Actually, there aren't 10 people per year per house. Rather it depends on the influx of students in any given year. As an example, Gryffindor do have five boys in Harry's years but they only have three girls. You could argue that there are more than five (and even JK Rowling said there were two more girls in Gryffindor) but as we never actually see them in the book we can't say that they were actually there.

Either way, five per house is probably the best way to put it. Go Ravenclaw!
