karachi is beta- im not sure, u can check. however, being indian i am happy to see pak progress.

@dunsacc i appreciate your thinking about mumbai . Sure its an alpha city but what i think that its alpha interms of population and karachi is a beta city so in terms of population its correct . If mumbai is looking forward in becoming a shangai then its a good positve approach cuz shangai is a heavily populated city of china and to accomodate those people more and more investment pour into shangai mostly in construction. Mumbai on the other hand is doing the same.

And proof was that Mumbai attack was last terror incident in India. There has been no bomb blast or terror attack in India since than. Entire Pakistan GDP 2010 : 175 Billion USD. Mumbai alone GDP 2010 :217 Billion USD. So there is no sense of any comparison. Elevated freeways crossing one end to other end of Mumbai, Subway system, Monorail all are under construction in Mumbai.
