I'm against corporate welfare, but am also enough of a realist to understand that if a company (and although YouTube is owned by Google, it's still a company in its own right) continually loses money, it will be shut down.
Yeah, but that doesn't explain how Youtube siphons views off of the average channels and puts them on the corporate mega-channels. They manipulate what gets put on the front page. If no one ultimately wants that then who benefits? Only the corporate mega-conglomerates do. Do you really want all of Youtube to be owned by Disney? Because that is the direction we are headed right now.
Plus, there is NO reason why corporate ads should obscure visibility for the average viewer.
Anything which takes power out of the hands of massive corporate advertisers and puts them in the hands of the average person, I am going to be for. Youtube could run on donations, or find some other way to break even. They do not need to sell themselves out to corporate advertisers just to stay alive.
And just because there are no corporate ads now doesn't mean there won't be any in the future. Most of the corp. ads right now have been 1-stared to death, because of the political climate here.
If a company could store the massive number of videos with only donations or other means to stay afloat, why hasn't any occurred yet? Even Hulu is losing tons of money.
While Metacafe-who never had their heads up their asses- are doing fine advertising on all videos. Youtube shot itself in the balls by trying to form a money click with it's partner program. Even in hard times it's hard to have sympathy for those who bury themselves. Youtube is the GM of the internet.
Yes, you are right. Youtube/Google is another American corporate failure. And like most failing American companies the only way they can think of to bail their sinking ship is to 1. kiss more corporate ass. 2. Shaft the consumer.
That's right consumer, who do you think Youtube's corporate advertisers are advertising to except Youtube users. How does poor ole Youtube justify bankrupting the 3rd most popular website on the internet?
Nice video. I really enjoyed watching it. I am running a marketing campaign to start a large auto detailing chain corporation. I would really like your assistance in building this enterprise. Let me know what you think by checking out my channel. Thanks
blackwall500 you talk a load of BS. if phasing to Hulutube means they can actually keep it running, even if the community is hidden away, that's better than nothing. google could just say fuck it and close the site down, they own it after all, not you. and they're paying for it, not you. they can do wtf they like, so don't get upset cuz you thought you owned part of something special that you don't. and get your fucking facts right before bullshitting.
youtube is a free site... they give US money as long as we get the number of views... they will not delete popular channels because they would lose views..... plus, say that a every 2 or 3 videos is 1 gb.. and perhaps it costs them 10 dollars per 10 gb. now multiply that by a few BILLION/MILLION.... you have NO idea what you're talking about. they lose money everyday, therefore they need ads to help them pay for it. plus you won't get suspended if you don't abuse other users.. so stop talking bs
Its is so tipical of these youtube morons man don't get so worked up over them.
They want everything free, they bitch and complain about adverts even though some make money cause them.
Personally i want youtube on a profit the more money it makes the better the services. Not just leaching money from google to pay for the bandwidth and storage costs used to sustain so many stupid peoples videos "about nothing " for free
So... because someone makes a lot of money, they owe everyone else a free ride?
Google already provides things like Google Maps, Latitude, Calendar, Document, Books, etc... entirely free to users. They should keep giving more, right?
I'm curious, what percentage of your personal wages should be taken away and given to everyone else?
How many of your cellphone minutes should you give away to people you don't even know?
Hell no, I don't make enough to give to my money away but If I was making pointless amounts of money that I couldn't spend in a day what would it hurt bill gates who makes millions every minutes to give a bit of his money to a good cause right? If he can give to charity, this is just one more charity...And I think this is a myth it wont really happen..
Exactly the point of our society. To make money. The homeless analogy is dead on. To say Google/Bill Gates/Steve Jobs make to much money and should give us free stuff is the same as the guy on the corner that wants your change.
If someone owns a successful company, then buys another one that loses money the answer is simple. Change the one thats costing money and not earning it, or dump it. To take from the successful to give to the losing makes no sence.
imagine a commercial popping up on every video you click on that would last at least 30 seconds to 1 minute. on average i watch at least 20 videos everytime i log into youtube . 1minute X 20 videos=20 minutes worth of commercials
you would be donating 20 minutes per day atleast on corporate advertising .
and that dosent count the advertising u are exposed to on other sites and your cable tv .
all together the average person probly watches 3+hours of commercials per day.
You've got it right. He who pays the piper calls the tune. Those who piss in the piper's begging hat can go fuck themselves.
If you want a free platform for your propaganda you have to accept some commercial compromise somewhere. Otherwise you buy all the server-time yourself. I have been spreading my propaganda for free for ten years now, I have to be grateful to those who enable me to do it. There is no basic human right to a free uncensored global video presence.
Youtube need advertisers yes but they are planning to "sell" youtube the big corperations like Disney and Nickelodeon, those big corporations will take over youtube. They will become partners and all of their T.V. shows and movies will be on the front page crippling all the other youtube channels. Big channels like Fred and TheAmazingAtheist will be small compared to the corporations channels.
Hulu tube its not a good thing since it is making the smaller channel like us hou has less then 50,000 subs get banned since we are growing and its goin to disturb the big companey like disney and hulu. and hulutube is going to take our right of freedom of speech and even the freedom that we have online, ill give you a good example nigahiga's how to be gangster got banned and look at fred vids there getting famous.. for being crap and since fred allied with disney.. it got all of its views
why care if Fred is famous? I found the YTubers I like by response videos, related videos, video searches, etc. I don't thinkI've ever watched a Fred video. Sounds like you have more jealousy than anything else.
If YT starts banning tons of people without a decent reason, then other YTubers will leave and YT will lose prominence.
You don't have total free speech on YT. You agreed to the terms and conditions and there are restrictions on there.
i think "hulu"tube will be a good thing. because or veiws will go UPcoz of all the new viewers, and + it will stop youtube going BUST. there we GO. and + its so they can compete with hulu.. and u no what youtube has and hulu hasnt? US. a huge built in community. this site will get more veiws THAN hulu, and our vids veiws will go UP. I SUPPORT "HULU"TUBE!!!
Money is a necessary evil. Youtube will have to up its advertisement to avoid going bankrupt. If it goes bankrupt, of course, then nobody's happy. The happy medium, of course, is to have more advertising, as they have been doing, while keeping Youtube's influence in the hands of the average user. Since advertisers can simply threaten to pull support if things don't go their way, it's difficult to pull this off, and this is where the controversy emerges.
There is a difference between freedom of speech and a business being forced to act as a mouthpiece for anyone and everyone's speech.
Basically, YT isn't stifling your ability to say whatever you want... they're just not required to let you say whatever you want on their site. Make a site of your own instead.
The problem is, you'd run into the same problems they did. You need a flagging system to avoid contracted crime, snuff videos, DMCSA, etc. which would then be misused
"when he actively told people to complain to youtube's advertising channel"=spamming.
I agree that filing false claims is a problem... but what do you want YT to do? They need a means to filter improper videos... how do you propose they do that without it costing significantly more money?
Mr. Rational, this is all very interesting. However, I have much more pertinent question. What happened at min... 1:32 to 1:36? It sounds like something was dying in the backround or choking. Shhh.... everyone listen
Oh, that's my videocamera's miniDV powering down. I was doing a digital feed straight from the videocamera so it wasn't using the miniDV and automatically powered itself down.
ok if you they cant afford for us to post and for us to watch their videos then how did you tube last this long then? think about it they have pleanty of money like billions and billions all they want to do hulu tube for is to get more greed
It's called "Venture Capital". People and companies dumped money into Google & YouTube thinking that popularity=revenue. Remember the dotcom crash? Yeah, the same thing happened back then.
Now that venture capital has mostly dried up, these cash sinkholes need to start showing revenue.
I agree that youtube has been footing the bill for everything. However, advertisers need to think critically about the content of videos AND comment threads before associating themselves with the youtube 'brand.' So far, youtube has done next to nothing to police the trolls, votebots and stalkers. Until they take this issue seriously, rather than giving us non-working dummy tools to report abuse, they will be a risky investment.
How do you propose that YT stops trolls? The moment they try, people will scream that YT is stopping free speech.
Any system used to rank videos, or ban videos will eventually be abused by some people wishing to downgrade vids that go against their opinions (i.e. vote-boting).
They could at least be policed to prevent comments which slander people, are outright abusive or potentially harmful. There is a troll out there for instance who calls me a "legless pants shitter" because I'm in a wheelchair. He also rags on me for rising above my handicap to be a nurse. People like this need to be permenantly banned from youtube and all other public forums. That isn't free speech. It's just abuse.
So, who watches the watchman? Who is the police and who ensures that they don't overstretch their boundaries?
BTW, yes. Insulting you with stupid comments IS a part of free speech.
There should be some accountability for speech... if a person commits slander, then they should face repercussions, but that is next to impossible to enforce on the internet.
nah, people don't understand that. they understand that there's changes and they don't like that because they've just got used to the way things are now.
Back when the economy was flush with cash, things like YT were heavily invested in, even though they had no idea on how to make money. With the economy in the crapper, venture capital funds have dried up.
YT still makes great news & is a popular site, but that doesn't mean that it can continue to lose almost a half billion dollars each year.
they are still making a profit.... they have lost (not even close to that much money) in projected profits on how much company's spend on advertising. so no, the current business format is not a failure. This is being done because there not making as much as they were last year and they miss that so there going to do whatever they can to make more way more than enough money
I encourage free expression in comments except for things like threats of violence, release of other's personal information, or blatant spam. You are inviolation of spamming. Do so again and you will be blocked. This is your warning.
wow, you put up a good point, but my question is, once teh system changes, what percentage of youtube will be coporate? enough to pay the bills? or will we have to pay for them?
Youtube doesn't want to keep the video stream in the browser cache, instead having users re-download it every time they re-watch it, because it wants to go bankrupt. The You Tube has become self aware and our decadence has caused it to become suicidal and parasitic to Google. The end is near my brothers.
No it's really bad, have you see one of the first examples, it's a 22 min video by happy tree friends.
It starts off in the big screen has a lights out button and you start off with a 30 sec video advert, then you get 7 mins of footage then another 30 sec advert, then another 7 mins and another one at the end.
When the advert comes on you can't skip past it there is no close button for it you have to watch it all.
Search for happy tree friends The Third Degree to see what hulutube may be.
Very true. Youtube does need to pay for the bandwith, not us so THAT part I agree with.
Thing that I don't agree with: I'll admit I'm not really effected much by it for I'm not a very popular Youtuber, but at the same time it does effect how much independent videos are noticed. They may not be intentionally blowing us off for finacial reasons, yet Youtube has now grown to commercial, counting on partners and killing off more minor channels like yours and mine.
I've been with YT since the beginning. Two of my vids still have "all-time" honors... yet, I've never been featured.
It's not YT killing off small-time channels, it's people falsely flagging (or sometimes correctly flagging) videos and channels that violate the terms of use.
Do you honestly think that some YT employees sit around and conspire against specific users? Think about how many channels and how many vids there are.
K. I see your point there. Lots of channels, thats pretty obvious and true Honors doesn't always mean featured. I never said anything about YT going against CERTAIN users and I also never said anything about being featured or honors.
I just feel that while Youtube does need that money they don't have to promote so much because then it brings down the more independent audience and not just for me alone. It's just how I see it and I'm not some puppet of realweeklynews.
You're more than welcome to your opinion... I'm just curious as to how you expect YT to bring in a half billion dollars without trying to cater to advertisers.
They can't eliminate user-content, because then they'd lose the community & they'd be nothing to distinguish them from their competitors. They can't be solely user content because then they'd lose even more money.
Please do not spam my vids. I'm beginning to think that you're just a sock account for realweeklynews. Consider this a warning. Spam again and you will be blocked.
I am a strong proponent of free speech, however, that does not mean that I will allow people to use my vids and channel to merely promote spam. This is your warning. Do so again and you will be blocked.
Okay... I'll give you that. They do need to pay for their bandwidth and they should be making money. That still doesn't justify messing with the view counters and it doesn't justify the flaws in their copyright policy. We're not talking about being anti capitalism we're saying that we want our videos to have the same chances as everybody else.
Are they really messing with view counts? Think about how many vids are constantly uploaded. Do you really think that some YouTube executive sits in front of 50 computer screens, watching to see if an atheist uploads a video he doesn't like?
The view counts update at a different rate than ratings.
Sorry Imrational, youve got the whole argument wrong.. Advertising is not a problem though plastering Ad banners "over" video's is totally f*cked up. As for addtional HULU type content, again this is no problem.. The problem is that Google intent to f*ck around with the democratic engine that Youtube is based on..They can add as much extra sh*t as they want to but if corperate infulence can change the video listing preference's then we have all lost the digital democracy that Youtube is.
HERE HERE, and in losing the democratic engine you lose the main drive for the majority to participate hence no cash revenue for the big bad corporation to exploit:D
Sorry i dont follow your point..The primary basis of Youtube is that people "us" effectively pick what content is good and what is bad, what is true and what is BS all by giving out ratings, votes and view counts. This then governs what video's are likely to be seen by most people. This is called a democratic system. If these proposed changes are true then corporations and political powers will be able to manipulate this process..Dont you see this as being a problem at all ?
The voter bot issue only affected a small part of Youtube and since then its been fixed anyway. So what your saying is that everything we see and hear on YT is due to voter bot's.? If so why aren't we seeing dodgy viagra AD's on every page? but your also saying that manipulation of voting is ok as long as corporations do it ? They make profit from advertising and Hulu content. If these other changes are true then its just a grab back of control which the media lost when the internet came out.
If all of this is true and YouTube needs even MORE advertisers than there were already than YouTube would have gone bye bye 5 years ago.
The new YouTube is about making billions and billions of dollars over the backs of the fans that build it up, period. If Youtube didnt had fans than it wouldnt be this big.
So instead of pleasing the fans we get fucked in the ass and you sir are contributing to that ass fucking.
There's still the question of consumer interest. Youtube doesn't want to lose business to other video databases and we should speak our minds when we're starting to find that Youtube are making their site less user friendly.
Never mind the bandwagon pukemongers. The basis of the critique is still true. We just want Youtube to be a useful tool.
How is YT making their site less user friendly? Adding in corporate material will hopefully pull in more ad revenue (to help YT stay afloat), more viewers to come and watch movies & shows who can then move to smaller channels and into the community.
Conveniently I can refer to the viral video that spurred your video, since you've watched it. It brings up several points. The most important has to do with finding useful channels at all. I'm sure YT could find ways to place their adverts that wouldn't in effect block the real user channels. Now it seems YT cares less about the quality of their site and more about the revenues and I'm saying that could backfire, so even strictly for business it may not be a wise choice.
Okay, advertising is perverse. Who actually clicks on YT ads? I never have. So, if the ads are not generating any clicks... why will companies pay a lot of money for them?
I think it's funny that I am the one being accused of being manipulated, seeing that I quoted articles and fact while realweeklynews continues with blatant manipulation methods.
Maybe Youtube can grow some corporate balls and tell other companies to **** OFF. :) That and let the ignorant people of the world waste their money on the internet *cough* sense liberty rules online not democracy, find some ****ing common sense
Okay, continue. Who does the work required to make everything? What kind of renumeration do they receive for their efforts compared to the people who sit on their asses?
We would see a large portion of humanity stop working and just living off the fat of others. If I didn't have to worry about paying for things, I would father as many children as I could.
That's why your system won't work. There is no incentive to conserve.
The tragedy of the commons usually points out that shared resources are over-utilized and are destroyed. One way is to have a centralized government body, the other method (which has been very successful) is thru privatization.
I'm saying that your system of communal sharing would not work at this point in time (if ever). It would be a "tragedy of the commons". It would punish the hard-working and support the lazy.
Privatization has been successful? What a joke - yes, exploitation of the third world is success (et al).
Also, the notion that people should have to 'work' for the necessities of life in an era where automated technology could easily provide for everyone in abundance (right now) is ludicrous. There is very little 'work' in our society that is actually relevant (labor vs. socially constructive jobs).
It should be noted, that people are not 'naturally lazy'. They are made lazy by their culture.
If it does abhor communism and exalts privitization (or capitalism), then why is it bad when those free market investors each utilized the land the way they wanted? They were exercising their rights in a free market capitalistic society.
There are certain vids that YT cannot allow. The sheer volume of vids uploaded on a constant basis makes it damn near impossible for them to rely on paid workers to make distinctions between allowable and not. Also, how would they deal with the biases of the people making the judgements?
Meta-gaming of the site is impossible to stop. Right now, the system is flawed, but still usable.
Let me ask you... what REALISTIC methods would you suggest to fix the problems?
For many years YT allowed channels like TheKingOfTheMountain to upload illegal material, I tried to report channles like that many times but u can see it right now, nothing changed. Why they send me a Copyright Alert for a video where I talk about something that has nothing to do with copyright and dosnt break any YT term of service and it's just a 5 views video? I tried to hide many videos and YT keeps sending alerts and bad ratings to my hidden videos with Zero views... (continues)
If YT needs cash they can put any Ads and Banner on my videos but dont touch ratings and dont send me those stupid copyright alerts, they could make some new service like premium accounts and things like that if they really need some money.
Yes this is so true.. google purchased youtube for $1 000 000 000 or something like that, I think it´s even more. Youtube isn´t some sort of charity it´s a business.
Why? Don't just spout what you've heard in that meta-gaming mirrored video... explain it yourself. Then explain what YT should do to make up for a projected yearly loss of $470,000,000.
I have over 100 ideas to keep the YOU in youTUBE and still earn money:
001. wiki Affiliate_marketing
002. all gathered intel, use it for better content-marketing
003. reward REAL unique contributers, they can do their art -full time- or -part time- that generates even more revenue (just study the revver(dot)com concept, please do NOT be focused on you shill propaganda for a change)
4. let people see only 10% preview, everyone has to sign up register for free for the rest 90%
I know a lot of people who would be upset with data-gathering. Also, many people would just lie about demographic informaiton. Also, who is going to buy that possibly false information? What information can be gathered about watching videos about little boys being numb from the dentist or watching two girls do scat play from a cup? What revenue does registration generate? It's just more memory storage increasing storage costs.
I use a sevrer with 750 Gig web space and 7,5 Terrabyte (1000Gig) traffic allowed per month for 6.35 euro per month PLUS i get 2 months extra, for free, for every new clicked costumer via special coupon code on a banner on my site!
That is aprox 1 cent (!) for every 1 Gig webspace per month with the possibility that I never have to pay anymore if i have an average of 1 new costumer per 2 months.
again... if people are generating false accounts in order to watch the videos they want, like entering an age of "99" and changing their location... how valid will this information be?
The thing that some people are arguing that youtube we focus all of its energy and will please its major business people in any way to get money. By doing that they throw out the main focus of the user and give their focus to the advertisers, and by that they distory what youtube was founded on. We dont have a problem with advertisers, we just have a problem with putting them first.
In my opinion, I don't care if they reallly make a tab for all these different things, it makes it easier to search through videos.
I just do not want youtube's main focus on how the advertisers are doing. If they focus on the advertisers more than the consumers, it's like treating us like objects. Youtube should have more open dialouge with its users, a better DMCA reform for people who had videos under fair use to voice themself, and other things I can't fit in this little space.
How are we consumers of YouTube? What have you purchased from them? What financial transaction occurred between you and YouTube?
I agree that flagging campaigns suck, but considering the sheer volume of vids on here, it has to be automated. No matter what system is used, it will be metagamed at some point.
Well if we are not the consumers than who is? I think that we are the consumers because if we never came here in the first place it would not be here at all. By watching the videos and registering with youtube I belive that we are the consumers (of course this is my opinion).
If course it has to be automated, I agree, but they still need a reform in order to catch the real videos that fall through the cracks. Maybe a team to look over videos people appealed saying they were not copyrighted.
You are welcome to your opinion, but it disregards the commonly held definition of consumer.
If you want to use the idea of consumers, then we help produce YT's product, which is "people watching/uploading videos here". They attempt to sell this product (i.e. us) to advertisers. The advertisers are actually their consumers, not us. (granted it's actually more complicated than that, but I hope you get my point).
As to hiring a team, you want them to spend MORE money?!? :D
You do make very good points, but taking away the fat of this conversation what the main point is is that Youtube needs to listen to the users (us), and keep their main focus to us and not the advertisers, what people fear from this transformation.
What this whole "Hulutube Debacle" thing is is that people think that youtube will take their main focus from us to the advertisers and pleasing there every need/want and not listen to what the user say/need/want.
Capitalist pigs.

Regardless, what if a lot of homeless people suddenly decided that you make too much money? My point is, such things are subjective.
imrational 2 years ago
Exactly the point of our society. To make money. The homeless analogy is dead on. To say Google/Bill Gates/Steve Jobs make to much money and should give us free stuff is the same as the guy on the corner that wants your change.
If someone owns a successful company, then buys another one that loses money the answer is simple. Change the one thats costing money and not earning it, or dump it. To take from the successful to give to the losing makes no sence.

imagine a commercial popping up on every video you click on that would last at least 30 seconds to 1 minute. on average i watch at least 20 videos everytime i log into youtube . 1minute X 20 videos=20 minutes worth of commercials
you would be donating 20 minutes per day atleast on corporate advertising .
and that dosent count the advertising u are exposed to on other sites and your cable tv .
all together the average person probly watches 3+hours of commercials per day.
still sound good?

Youtube need advertisers yes but they are planning to "sell" youtube the big corperations like Disney and Nickelodeon, those big corporations will take over youtube. They will become partners and all of their T.V. shows and movies will be on the front page crippling all the other youtube channels. Big channels like Fred and TheAmazingAtheist will be small compared to the corporations channels.
DeynisStudios 2 years ago
DeynisStudios,
Previously, did you watch shows on sites other than YT? I did and still do. I also still watch small channel vids on YT.
If people can already watch those "Corporate Channels" and still watch YT vids, what exactly are you complaining about?
imrational 2 years ago
Hulu tube its not a good thing since it is making the smaller channel like us hou has less then 50,000 subs get banned since we are growing and its goin to disturb the big companey like disney and hulu. and hulutube is going to take our right of freedom of speech and even the freedom that we have online, ill give you a good example nigahiga's how to be gangster got banned and look at fred vids there getting famous.. for being crap and since fred allied with disney.. it got all of its views
Bob300012 2 years ago
Bob300012,
why care if Fred is famous?

WHAT?! HOW CAN YOU SAY THIS??!!!!
1plusshift 2 years ago
Money is a necessary evil. Youtube will have to up its advertisement to avoid going bankrupt. If it goes bankrupt, of course, then nobody's happy. The happy medium, of course, is to have more advertising, as they have been doing, while keeping Youtube's influence in the hands of the average user. Since advertisers can simply threaten to pull support if things don't go their way, it's difficult to pull this off, and this is where the controversy emerges.
himethisisme 2 years ago
voiceofreason467,
There is a difference between freedom of speech and a business being forced to act as a mouthpiece for anyone and everyone's speech.

It's called "Venture Capital". People and companies dumped money into Google & YouTube thinking that popularity=revenue. Remember the dotcom crash? Yeah, the same thing happened back then.
Now that venture capital has mostly dried up, these cash sinkholes need to start showing revenue.
imrational 2 years ago
I agree that youtube has been footing the bill for everything. However, advertisers need to think critically about the content of videos AND comment threads before associating themselves with the youtube 'brand.' So far, youtube has done next to nothing to police the trolls, votebots and stalkers. Until they take this issue seriously, rather than giving us non-working dummy tools to report abuse, they will be a risky investment.
Blankfrack 2 years ago
Blankfrack,
How do you propose that YT stops trolls? The moment they try, people will scream that YT is stopping free speech.
Any system used to rank videos, or ban videos will eventually be abused by some people wishing to downgrade vids that go against their opinions (i.e. vote-boting).
So, how do you propose they fix these problems?
imrational 2 years ago
They could at least be policed to prevent comments which slander people, are outright abusive or potentially harmful. There is a troll out there for instance who calls me a "legless pants shitter" because I'm in a wheelchair. He also rags on me for rising above my handicap to be a nurse. People like this need to be permenantly banned from youtube and all other public forums. That isn't free speech. It's just abuse.
Blankfrack 2 years ago
Blankfrack,
So, who watches the watchman? Who is the police and who ensures that they don't overstretch their boundaries?
BTW, yes. Insulting you with stupid comments IS a part of free speech.
There should be some accountability for speech... if a person commits slander, then they should face repercussions, but that is next to impossible to enforce on the internet.
imrational 2 years ago
nah, people don't understand that. they understand that there's changes and they don't like that because they've just got used to the way things are now.

I'll stay with my opinion.
IdioticGeniusVideos 2 years ago
IDGV,
I've been with YT since the beginning.
Think about how many channels and how many vids there are.
imrational 2 years ago
My opinion still stands.
IdioticGeniusVideos 2 years ago
IdioticGeniusVideos,
You're more than welcome to your opinion... I'm just curious as to how you expect YT to bring in a half billion dollars without trying to cater to advertisers.
They can't eliminate user-content, because then they'd lose the community & they'd be nothing to distinguish them from their competitors. They can't be solely user content because then they'd lose even more money.

I am a strong proponent of free speech, however, that does not mean that I will allow people to use my vids and channel to merely promote spam. This is your warning. Do so again and you will be blocked.
imrational 2 years ago
Okay... I'll give you that. They do need to pay for their bandwidth and they should be making money. That still doesn't justify messing with the view counters and it doesn't justify the flaws in their copyright policy. We're not talking about being anti capitalism we're saying that we want our videos to have the same chances as everybody else.
PhilosophyMeditation 2 years ago
PhilosophyMeditation,
Are they really messing with view counts? Think about how many vids are constantly uploaded. Do you really think that some YouTube executive sits in front of 50 computer screens, watching to see if an atheist uploads a video he doesn't like?
The view counts update at a different rate than ratings.
imrational 2 years ago
Just because it hasn't affected you doesn't mean it hasn't affected other people. Athiest or not
PhilosophyMeditation 2 years ago
Sorry Imrational, youve got the whole argument wrong.. Advertising is not a problem though plastering Ad banners "over" video's is totally f*cked up. As for addtional HULU type content, again this is no problem.. The problem is that Google intent to f*ck around with the democratic engine that Youtube is based on..They can add as much extra sh*t as they want to but if corperate infulence can change the video listing preference's then we have all lost the digital democracy that Youtube is.
ViperWK 2 years ago
HERE HERE, and in losing the democratic engine you lose the main drive for the majority to participate hence no cash revenue for the big bad corporation to exploit:D
SMoldie 2 years ago
ViperWK,
Democratic engine?!? Being featured has never been democratic. Two of my vids still have "all-time" honors and have never been featured.
Do I bitch that YT is oppressing me? No. Because they are not.
imrational 2 years ago
Sorry i dont follow your point..The primary basis of Youtube is that people "us" effectively pick what content is good and what is bad, what is true and what is BS all by giving out ratings, votes and view counts. This then governs what video's are likely to be seen by most people. This is called a democratic system. If these proposed changes are true then corporations and political powers will be able to manipulate this process..Dont you see this as being a problem at all ?
ViperWK 2 years ago
ViperWK,
The ratings & view counts system has inherent flaws, it is subject to vote-boting by people with personal agendas.
Besides that, if YT isn't able to make a profit, then your "process" will cease to exist when Google stops funding the money pit that is YT.
imrational 2 years ago
The voter bot issue only affected a small part of Youtube and since then its been fixed anyway. So what your saying is that everything we see and hear on YT is due to voter bot's.? If so why aren't we seeing dodgy viagra AD's on every page? but your also saying that manipulation of voting is ok as long as corporations do it ? They make profit from advertising and Hulu content. If these other changes are true then its just a grab back of control which the media lost when the internet came out.

imrational 2 years ago
There's still the question of consumer interest. Youtube doesn't want to lose business to other video databases and we should speak our minds when we're starting to find that Youtube are making their site less user friendly.
Never mind the bandwagon pukemongers. The basis of the critique is still true. We just want Youtube to be a useful tool.
Skrofler 2 years ago
Skrolfer,
How is YT making their site less user friendly? Adding in corporate material will hopefully pull in more ad revenue (to help YT stay afloat), more viewers to come and watch movies & shows who can then move to smaller channels and into the community.
imrational 2 years ago
Conveniently I can refer to the viral video that spurred your video, since you've watched it. It brings up several points. The most important has to do with finding useful channels at all. I'm sure YT could find ways to place their adverts that wouldn't in effect block the real user channels. Now it seems YT cares less about the quality of their site and more about the revenues and I'm saying that could backfire, so even strictly for business it may not be a wise choice.
Skrofler 2 years ago
Skrofler,
I don't know how you find the channels you sub too, but I usually do by using the "search" feature and also by word of mouth here on YT.

brentoneccles,
Um... yeah. and exactly how will trade work in your world?
imrational 2 years ago
You only need trade in a scarcity environment.
With our technology today we have the ability to create an abundance of resources/education/etc for every single human being on the planet.
Money requires things to be scarce for profit, and that's holding this back.

Machine automation. We have the technology today to automate the distribution and production of resources.

imrational 2 years ago
So you uphold some form of Communism/Socialism then?
Sounds that way by the notion that what is upheld in that article is management by centralised government bodies, etc,.
brentoneccles 2 years ago
brentoneccles,
The tragedy of the commons usually points out that shared resources are over-utilized and are destroyed. One way is to have a centralized government body, the other method (which has been very successful) is thru privatization.
I'm saying that your system of communal sharing would not work at this point in time (if ever). It would be a "tragedy of the commons". It would punish the hard-working and support the lazy.
imrational 2 years ago
Privatization has been successful? What a joke - yes, exploitation of the third world is success (et al).
Also, the notion that people should have to 'work' for the necessities of life in an era where automated technology could easily provide for everyone in abundance (right now) is ludicrous. There is very little 'work' in our society that is actually relevant (labor vs. socially constructive jobs).
It should be noted, that people are not 'naturally lazy'. They are made lazy by their culture.
brentoneccles 2 years ago
brentoneccles,
Sigh. Read up on "tragedy of the commons". Exploitation of the 3rd world is a strawman argument outside of what I was talking about.

VPerVaFFa,
There are certain vids that YT cannot allow.
Let me ask you... what REALISTIC methods would you suggest to fix the problems?
imrational 2 years ago
For many years YT allowed channels like TheKingOfTheMountain to upload illegal material, I tried to report channles like that many times but u can see it right now, nothing changed. Why they send me a Copyright Alert for a video where I talk about something that has nothing to do with copyright and dosnt break any YT term of service and it's just a 5 views video? I tried to hide many videos and YT keeps sending alerts and bad ratings to my hidden videos with Zero views... (continues)
VPerVaFFa 2 years ago
if it happens to your channel, what are you going to do? just wait for your account to get suspended?
VPerVaFFa 2 years ago
VPErVaFFa,
YT wasn't "allowing" illegal material, the ones who got away with it just didn't generate enough flags to be taken down.
As to your zero view/hidden videos, there were something about your videos that hit their algorithm scanner as copyrighted material.

Yes this is so true.. google purchased youtube for $1 000 000 000 or something like that, I think it´s even more. Youtube isn´t some sort of charity it´s a business.

hulutube is BAD!

hammerbro99,
Why? Don't just spout what you've heard in that meta-gaming mirrored video... explain it yourself. Then explain what YT should do to make up for a projected yearly loss of $470,000,000.

Sellout.

these2menrgannadoit,
How am I being a sellout? I'm being realistic and thinking rationally.
None of my vids have ever been featured. I've never received any money from YT, I'm not even a partner.
Considering the amount of hate mail I've gotten from this vid, I've been anything other than a sellout.

imrational ... you FORGET ... W H Y ... YOUtube was getting very big in the first place ... WAKE UP man !

ExomatrixTV,
I know why YT got so big... but how does that generate into money to pay for operational costs?
$470,000,000.00
That's a lot of change to lose. How many companies would be willing to burn that kinda cash every year?
YT needs to start earning more money or it will fold.

ExomatrixTV,
I know a lot of people who would be upset with data-gathering. Also, many people would just lie about demographic informaiton. Also, who is going to buy that possibly false information? What information can be gathered about watching videos about little boys being numb from the dentist or watching two girls do scat play from a cup? What revenue does registration generate? It's just more memory storage increasing storage costs.
You keep calling me a shill. Back that up.

ExomatrixTV,
Good refutation of ONE of my points. Now you just need to address all the other flaws I pointed out with with your proposals.

100% true, but you "forget" to mention that ANYONE should know what you clicked upon when you "ACCEPT" "agreed" with the YouTube Agreements !
STUDY YouTube Liability Disclaimer and Agreements use of Privacy information for "services" AND affiliated companies
Most (sub)consciously know that ANY information collected about you is worth money
Who is fooling who ? ;o)

ExomatrixTV,
again... if people are generating false accounts in order to watch the videos they want, like entering an age of "99" and changing their location... how valid will this information be?

"false accounts" problem can be solved easely (and you know it) ...

Youtube vs The Users (Part 3): watch?v=8YRVty_ggRc
ExomatrixTV 2 years ago
The thing that some people are arguing that youtube we focus all of its energy and will please its major business people in any way to get money. By doing that they throw out the main focus of the user and give their focus to the advertisers, and by that they distory what youtube was founded on. We dont have a problem with advertisers, we just have a problem with putting them first.
EricBoisen 2 years ago
EricBoisen,
If YT can't get enough advertisers with the current format, they're going to have to try and woe them in with other methods.
What are your suggestions?
imrational 2 years ago
In my opinion, I don't care if they reallly make a tab for all these different things, it makes it easier to search through videos.
I just do not want youtube's main focus on how the advertisers are doing. If they focus on the advertisers more than the consumers, it's like treating us like objects. Youtube should have more open dialouge with its users, a better DMCA reform for people who had videos under fair use to voice themself, and other things I can't fit in this little space.
EricBoisen 2 years ago
EricBoisen,
How are we consumers of YouTube? What have you purchased from them? What financial transaction occurred between you and YouTube?
I agree that flagging campaigns suck, but considering the sheer volume of vids on here, it has to be automated. No matter what system is used, it will be metagamed at some point.
imrational 2 years ago
Well if we are not the consumers than who is? I think that we are the consumers because if we never came here in the first place it would not be here at all. By watching the videos and registering with youtube I belive that we are the consumers (of course this is my opinion).
If course it has to be automated, I agree, but they still need a reform in order to catch the real videos that fall through the cracks. Maybe a team to look over videos people appealed saying they were not copyrighted.
EricBoisen 2 years ago
EricBoisen,
You are welcome to your opinion, but it disregards the commonly held definition of consumer.
imrational 2 years ago
You do make very good points, but taking away the fat of this conversation what the main point is is that Youtube needs to listen to the users (us), and keep their main focus to us and not the advertisers, what people fear from this transformation.
What this whole "Hulutube Debacle" thing is is that people think that youtube will take their main focus from us to the advertisers and pleasing there every need/want and not listen to what the user say/need/want.
