As for the athletes, I think anyone would agree that they make way too much money, however the amount they receive from sponsors, including Nike is based off the popularity of the athlete. Nike sponsors athletes to promote their product, and sales of their product go towards paying their employees, making donations, paying taxes, and of course paying their management including Phil Knight for piecing it all together.

Nike is doing what many other shoe manufacturers are doing: producing shoes at the expenses of poor people. You may say: better $5 a day than nothing, but that's not the point. It's how money is made along the supply chain. Analyzes the price, cost and profit structure and you will understand why Nike (and all those others) are fundamentally bad companies.

A common misunderstanding. These countries were much better off before U.S. interference. They were forced into poverty by structural adjustment policies that caused them to shut down their own production in favor of cheap imports. It was hoped they could jump right into rapid industrialization if you just fed them, but it was a massive failure every time. The countries were decimated and now constitute a massive pool of slave-wage labor.
