Quark always an important character in any episode he is in because he is a realist unlike most of the other characters who are positive or negative about things
Man, how many battles was Bashir involved in? He was fighting the Jem'hadar here, and there was at least one other where he was involved in a battle against the Klingons. Although he wasn't fighting in that one, he volunteered to go to a planet under attack and endured artillery fire to retrieve equipment from a shuttle. He was also recruited to spy on the Romulans by Section 31. Maybe its just me, but I think he should've been given a medal, especially given he isn't an actual soldier.
These are the episodes that caused Rick Berman concern saying this wasn't roddenberry version of star trek. i.e. death seen from afar not up close and personal.
But i think these episodes shows life can be the same now as in the 24th Century. which i think makes it more real.
@djslapdash Funny thing is, I just saw this episode and thought it was fantastic. Having sat through the awfulness of the whole of Voyager before seeing DS9, I have to say I am really impressed with the latter as a show, Trek or otherwise. I have a great nostalgia for TNG, but the whole Trek 'humans are so awesome' line never really sold to me. DS9 is the first Trek outside the movies that IMO portrays a believable universe.
@BanjoOz I had the same feeling. I saw DS9 years after it went off the air. Before I saw DS9, I was under the delusion that Voyager was a good Trek show. Now the episodes are almost unwatchable.
Why does no one have a grenade launcher, or some mines, or a machinegun, or just a weapon that can hit reliably at more than ten feet? Those aliens are just running single file straight through the kill zone, and the Feddies still take losses.
I wish there had been a square up between the Klingons and the Jem'hadar in hand to hand combat, that would have been glorious, since both love hand to hand fighting.
Here's a thought: I wish they had done a war story where one of the sides employs more thoughtful tactics and combined arms stratagems than a stone age tribe. That would have been a nice change of pace as well.
Maybe do a time travel story, and get a contingent of Feddie troops slaughtered by a single Brittish WWII machinegun team, when they try their usual zergling rush against someone mildly competent.
this the best close quarter fighting in DS9 that i have seen aside from the Hand to Hand fighting in the DS9 season 4 episode 'To The Death'. If you are a Hard core trekkie you will know which episode i'm talking about.
But of course, I can never take something like this seriously. Despite the cloyingly tragic music (rather heavy-handed), I can rest easy knowing that no matter how many random Starfleet people die, the main cast is going to be safe and sound at the end.
In real war, no one is safe. It doesn't matter how important they are or how close you've grown to someone, anyone can take that next bullet, or get caught in the next explosion. Full scale war rarely works on TV -- but DS9 needed ratings...
i wish they had done an episode where klingon warriors and jem'hadar soldiers squared upto each other in hand to hand with the klingons having their bat'leths and the jem'hadar having their kar'tarkins which is the sword they use in the ds9 episode 'to the death' if anyone is wondering what it looks like.
Starfleet troops need to hit the track more often, they got tired from slaughtering jem hadar with knives.
Also Shimmerman's acting skills were ruined by the 5 pounds of plastic on his face, you'd think after 40 years of this they'd be able to move their mouths better.
"Duh, let's walk slowly forward and not take cover at all! And no suppressing fire! That means you, Krag'nor! Oh, and remember to not bring any grenades or other explosive devices!"
I couldn't agree more, a couple of squads of modern INF would have torn them apart. Yeah It's nice not having to reload every 30 shots (and ammo is heavy) but the phaser rifle is definitely not a INF weapon. Hell an a couple of American WW2 INF squads would have put them is serious jeopardy. Discounting the ship in orbit, purely on a INF level, the piece of non medical equipment I covet the most is the tri-corder.
Armin Shimerman as Quark is AMAZING in this episode. Just look at the emotion on his face. It's one of his very best performances and he was frankly one of the best actors on the show.
exactly, if they tossed even one decent grenade behind sisko and them, AR558 would have been theirs for the taking, oh and there's another word for Shock Troops, what is it? oh right, Stormtroopers! XD
First off they did shell them for awhile if I recall. Secondly their force was weakened and disorganized by the houndini mines as they came through the pass. Secondly they had been fighting for the planet for 8 months, it's possible supplies of things were depleted, lastly they thought they had those hidden subspace mines behind their lines and could activate them, but they didn't.
Problem with that line of reasoning, they didn't shell them at all.
2. Houdini Mines weren't terribly effective the way they were using them, since they were there for 8 months and suffered so few casualties.
3. the Defiant just showed up to resupply them, so both sides had fresh supplies, and the Jemmies had fresh troops.
4. this is, perhaps the single, most important ground installation, and the feddies can't be arsed to spare more than 150 troops? Canada wipe's their ass with 150 troops.
wel im no DS9 nut, but this battle looks remenisant of vietnam battles. NVA and vietcong tactis were very like this during the seig of Ka san, anbd the battle of la Drang vally. many a times they literly charged like ht e jem hadar are doing. its the only way to breach the perimeter of an entrenched enemy. simply overwelm them.
and to me the federation do an alright job, judging that they are probs starving and have no support.
"the only way to breach the perimeter of an entrenched enemy. simply overwhelm them." yeah, tell that to the germans and allies in World War 1. all the Federation needed here was some form of HMG, GPMG or even SAW. hell, a pair Maxim guns or Vickers guns would have been enough.
the best way to breach an entrenched enemy is to either A. exploit a weakness such as attacking from the top of the canyon to either side of the feddies rather than funnel through it or B. use Artillery and Vehicles.
and since for some reason in the 24th century the concept of Tanks and ground artillery is alien to both the Federation and the Dominion (the best they've got are Dune Buggies!) their best cource of action would have been
for the defenders to set up two machine guns, one in the canyon and another on top, the 2nd gun doesn't even need to be manned, just pointed in the same general area as the first, when the crew of the first spot the jem hadar, they fire, and the jem hadar are cut to shreds.
the crew of the 2nd gun fire when they see the muzzle flash of the first, or are at least aware the first gun is firing.
to attack the position, the use of climbing gear such as grappling hooks are required, maneuver not through the canyon but above it, position themselves above the defenders to either side, drop a few grenades, 1 modern frag grenade lobbed behind them would have killed sisko, bashir, ezri, Billy Mumy's character, the panicky guy I call Hudson, and the crazy guy I call Drake
but since Jem hadar grenades ammount up to firecrackers (the one they bounced down the stairs in "What you leave behind" didn't wouldn't have even worked as well as a flash bang) It's unlikely this tactic would work with such poor weapons, they would need proper grenades, possibly even a few stun grenades (grenades that fire a wide beam stun from multiple emmiters, with only enough strength for one shot, the problem of wide beam phasers being only good short range would actually be of benefit).
wel from attacking point of view u cant just arty them to death.
and atack from a canyon wat bolloks is that? which army in the right mind would entrench themselves at the bottom of a canyon?!?!? tacticaly shooting themselves in the foot
the federation... and arty isn't for killing them all outright, since you need the facility intact, it's just to soften them up for the vehicles to engage. The AR-558 array was in a cave, the mouth of the cave led into a canyon, the Federation guys set up their defense OUTSIDE the mouth of said cave...
so i'm not argueing about your entrench at the bottom of a canyon thing, but since the Federation have NO army, just glorified away teams of starship security personel, my point still stands.
I blame the lack of preperation the Federation have for this problem, they expect there to always be a peacefull solution to the point where they don't even practice martial abilities, they experience in space travel is one thing, but "Armies" in Star Trek are nothing more than Away teams deployed en mass, no LAVs or Tanks, no artillery, no support weapons. Hell, the Royal Security Forces and Trade Federation from Star Wars Episode 1 are better equipped than any Star Trek reace...
That's not a "nice video". That's the most violent and dark scene in Star Trek history- and it's brilliant. I love the bit where Quark blasts the Jem'Hadar which breaks into sickbay.

How is it that fighting with futuristic phaser weapons looks like something out of the napoleonic wars? Bows and arrows would be more dangerous.
Let's have blowguns and poison darts for some real drama.
