i almost forgot Clyde McPhatter and Frankie Lymon all admire Nolan Strong and Nolan admire Clyde McPhatter vocal style that how Smokey Robinson admire Nolan Strong and clyde McPhatter plus Frankie Lymon Jackie Wilson and Sam Cooke
Smokey shouldve covered both Nolan Strongs songs The Wind and Mind Over Matter because he had an early influence on Nolan Strong and his vocal style and Jackie Wilson too both are from Detroit Michigan
Smokey Robinson emulated these guys What a pure voice and The Jackson 5 would have done this song serious justice Nolan Strong has a more pure tenor than Smokey
I was introduced to doo-wop music through my father, and this was one of his favorite songs. He said he got this just before he entered the USAF. Being a kid born in 1964, that falsetto voice of Nolan Strong reminded me of Michael Jackson.. Beautiful music..
One of many great songs by groups that all were all number one. Their styles and arrangements makes it hard to say who was the best. What an era of music and great songwriters. Thanks Bob for the post.
R U "THE" BOB SEGER?? I LOVE EVERYTHING YOU EVER DID..I SAW YOU AT THE SUGER SHACK IN COLS OHIO.BOB SEGER AND THE LAST HURD..I TOOK MY GRANDSON TOO SEE YOU IN CONCERT THE LAST TIME YOU WERE IN COLS. KEEP ROCKIN BABY.
I first heard the Jester's version of this tune. I liked their arrangement of it, especially the backbeat, but they(or most anyone)had anything on Nolan Strong's voice!!
Our group did this song by the Diablos back in the day. We always felt that Nolan, as well as other high leads, were inspired by the popularity of Clyde McPhatter during his earlier Drifter days. Clyde rarely required falsetto to reach piercing notes, and helped to show how great such high leads could be, and then how fine a background would be when such voices did the first tenor parts. Falsetto often replaced such voices, but would never quite sound the same.
Nolan Strong and the Diablos were an inspiration to many of the great groups to follow. This haunting song has always been one of my favorites(along with the Jesters vesion). I used to spend hours playing the groupson my 45 record player practicing my bass voice as a teenager. I used to sing with a group called The Chateaus" out of Union City NJ . Thanks for posting this great song.
why is it some of the best music on you tube have the least views. i know im good for at least 50 or more on nolan strong, and that number gets more and more by me.
I never considered part of the R&R Genre, It was R&B Group harmony. And a very mistifying song, I describe it as Myles Davis said about certain songs, It was really "Out!"
In the Ole days you had to be real Hip to appreciate this song.
The first Soul record to come out of Detroit , 5 years before Motown started up.

Yes, I see how he may have influenced Smokey.
But the Jesters' version of the song is better--greater degree of tension; more drama.

@meihachan It's a matter of opinion. IMO, Nolan wins going away.

Laura Nyro described this song as "earthy romantic music that inspired more leaps of faith and less cynicism".
